Ubuntu :: 11.04 Install Broke After Installing Gnome 3
May 3, 2011
I decided I didn't like unity all too much and I liked gnome 3 when I previously tried it, so I followed these instructions [URL] On how to install gnome 3, the next time I turned my computer on, I was greeted with a bright blue screen as the background of the login screen, and the only options are 'user defined session' and 'recovery console'. An error message that I can't recall came up with just a prompt to log out, now when I turn my computer on, the screen doesn't even come on (laptop with broken screen connected to external monitor, normally works perfectly) the screen won't come on at all an I can't get onto my 10.10 livecd

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.
I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

I installed gnome-do to see what it was like (useless - doesn't work properly with Unity as far as I can tell). After trying it out for a while I noticed that my browser and email keyboard shortcuts didn't work anymore. I have a Microsoft Ergo 4000 keyboard with dedicated browser and email buttons that I always used to start Firefox and Thunderbird. Now the browser button starts the browser, but instead of starting my home page it attempts to load a non-url number. All settings, like keyboard shortcuts, software preferences and in the browser are still set correctly, but it doesn't work anymore. The email button doesn't do anything anymore.Once again, all settings like keyboard shortcuts and software preferences are still correct, but the button no longer works.

Upon adding a 7th desktop panel (don't ask... or well, do if you want to and I'll explain), Gnome froze up on me and I had to reset the computer. Now I can't login to either a regular or a failsafe desktop without it freezing on me before even reaching the desktop. So the obvious question is, how do I delete superfluous panels from the terminal? I reckon it can't be that hard if you know how - which I don't.I'd appreciate any help on this, since in the meantime I will have to choose Windows 7 in the Grub menu, and who wants to do that if you can avoid it??By the way, how many panels can one reasonably have in Gnome? Already when I had 5, the autohide feature started acting up on the last panel added

Just updated my system to 11.04 and was not a fan of Unity. So I decided to switch to gnome 3. I downloaded all the packages and made the switch, only to realize I had made a HUGE mistake. While gnome 3 looks beautiful, it doesn't work at all for me. I have no internet (wired or wireless) now, and a host of other complaints. But when I try to restart Unity, the system fails. I also cannot start up Ubuntu in normal or Classic modes anymore.

I did exactly this tutorial says [URL] But now my Ubuntu 11.04 is stuck at blue-white login screen. Only User Defined Session and Recovery Console options are available but they are not working as well. But when I did the Gnome 3 upgrading, it asked for me to remove unused packages and I said yes. About 20 packages removed. Do I need to reinstall my Ubuntu? Or can I get my old Gnome 2? (Not Unity, I didn't like it.)

Here's the error I get:
"The configuration has not installed correctly for Gnome power management".
Updated my 11.04 install via the update manager last night. When I turned my computer on today it wouldn't boot into the normal gui desktop. Where my normal login screen usually appears a different login screen appears with my username. I login. Screen flickers black for a few seconds and a page with a ton of text shows up for a fraction of a second ( too short of a time to read a single word). more flickering. Then I am returned to the slightly different login screen once again with the error. I tried booting into failsafeX gui mode. Same issue.

After updating and installing Mysql's TOP, yum broke. When trying to clean, update, or install, the following error occurs:
dingle@its:/home/dingle# yum update
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named cElementTree
Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly.
It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is:
2.4.3 (#1, Sep 3 2009, 15:37:12)
[GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-46)]
If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: [URL]
I tried to resolve by reinstalling the dependency, didn't work either:
dingle@its:/home/dingle# rpm - [URL]
Retrieving [URL]
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package python-elementtree-1.2.6-7.el4.rf.i386 (which is newer than python-elementtree-1.2.6-5.i386) is already installed
How can I rebuild YUM appropriately so it will operate correctly?

I install the ATI drivers yesterday and today I've realised that it broke my sound. I have a HDA nVidia sound card built in (with a Realtek chip), but when I run alsaconf, it doesn't find it. It tries to use either the ATI HDMI audio port or a legacy generic driver. Any hints as to how I can fix this?

I installed Opensuse 11.2 DVD on a machine with Windows XP. During the installation I installed the KDE desktop. I had not tried out the KDE desktop. I had a Live CD with the Gnome desktop that i had tried out and liked. I think I like the Gnome desktop better. Now I would like to run both desktops. After going to the install new software and changing the view to patterns and select the "Gnome Desktop Environment" I get this error.
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2010-03-18 09:47:52 ####
pattern:gnome-11.2-20.22.1.i586 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: patterns-openSUSE-gnome-11.2-20.22.1.i586[11.2 - Main Repository (OSS)]
[code]...
I was able to install the Gnome Base system with no problems or conflicts.

By trying to install opensuse 11.4 / 1 the installation hungsup at a late level. After rebooting the system, the configuration goes on. When finishing the installation on that way, there are no menus so you can to simply nothing. The problem of system hanging exists also with version 11.3 final release but after rebooting the configuration goes on and when finished, you have the menus.

I wanted to try LibreOffice out. I found a PPA for it, so I added the source, tried it out, didn't like it, and noticed that openoffice now won't work. Which isn't too big of a deal, but now I can't even get the software center to install it. It gives me some error that you can read in the screenshot. What can I do?

I changed partitions (partition X is now partition X+1) and can no longer boot. I get thrown into grub rescue. But even if I get past that, it still doesn't boot. (I can't see why because it's using an unsupported graphics mode by default, but that's another gripe). I would prefer an installation which is not fragile to changes in partition numbers or drive numbers. It's not 1975 any more, can't we use meaningful names instead of 0, 1, 2?

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

I downloaded Adobe Air, both the rpm and the .bin versions. First I tried the rpm, it went through the motions of installing but just disappeared. then I tied the .bin, got tot the installer, accepted the license, entered my root password, but it stopped installing with "an error occurred. Adobe AIR could not be installed. Install either Gnome Keyring or KDE KWallet before installing Adobe AIR". I opened Kwallet and tried again, but to no avail. I am running OS11.4 64 bit. What can I do to get this thing working?

Also, I want to uninstall GNOME and install LXDE, is there anyway to do this without uninstalling any of the applications that are installed by default with gnome, such as openoffice.org or firefox?

Well, 45 minutes later, its still installing, and its only on step 8 of 33... is that right? its kinda worrying me that its taking so long, but I am afraid to stop it and screw something up.

I've just rented a dedicated server from [URL]
Its a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to use gnome desktop environment and connect to it with NX Client from my windows 7.
I have done the basics..
update
upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.
I got this mail back from them:
It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.
Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?
I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..
