Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on dual boot computer. Each OS is on separate hard drive with GNOME selection between Ubuntu and Windows 7 Ultimate. Firefox was working fine yesterday when I went to use today, nothing. Email through Thunderbird is down as well.
View 3 RepliesThe internet has been working happily on my Mythbuntu machine for many months but stopped working overnight.If I try to do "sudo start networking" I get a "Job failed to start" message.There's also a solid orange light on the ethernet socket.As it's been working for months, I don't think my interfaces config needs updating.Looking at what's been updated recently on the system:
1) I've configured the machine to wake from USB. It was working for a couple of days so I don't believe this is the issue.
2) I set up wake-on-lan with ethtool. Again, this was working (although it did seem to disable wake-on-usb and required a reboot to fix)
3) Update to 11.04 - I said no to this, as 10.10 was working very nicely indeed.
I've disabled wake on lan and rebooted. No joy.
ethtool detects the ethernet controller ok and it's listed in lshw.
I was having trouble with some software detecting ports so i removed ufw and now have no internet
Ive tried and none of these work:
On one of my F10 boxes yesterday, I installed several NM packages with yum update after being advised of their availability. Today, (the first reboot since installation) I no longer have network access on that box.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora 10 to basically work as a NAS for another machine - but also serve a couple of web pages. After having alot of issues with network manager (with it changing the subnet so nothing would work), I'm now almost there:
I have two network cards connected in the server:
1) eth0 connects to a switch that ultimately connects it to the net (on a 10.0.0.* network)
2) eth1 connects directly into another server for backups (192.168.0.* network).
Now when I setup eth0, I get network access can ping/ update/ surf the net - absolutely no problems, but when I connect eth1 in - the net dies and nothing works, I can ping devices on both the 10.0.* and 192.168.* networks, just nothing past the gateway. I presume this is either a route or DNS issue, but am unsure about where its falling foul - both the resolv.conf file looks fine as do the ifcfg-ethx scripts.
I am new to linux. Whenever I boot my system. I always have to click on system eth0 to enable internet connection in network settings. How can I make it permanent so that as system boots up, network connectivity is itself enabled.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)
- Why did I lose internet connectivity?
In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.
I would like to share my internet connectivity on eth0 with another computer on eth1.

I was running a dual boot Ubuntu 9.10/Windows XP. I reformatted just the windows partition and re-installed it, and now I don't get the option at boot time of what OS I'd like to use...it just boots straight into Windows.

It was all well tweaked but I was annoyed with the ugly boot menue with old kernells so I decided to install BURG loader and remove some of the old kernells. So I did and after that I have not been able to reach my Ubuntu boot.
After multiple attempt to restore the old kernells and reinstall grub (through a USB live stick) i couldnt log in to either system (following the steps in this support thread [URL] Finally i mamanged to get my windows 7 working but my boot menue only shows memtest and windows 7 (not Ubuntu). I am affraid to tamper around to much and having a non funtional lap-top in the end. My lap-top still "miss" 40 GB that was set aside for the Ubuntu boot.
Hey, yesterday I decided to update from 10.10 to 11.04.
I was using Windows Vista in dual-boot with Ubuntu but after updating Ubuntu to 11.04 I lost my dual-boot menu. It worked without problems before update. Now it starts automatically to Ubuntu log in screen.
I've tried so far:
1. Updating GRUB via terminal
2. Looked at my menu entries

I was using dual boot (windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10) and it was going well. Couple of days ago I updated to Ubuntu 11.04 and everything was OK. Yesterday I cought some virus in windows, installed Microsoft security essentials which asked to update Windows. After update, dual boot is gone. It boots to windows directly with no option to choose between OS.

I'm trying to dual boot Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 8.10. I have installed Ubuntu first than Fedora (with GRUB installed on it's partition) but Ubuntu's GRUB got messed up. I reinstalled Ubuntu and now Ubuntu works fine but I cannot boot my Fedora. I have set "/fedora" as a mount point for the fc10 install and I can see that from Ubuntu but I can not boot into it. I no longer have any idea where to search for some way of getting it to work without reinstalling ....
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

I had previously installed ubuntu 10.04 and then had an extra partition that had data in it.Went ahead to boot with the backtrack 4 disk BUT it did not give me an option for installing them side-by side so i did it manually by editing the partition with the partitioner! I had 2 swamp spaces one i which was initially there for Ubuntu and the other i created! Then simply formated ine partition with EXT3 and mountpoint of / which made two of them!after installation, the grub shows that there is another OS but when it does not load!
View 2 Replies View Relatedi had a dual boot with xp and lucid lynx, then upgraded the xp to win7. windows commonly overwrites grub with it's bootloader. and so it did. now i can't access my lucid OS. i need to get grub back (i need to get lucid back).

