I'm building my slackware system from a minimal set of packages. I've got X and fluxbox up and running, and I'm trying to "slack-build" feh which depends on imlib2 to set background wallpapers. The problem is trying to "feh" any image gives the error message:

I finally ditched PulseAudio and set up my system with a realtime kernel. I'm redirecting ALSA over JACK. The good: - Awesome, I can get <5ms latency without any xruns! (although 23.2 msec as described below is just fine for me) The bad: - I'm a long-time linux audio user, but have got some minor issues which spoil the fun.
1. Without pulseaudio, the indicator applet refuses to show a volume control applet. The old gnome-volume-control-applet (the one with tooltip!) loads but doesn't show in the gnome-panel. Although I can set the volume with envy24control, it's not quite as practical as using the scrollwheel! Any way to fix this?
2. When I launching any application (such as a terminal) from the gnome-panel, a new JACK connection is created, but not cleaned up after closing the application. As a result, the QJackCtl connection list is flooded with alsa-jack.jackP.8528.xx connections (where 8528 is the process ID of gnome-panel). The jack_lsp command line program shows the same (added spaces after every : to get around the smiley filter):

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new install of 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite with a dual boot of win7. I installed 10.10 and on the first night I swore the headphone jack sent sound to my external speakers (may of been plugged in during install). Then the next day I couldn't get any sound out of the jack. Sound kept coming out of my internal speakers. In win7 the jack worked normally. In Ubuntu I have checked sound preferences and my alsa mixer. There is no listing for a headphone jack (so it is not muted).

I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

The sysytem I use is Debian Squeeze. what's wrong but jackd2 from debian official repositories does not work with alsa (I have alsa-base, alsa-tools, libaudio-dev, libaudiofile-dev and libasound2-dev installed). Now I downloaded fresh jackd2 source from sourceforge and when I try to "./waf -configure" it it says that there is no alsa package or it's too old in the system and configures itself without alsa support.

I have just started to work with BeagleBoard and built the Linux kernel (version 2.6.30.5) and download to the board and it start. I have also connected to the board over serial to Putty terminal.
Now I want to connect to the Beagle Board using USB instead of serial and I am looking for some info on how to do this.
My goal would be to connect to board over USB and then be able to:
* Download my own binary files/programs from PC over USB to BeagleBoard
* Communicate over USB instead of UART/Putty to get log and execute commands

I installed the libffado from Slackbuilds.org yesterday on my -current box, and followed the instructions in the README for configuration. After I did that jack wouldn't start at all, insisting that there were no recognized drivers, even when I had the alsa driver selected (alsa is working fine, by the way... I have sound). After doing some more research I uninstalled jack and built Jack2 (1.9.6) from source with the following configure options:

I've been googling around and so far have found nothing. I was getting more errors earlier but that was solved by installing xmlto.

when i plug in my headphones i was getting sound output both from the laptop speakers and the headphones, then i tried changing the sound.conf file and still no success and then i tried reinstalling the alsa - i downloaded the latest alsa-driver and alsa-lib and installed them, but when i rebooted there was no more sound from the headphones when i plug them in. I don't know what to do, i tried reinstalling alsa multiple times but still no success. Is there any way to bring back my previous configuration when i installed slackware ? Or some way to roll back using the installation dvd ?

then if I reboot, the sound address becomes hw:0.0It's really annoying, because every time I have to re-run xmms and mplayer setup to get any sound!Also, if any program is playing audio (like xmms), other programs cannot play audio at the same time.ie: if I'm listening music with xmms then I try opening some video with mplayer or firefox/flash, I get no audio on this video....What's the deal with kde phonon? I install the ATI drivers yesterday and today I've realised that it broke my sound. I have a HDA nVidia sound card built in (with a Realtek chip), but when I run alsaconf, it doesn't find it. It tries to use either the ATI HDMI audio port or a legacy generic driver. Any hints as to how I can fix this?

After updating my system today, sound stopped working. VLC said I should update alsa-lib. Slackbuilds had none to offer, so I got the sources from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page. It compiled and installed without problems, but the error from VLC states the same. Is my system the only one affected by the update, and how do I fix it?

Only the onboard devices are detected. Alsaconf does not see the card and the Kmix application does not see it either. Only lspci & cat /proc/asound/cards see it but seems not able to use it...I am using the stock slack64 13.1 kernel 2.6.33.4 and I've recompiled alsa from sources to version 1.0.23.
