I was running a dual boot Ubuntu 9.10/Windows XP. I reformatted just the windows partition and re-installed it, and now I don't get the option at boot time of what OS I'd like to use...it just boots straight into Windows.

How can I get my dual boot working again? I had a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7. It was all well tweaked but I was annoyed with the ugly boot menue with old kernells so I decided to install BURG loader and remove some of the old kernells. So I did and after that I have not been able to reach my Ubuntu boot.
After multiple attempt to restore the old kernells and reinstall grub (through a USB live stick) i couldnt log in to either system (following the steps in this support thread [URL] Finally i mamanged to get my windows 7 working but my boot menue only shows memtest and windows 7 (not Ubuntu). I am affraid to tamper around to much and having a non funtional lap-top in the end. My lap-top still "miss" 40 GB that was set aside for the Ubuntu boot.
Hey, yesterday I decided to update from 10.10 to 11.04.
I was using Windows Vista in dual-boot with Ubuntu but after updating Ubuntu to 11.04 I lost my dual-boot menu. It worked without problems before update. Now it starts automatically to Ubuntu log in screen.
I've tried so far:
1. Updating GRUB via terminal
2. Looked at my menu entries

I was using dual boot (windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10) and it was going well. Couple of days ago I updated to Ubuntu 11.04 and everything was OK. Yesterday I cought some virus in windows, installed Microsoft security essentials which asked to update Windows. After update, dual boot is gone. It boots to windows directly with no option to choose between OS.

I'm trying to dual boot Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 8.10. I have installed Ubuntu first than Fedora (with GRUB installed on it's partition) but Ubuntu's GRUB got messed up. I reinstalled Ubuntu and now Ubuntu works fine but I cannot boot my Fedora. I have set "/fedora" as a mount point for the fc10 install and I can see that from Ubuntu but I can not boot into it. I no longer have any idea where to search for some way of getting it to work without reinstalling ....
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

View 3 Replies View RelatedGenerally I am used to installations of dual boot on different partitions(the traditional method) any windows OS with any ubuntu OS.I tried that with backtrack 4 and Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition! I had previously installed ubuntu 10.04 and then had an extra partition that had data in it.Went ahead to boot with the backtrack 4 disk BUT it did not give me an option for installing them side-by side so i did it manually by editing the partition with the partitioner! I had 2 swamp spaces one i which was initially there for Ubuntu and the other i created! Then simply formated ine partition with EXT3 and mountpoint of / which made two of them!after installation, the grub shows that there is another OS but when it does not load!

Everything was working fine with dual boot sda/osuse 11.2 and sdb/kubuntu. Decided to install new 11.3. Lost dual boot, can now only boot to 11.3, sort expected that. I see the root and home partitions in Dolphin but can't mount or open them? Would like to access the files copy to Osuse. Rite clik get me "error permission denied" I can reinstall Kubunt and it will set up my boot loader correctly with grub2, but is their a better quicker way? Why does Osuse still use the legacy grub?

1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and a small Windows 7 partition (cuz I can't get Ubuntu to run my MSI TV@nywhere plus card but that's another issue).I can log into Windows fine. If I choose Ubuntu, however, the boot process will go thru a few screen flickers. Then one of two things happens:1) I get a scrambled up pixelated image (not sure what it is) for about 3 second, then it goes into the login screen and I can log in normally.2) I get the scrambled up pixelated image and it hangs. This happens about 4 times out of 5 when rebooting.
I do have an nVidia card and a beta driver (they published it the 21st, I believe, of this month) but this happened long before that. It's happened ever since I installed any of the drivers (I've tried a couple different versions, hoping to fix this) for my card.
My system is a frankenputer:
Phenom II quad core 3.0 cpu
nVidia GeForce BFG 6600
4G DDR3
500G drive
Note: I do have 3D rendering when I finally get into the desktop. Not a major issue but my Ubuntu boot screen change to the old classic Orange theme after i installed Kubuntu on a different drive and ofcourse a new Grub loader as the Kubuntu installation prompted. It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.

I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.I have tried to grub-mkconfig and grub-update, both of which reported successful results.However on reboot I still get a blank screen for windows.This was not an issue with 9.04 and 9.10.so I don't think it is the machine.

