I am just started using Ubuntu yesterday and I have been trying to install a program (Vim). I was following a tutorial and got to the following step:
- sudo dpkg -i vim73_20101114-1_amd64.deb
When run this command... I get the following message: Processing triggers for man-db ... Nothing happens after this and the regular terminal command line appears once again.

I would like to ask whether there is a way to postpone or delay message processing on postfix mail server. E.g. to postpone message transfer/relay for 5 minutes to be able to dequeue mis-targeted emails.I couldn't find anything because these keywords mislead to performance problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI start a program from terminal, say gedit. The terminal will be recognized as processing, and I cannot use the same terminal for other tasks until I close the gedit.
So without opening another terminal, how can I use the terminal while processing the program?
I have installed Ubuntu onto a old Dell Dimension 2400, with a Intel Celeron and i845GV chip. I am trying to install Processing and it says:
"If you set up a launcher (e.g. in Ubuntu), be sure to set the working directory to the folder that contains the shell script. It's not smart enough to find its own path."
How do you set up a launcher and set the working directory? Also, I have no idea about the chips in PC's but processing.org says it should run on. Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (on i686 and x86_64). Can i845GV support processing?

New to Fedora (from Windows), I am up and running ok with packages from the repository but only half ok with Processing, the Java graphics programming front end from processing.org.Their download gave me a .tgz file which Package Manager extracted for me into a location of my choice and where there is now a "processing" shell script.This works ok and I have managed to create a launcher on the desktop. That starts ok but always with processing's default action of giving you a new and automatically named work file.In Windows an existing Processing file (.pde file) could be "opened-with" Processing. Trying to do similar in Fedora I find that I am expected to nominate an Application to open with but Processing has not installed as an application.I guess the question is how do I promote Processing to be an Application?Or is there a different approach?

I`m running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 kernel 2.6.32-24 EDIT As I`ve just found out it`s not shift+alt that trigger scroll lock, but the fact of changing the keyboard layout. I`ve tried several other hotkey combinations as well as changing layout with the taskbar applet. All the same.

The user names on the AD side are all written in uppcase letters, which is the company policy.The uppername usernames causes problems when setting up /etc/sudoers, since uppercase words are interpreted as aliases. For example, if I add user KENNETH to a User_Alias (i.e. something like "User_Alias ADMINS = KENNETH"), I will get a warning from visudo which expects KENNETH to be an alias and thus not a username. Despite the warning, sudo does seem to work correctly. But is there a way to tell visudo or sudo that usernames are uppercase, and should not trigger a warning? Or are there other ways to go about this sort of thing?

I'm trying to perform a clean installation of 8.0.0-i386 from a CD. Seven consecutive attempts all result in the same issue: Almost immediately after commiting the disk partitioning settings (i.e., to begin formatting), the computer does a hard restart. I have tried doing the partitioning as early as possible in the installation process, just in case the system is running out of memory; I have also tried using the lowmem option. I suspect the problem may be related to my very old hardware...

Could it be that I need an older release or some custom-compiled kernel? The only thing I could come up with on the web was that a lot of people have a similar failure with modern distros on non-PAE CPUs, but the P-II should not be susceptible to this problem.

As i've read on a number of sites that there is a dependency problem, I went through loads of websites looking for a fix. I found nothing that would work.

I was noticed the below error message when I was installing the SKYPE linux version downloaded from the official web site of SKYPE. Actually I have already installed the QT4 with the highest version correctly even I can used the QT UI for programming now. But still I faced the problem of lack of libraries afterwards.

While installing fedora 14 from DVD, during the installing process started half way, the error message appear on the screen " The file ed-1.4-2.fc14.i686.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your installation source. " I have download the fedora 14 iso twice the same problem i got while installing. Anyway, I set up ICS, it didn't work, so I undid what I had done from the tutorial, I also cleared IPTable rules, but now I still get error messages as you can see on the attachments.
I installed Mono on Debian 8 using apt-get. Specifically, I followed these instructions: [URL]..
Then suddenly, my entire machine locked up . . . I gave it a few minutes and then cold booted. It came up to a login prompt but no gnome. sigh. So, I use apt-get to uninstall all of the mono stuff and I also did apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove . . . and rebooted . . . to a login prompt.
So, I installed gnome using apt-get install gnome-core and then after a reboot I got gnome again.
However, every time I log in, I see an "Oops" message flash briefly and then the GUI loads. Everything seems to be ok . . . but I don't like seeing that message; it says something like "something went wrong, please log out . . ."
I kind of dug around /var/logs a little and there are some error messages in kern.log files . . . how I can get my machine back to the state it was in, i.e., not flashing an Oops message when I authenticate?
I downloaded opensuse from opensuse.org(the DVD), and when I tried to install it gave me an error message. When I saw the file on the mirror, it was 4.7 G, but when I burned it, I did notice it was only 4.2 Gs.
I tried another download and again it was only 4.2 Gs, how or where can I obtain a working installable DVD of OpenSuse?
