Debian Multimedia :: Add New Icons On Lower Panel
Apr 28, 2015
Both Gnome and Gnome-Classic desktops become extremely unmanagebale for me in jessie stable. So I installed xfce desktop in jessie stable. Is there a way to add icons like /usr/bin/skype ]usr/sbin/synaptic.(those nor shown in Add New Icons) in the lower panel which I have extended through the whole desktop? This could easily be done both in gnome and gnome-classic desktops till wheezy.

I'm using squeeze and the xserver-xorg-core, kdebase and kdm packages with their dependencies in addition to the base system installation. I get glitches when I try to drag the icons on the panel: I can't move them properly and occasionally the whole screen gets redrawn (by this I mean it goes black and gets back several seconds later.) and gives an error with signal 11 (segmentation fault). The problem is not specific to my user account, because I tried it with a newly created user, and I didn't do any configuration on mine either. I also experienced other glitches, about which I made some screenshots: [URL]

If I try to change the icon style, it changes the icons in my desktop and in Nautilus, but it doesn't change the icons in the panels nor the ones in the menus.
Some screencaps:

I was trying to make my surround sound work and screwed things up. Anyways, one of them is the one with the vertical slider and the other one is the one with the horizontal slider. I want to get rid of the one with the vertical slider. How do I do this? (The one with the vertical slider is in the part where the "tray-ed" programs go). When I use my keyboard volume up and volume down buttons, I notice that the two controls respond APPROXIMATELY the same where one is slightly ahead of the other. If more information is needed, just ask.

I have a minimal debian install, with not much more than enough to run scrotwm, I want to change the basic arrow cursor to a png I have. Is there a simpler lower level way of achieving this without having to install and modify an existing cursor theme. I installed x11-apps just to get xcursorgen... though idk if this has been an essential step or not. Anyway, I have run it on my arrow.png/arrow.cursor to create a "default" cursor file... though am lost as to where to go from there. I have no idea where the existing default cursor is located, though i suspect it's a font cursor not a icon cursor...

I installed deskbar and really like it as a multi search tool. But I would really like to have the actual search field present at all times in my lower panel. Right now, I just have the deskbar icon, which is like a magnifying glass with an orange little "electrical shock" (kind of reminds me of like a cardiogram line) coming out of it. I have seen screen shots before of other people's desktop with the actual search field constantly in the lower panel. And it was mentioned in those screen shots that it was in fact deskbar.

I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

I play around with OpenBox and FBPanel, and quite like it.
I started to install both OpenBox and FBPanel in Debian, and the menu don't have any icons on it.
Simply I'm not going to reconfigure everything in both distro, I copied fbpanel configuration folder to my Ubuntu home.
Then I install FBPanel in Ubuntu it have icons within the menus.
This is FBPanel from my Debian Jessie
This is FBPanel from my Ubuntu
I've googled around without any luck about this problem. It's minor and everything else works okay, but still this shouldn't be happen. Since I see the screenshots of FBPanel in Debian they all have icons on it. Tried changing the icon theme, nothing works. If it's because FBPanel can't find any icon, then the launcher shouldn't have any icons right? Also, I use the exact same configuration on both.
Is it because Debian uses different version of FBPanel? Haven't checked both version tho.

I use Debian Jessie which includes a gnome shell version 3.14.1. The problem is that icons of some applications such as Viber or Starcal are not shown in the tray while the icons of other applications (e.g. Skype of Dropbox) are shown without problem.
By the way, the problem does not relate to loading, because all applications are loaded and a space is considered for each in the tray, but the problem is that for some of applications the pictures of their icons are not shown.

I saw that on every computer in which I installed LXDE on Debian 8 (the problem was not existing on Debian 7.8.0)
So I decided to use mate-desktop-environment but a brand new problem (always ) made his apparition when I try to use tightvncserver on a Mate desktop (no task bar, and memory growing GB after GB up to the memory explosion after 1 or 2 minutes with 16GB RAM -I will post another subject for that once I will know more things about it - since it is, after all, an huge problem causing the computer to crash if "reboot" our "vncserver -kill :1" is not quickly done)
But here talking about LXDE taskbar: others LXDE users, do you have this problem with the icons ?

I want to give some of my directories special folder icons. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

All qt4 apps tray icons are missing. Debian decided to drop sni-qt support and wmsystemtray is actually piece of shit. Also I can't even use ubuntu version of sni-qt, because it also needs to have patched version of qt4, but debian refused to include that patches. What should I do to make skype icon visible in kde5 tray?

I don't find the little icons and tiny previews that iceweasel seems to make by grabbing an icon from a webpage at all helpful, and consider them a security risk.I have been using Debian Lenny for some time and have tried hard to foil the chrome engine (?) xul_runner (?) from sticking these icons in various places. But it still manages to stick them in, of all places, my bookmark file. How do I prevent that?

Unlike ubuntu on xubuntu I am not able to add additional icons to the top panel. I wanted to add icons to start Open Office Writer and terminal but for some reason I can't.I right clicked on an app (icon) to add it to the panel but that does not work.I clicked on an app (icon) and tried to move it to the panel. No success.I right clicked on the panel and selected "Add new items" but the list of apps is limited.[edit] What I want to do is be able to launch applications from the top panel by adding icons to the panel.

I'm using Debian Testing (Stretch, right now), and for a little while, a couple of months or so, QtCurve wasn't working properly (and lately, not at all) on GTK2.
After quite a lot of frustrated attempts, I think i fixed it in a way that's probably not recommended at all. I copied the file libqtcurve.so from Wheezy's version of gtk2-engines-qtcurve, and used it instead. It "just worked".
So, experiencing problems with QtCurve on GTK (most noticeably, being unable to set fonts and icon themes for GTK2 apps), or was it just an oddity of my install? My installs are often not all that standard, so I'm never sure. I'm asking because I have to figure out lots of things if I'm to make a bug report, and the bug may not even really exist . I think I'll even check before if the Testing package from another server works, maybe that's the problem.
I just found that this fix/version makes inkscape crash, would probably do the same to some other stuff -- newer versions (even with proper full package install) also have the same effect, except for that latest one, that doesn't seem to work in GTK2.
It's reported as a bug in Ubuntu. The "correct"/better fix seems to be commenting the font-related lines in /usr/share/themes/QtCurve/gtk-2.0/kdeglobals (Not to be confused with KDE's own file of the same name) on the newer package. That doesn't seem to make inkscape crash.
The same file also set the icon theme on GTK2 as Oxygen, commenting the icon line on the same file doesn't fix it, the correct theme apparently has to be spelled out, it seems it has to be for all users using any QtCurve theme, and GUI tools to change the icon theme won't work (but I haven't really tested the "native GTK" ones).

I have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.
Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective. It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.

I've recently installed 10.04 on my laptop and spent some time configuring it. A while ago I've noticed that there are now two battery icons in the panel in the top-right corner. One seems to be attached to the indicator applet and the other one sits by itself. Changing the settings in the Power Management menu affects both icons in the same way (I can either show or hide them both). Is there any way to remove the extra icon and just keep the one integrated into the indicator?
This is a very minor annoyance really, but it'd still be nice if there was a fix for it.
Update: Now the battery icon in the indicator applet has changed to the chat "evelope" icon, but it still acts as a battery icon (same menu). Something is definitely not right here...

I have two icons on the far right of my top panel that have no "Move menu item". I would like to move them so that they are more to the left and the search is first on right followed by the time/date and everything else after that. One icon is Dropbox and the other is my wireless signal icon. How do I move these icons? There is no lock to panel or move menu item.