Then suddenly Ubuntu loads without showing any option to load windows 7.
I have always had Ubuntu installed along with Win 7 but rarely use it, i only use it if i am flashing firmware to my phone or something similar.
I uninstalled my older version of Ubuntu because it was becoming sluggish and have tried to install the 10.10 version a few times today, but every time i boot into Ubuntu, i get a blank purple screen and nothing else.
My mouse curser is the only thing that is working but there is nothing to click on and nothing shows if i right click.
I have a Macbook Pro, with ubuntu as the ONLY OS, there is no dual boot. I bought the mac long ago and recently got fed up with OS X, so i removed it for unbutu. i've been having random troubles with it but have for the most part been able to figure it out by reading forums however, my computer will not boot now.
From power off:

Screen becomes grey for about twenty seconds

sometimes flashes the underscore in the top right corner once

I was playing Warcraft 3 (running on WINE) when I left it, the CD is still in the disk drive. I cannot eject it, I can not get to a log in screen, I can't do anything. Nothing I have attempted has affect the computer what so ever, except the power button as far as I can tell.
My brother installed ubuntu earlier this year, ended up not liking it, and somehow managed to delete all the Ubuntu folders from Windows XP without deleting neither the partition nor GRUB (which is what I'm assuming is keeping up the dual boot screens).

How do I get rid of the dual boot screen? AND how do I get rid of the partitions? I already tried to run Mbr fixer, but it hasn't worked. When I boot from the Windows XP CD I have, the recovery console doesn't detect the hard drive and therefore can't repair windows. I have the latest version of Kubuntu on hand - will installing this alongside or inside Windows XP wipe out the Ubuntu partitions or will it just create more partitions in the disk?
I am completely new to Ubuntu and recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the live CD. I allowed the set-up to install Ubuntu next to Windows XP and to let me choose which OS boots at start-up. Upon restarting my computer after installation, however, there is no boot-screen and my computer goes straight to WinXP. I have done some reading and it seems like I need to install GRUB, but I'm really not sure if this is really the case or if I am missing something else entirely.

The installation (dual boot with W7) went well, I personalized the software and had the "brilliant" idea to execute the recommended updates. Restarting the computer I just saw for a couple of seconds the blip up left and then a black screen. Nothing else happened. Posts to the French Ubuntu forum yielded no solution, so I decided to reinstall 10.04 again. It worked well a couple of times, and then again I had the black screen and no boot. How can I delete the installed versions?

I have a Toshiba NB305 on which I've installed 10.04 and then 10.10. I set it up to dual boot windows, but windows has never booted. I get a quick blue screen, and then it goes back to the grub menu. Ubuntu boots just fine. I occasionally have reason to boot into Windows. So it would be nice to get it working. Here's the output from boot_info_script.

just installed ubuntu on my win 7 laptop using the wubi.. after the install it said restart,so i restatred and booted up ubuntu which went sound,it then says finishing installation.. ubuntu comes up does the partions then started copying files then once it had done this the screen went black with loads of writing on it..it seems to just stay like this.. i left it 30 mins the restarted laptop again..laptop working sound booted ubuntu again and the same thing happened..

The MBR was set to hd0, but should this be installed on the Linux or Windows partition to prevent this?
I'm using opensuse 11.2 and a week or so ago it suddenly stopped shutting down the computer, or rebooting. It shuts the screen down and that seems to be it, so I have ti switch it off. However a day or so later it began to reboot when asked, but still won't shut down. I'm dual booting it with Unbuntu 9.04 using grub2, but it's been that way for many months without problems.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.
Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.
I've had Windows XP Home installed on my netbook (Toshiba NB205) and I've just tried to install squeeze via net install. In particular, I installed grub. Everything seemed to go ok during the installation, but when I boot up, all that appears is a blank screen with nothing but at "j" and a cursor. One thing I can think of that might offer a clue, is that when asked to installed grub, the installer said it recognized two operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP Home, and Windows NT/XP. The latter is not really an operating system, but the backup partition.
I don't know how this might affect grub's functioning. What does this "j" mean? Looking at this: [URL]. Could this have some thing to do with boot flag? Should I switch it to my NTFS partition instead of my root partition? Doing that at least let's me boot into Windows. But that's not what I want. I've never dual booted before. So I booted back up with my USB, intending to reinstall Debian, and it loaded grub instead. So apparently grub is now on my USB. Then it booted me into Debian.
I currently have a successful dual boot of XP and Fedora 10. I need to re-format my windows partition and re-install XP. When I use the windows CD, it asks to boot from cd. I hit any key and the screen goes black and stays there. XP is the primary OS (C, fedora is the secondary (D. Any thoughts? I still need Windows, because I am just learning Fedora.
