I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo i upgraded to 10.04 a few months ago, right after it was released. clean install. it worked perfectly out of the box, or so it seemed. I had had sound problems in 9.10 that i didn't experience after i upgraded... until i tried to use some headphones a few days ago. when i connected the headphones, the speakers wouldn't mute. i thought it was no big deal. i had the same issue in 9.10 and it was fixed after i upgraded alsa. i figured i'd try the same thing. I used the same alsa upgrade script i used last time [URL] and it fixed the jack sensing and the sound worked perfectly... for about 5 minutes. after a short while of playing audio, sound would stop playing. i'd stop getting sound from video files, audio files, and even from my browser. i'd have to reboot to get sound again... only to lose it again in about 10 minutes. Now it's regressed to the point where i have no sound even after i reboot.
weird thing is, when i test out an audio file with aplay, it works... even if i just get garbage sound from some mp3 files.
anyway, i've got an HP dv7 and this is my aplay -l output

where to customize the modules thing? I've always used Ubuntu and there was an asoundconf file where I could change these settings.Haven't been able to find the same sort of thing on Fedora. A lot of people say I should either edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file which is now deprecated and does not exist on my computer, or edit some alsa file under /etc/modprobe.d/ which i don't have either.I've installed all of the alsa packages through yum.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.

I am having an intel machine with linux' redhat 5.4 distro. It's superb when it comes to server making and other admin. kind of stuffs but it fails when it comes to multimedia for i am unable to configure the sound file (asound.rc), i tried various codes but it only gives sound output on 2 front speakers. i want to activate other two rear speakers and the center one as well. this is my card info Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. 1. I run Suse 11.2 with two sound cards , one HDA comes with motherboard and second is USB, which I use for skype and talking. In YAST everything is fine the motherboard card is marked as prime card and the usb card is marked as second. But often when I log in alsa decides that second card is main and I have to pull out the USB card, run command "rcalsasound restart" and put the USB back afterward. It is a way that to be fixed in the way that alsa remember my choices forever. 2. The other problem is that from time to time the sound suddenly dies and I have to bring it up with rcalsasound restart again.
But I have to admit that their significant improvement with managing sound with PulseAudio.
I've got sound - I hear all the system sounds, I can play sound files, CDs, etc. But I have not been able to record and play back anything with success.
Originally, when I would record (either with arecord or with audacity) I would get extremely low quality sound, with lots of noise and crackling, and my recorded voice was barely audible (even with volume turned up to max). I played with alsamixer for hours without being able to improve matters.
Things are worse now. I tried installing alsa-firmware, as indicated at SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE. I also tried updating alsa following instructions given at SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE. I'm not sure which of these changes did it, but the result is that I can no longer record ANYTHING at all. I get absolutely nothing, not even the low quality noise and crackling I was getting before. It's as if there is no audio input at all.
Uninstalling alsa-firmware and reverting back to the older alsa version (1.0.20) didn't change a thing.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2, kernel 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop, alsa 1.0.20. My sound card is a Creative X-Fi (by the way, yast cannot detect my card, another problem I have never solved).

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it. With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume. With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running pretty much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at. Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa? The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine backend.

I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7

Any ideas?
The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.
Every time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. Sound was working just fine before on my Asus Xonar DS, However, my nvidia geforce 430's hdmi audio card is not recognized in 1.0.23 but it is in 1.0.24. Though the card is detected, I have no sound on either cards now.

Getting sound to work in Linux has been nearly impossible since I upgraded from Ubuntu Jaunty to Karmic. I finally had it working for about 6 months in Fedora 12, then I upgraded to 14. </rant> When I install pulse, I can hear the login sound on KDE, and the KDE error sounds, and that's it. I can't even hear sounds from the test button in the Phonon settings.With ALSA alone,I get absolutely nothing. I've already been through this which was minimal help.

I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble getting ALSA working on my system. I had been using OSS for awhile but decided to move to ALSA after a kernel upgrade. ALSA worked fine except for the tedious chore of having to run alsaconf everytime I booted up. I was getting errors message for OSS during boot up telling me OSS modules weren't loading properly and linux-headers needed to be installed to get it to work properly again. I ended up installing the linux-headers later due to some nvidia driver fiddling. My system has now reverted back to OSS and I can't seem to get ALSA to work at all. I have libasound2, alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss installed and alsaconf says no ALSA modules are loaded. I've been searching around and haven't found how to get rid of OSS to install ALSA properly.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.

Having had many problems with pulseaudio on a fresh karmic install, I followed some recommended instructions for removing pulse and using alsa (URL...). unfortunately, both pulse and alsa have gone and i'm left with oss which seems to work fine. I'd like to have alsa back though.When I open amarok, it plays the frst song on the playlist then pops up a series of 'could not initialise sound engine' messages, and crashes.