Everything was working fine with dual boot sda/osuse 11.2 and sdb/kubuntu. Decided to install new 11.3. Lost dual boot, can now only boot to 11.3, sort expected that. I see the root and home partitions in Dolphin but can't mount or open them? Would like to access the files copy to Osuse. Rite clik get me "error permission denied" I can reinstall Kubunt and it will set up my boot loader correctly with grub2, but is their a better quicker way? Why does Osuse still use the legacy grub?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to Dual-boot Windows & and OpenSUSE 11.4, and have run into walls all over the place. Here is what I did:
1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.
I am using Suse 10 sp2. By running ifconfig I am changing the mac address. Everything is happening successfully, but this is adapter losing the network connection. Even when I give a static IP. I am not able to ping any other IP.

Now I have upgraded to Karmic, and when I try to attach the virtual machine to the USB scanner I see its line (and all other lines) greyed out, see the screenshot below:
Thus I have lost USB connectivity after upgrade to Karmic. Also in the yellow status box "Unavailable" appears. how to use my scanner and other USB devices again?

View 9 Replies View Relatedred hat 5 update 4 64bit. on an interactive boot i can ping -t my vm linux server from my physical MS XP workstation and a vm W2000 64 bit server until xend is started, after that i get destination unreachable. if i choose not to start xend on the interactive boot i retain connectivity. i have read some blogs that imply this might be a bug - is this so? do I need xend on my vm red hat box that is a database server?

Anyway, I did a dual-boot with XP, which had it's own issues, but which I figured out with some info. Now my problem is I can't access the internet from within Ubuntu. It's finding the hardware, I think.

I seem to have a problem connecting to the internet with Ubuntu after dual-booting my new laptop with 10.04. I have a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card in my new laptop, and I'm not sure what to do to fix this. The other computers I have running Ubuntu are much older and had everything run correctly right after the install.

but if I connect to net using win 7 internet is not working. However if I connect internet in ubuntu and restart win 7 without switching off router I can access net in win7 even if I switch off router and start again its working fine. But when I shut down system and router and switch on in win7 its not connection.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual boot with Win/XP, using the text based installer. Installation seems to have completed OK and Ubuntu boots as expected - but Firefox cannot find any web-page.
How do I start look for the problem cause?
I should say that I previously had installed Kubuntu 10.04 (64 -bit). It was installed for a few months up to May 2010, but then it suddenly lost all internet connectivity after I hibernated the system. Win/XP continued to work with no error. Despite some months of help and advice from the Kubuntu forum, I was unsable to solve the problem. Indeed one piece of advice resulted in the overwriting of my Win/XP installation. I have now re-installed Win/Xp and decided to install 32-Bit Ubuntu - but I am back into the 'no internet connection' problem again. Win/XP works fine.
I had my desktop running ubuntu 10.10 at my sisters house hooked up to a router sharing internet with her boyfriend never had a problem with it there. I moved into my own apartment this week plugged the cable modem directly into the broadcom ethernet card and couldn't get an ip or anything it wouldn't connect period so I ended up hooking it up usb which works but only at speeds of 5-7mbit when I have 15mbit connection. So I put another ethernet card in hoping it was just problem with the card and tried it that worked.
I got a connection but it was incredibly slow like getting maybe 5k a second so I open network tools in administration menu and start pinging google. While I'm waiting on a bandwidth test to complete and it takes off getting like 20mbit keeps that connection for a while then out of nowhere just drops to almost nothing. Again for a few minutes then falls off completely so I restart and it does the exact same thing starts off slow then something clicks and it works great for 5 min then nothing?
I currently have an old powermac 7220/200 with all ehe origanl stuff except for the hard drive which is now a slightly larger one. I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? Unfortunantly I cannot connect this computer to any internet even if I had a card that was compatible with mac os.
