Ubuntu :: LibreOffice Broke OpenOffice Install?
Feb 25, 2011
I wanted to try LibreOffice out. I found a PPA for it, so I added the source, tried it out, didn't like it, and noticed that openoffice now won't work. Which isn't too big of a deal, but now I can't even get the software center to install it. It gives me some error that you can read in the screenshot. What can I do?

I noticed there were updates for everything related to OpenOffice today which reminded me, now that LibreOffice is the default, why keep OpenOffice?I removed OpenOffice and all its components.LibreOffice still runs unaffected, but now autoremove wants to uninstall LibreOffice as well.Is OpenOffice a dependency of LibreOffice? Should I reinstall OpenOffice?

I installed Libreoffice on my Ubuntu 10.10 (through wubi), and uninstalled Openoffice afterwards. Everything's ok. But then I continue to receive updates for openoffice modules (which are a lot btw). From the Software Center, currently installed are libreoffice modules together with (I think) their openoffice counterparts. Now the question is, is it safe to remove the openoffice modules? Or does Libreoffice need them, too? How do I remove them completely from the updates?

Has anyone tested the compatibility of LibreOffice with OpenOffice by reworking (using LibreOffice) a complicated document originally written in OpenOffice? Are there any problems switching from one to the other while working on a given project?

I am using LibreOffice 3.3.2 Final on a 10.10 Ubuntu Laptop.Everything I print from LibreOffice and Openoffice is printed ~2 cm too high. Printing from other programs as Document Viewer and GIMP is just fine. It's not a settings problem, Ive checked everything hundred times. I am printing on HP Deskjet connected to a wireless router with CUPS 1.4.4 Driver.

I have box that I run Sid on. I haven't used if for a month or so and have found that OpenOffice is gone and appears to have been replace by LibreOffice. I have come across one other thread which noted something similar. Is LibreOffice any better than OpenOffice? I plan to purge LibreOffice and install OpenOffice back on unless there is a good reason to keep LibreOffice.

Is it possible to install Debian 8.2 lxde WITHOUT Libreoffice? I have successfully installed it on an eeepc with a 4 gb ssd
But then removed Libreoffice to have room for files.
It works great! It would be nice to just install Debian lxde without Libreoffice, which I do not use, I prefer gnumeric and vim.

For a month or two I have been trying to install a en_NZ dictionary for Libreoffice. It is available from the openoffice extensions page - which I am directed to by selecting Libreoffice > Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online.
However for the past month or two this page has had problems. Every time I click on any of the extensions I am taken to an error page that states "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
Does nobody maintain the openoffice extension pages any more?

I decided I didn't like unity all too much and I liked gnome 3 when I previously tried it, so I followed these instructions [URL] On how to install gnome 3, the next time I turned my computer on, I was greeted with a bright blue screen as the background of the login screen, and the only options are 'user defined session' and 'recovery console'. An error message that I can't recall came up with just a prompt to log out, now when I turn my computer on, the screen doesn't even come on (laptop with broken screen connected to external monitor, normally works perfectly) the screen won't come on at all an I can't get onto my 10.10 livecd

For my desktop use, I wanted to keep my office suite and web browser updated while continuing to run Debian stable as my base. Here is how to install the latest Firefox and Libreoffice packages on Squeeze. Download Firefox 4 here. Then as root:
Code:
mv firefox*.tar.bz2 /opt
cd /opt
tar -xvjf firefox*.tar.bz2
ln -s /opt/firefox /usr/local/firefox4
ln -s /usr/local/firefox4/firefox /usr/local/bin/firefox4
rm firefox*.tar.bz2
[Code].....
It will install Libreoffice in /opt and the packages will show up in Synaptic Package Manager under "Local". The installation automatically creates menu entries in Gnome for Libreoffice applications. I've had no problems thus far using the latest Libreoffice 3.2.2 and Firefox 4. Hope this is helpful for anyone else wanting to install.

I changed partitions (partition X is now partition X+1) and can no longer boot. I get thrown into grub rescue. But even if I get past that, it still doesn't boot. (I can't see why because it's using an unsupported graphics mode by default, but that's another gripe). I would prefer an installation which is not fragile to changes in partition numbers or drive numbers. It's not 1975 any more, can't we use meaningful names instead of 0, 1, 2?
