Debian Installation :: Disk Partitioning Consistently Triggers Computer Restart

Jan 3, 2016

I'm trying to perform a clean installation of 8.0.0-i386 from a CD. Seven consecutive attempts all result in the same issue: Almost immediately after commiting the disk partitioning settings (i.e., to begin formatting), the computer does a hard restart. I have tried doing the partitioning as early as possible in the installation process, just in case the system is running out of memory; I have also tried using the lowmem option. I suspect the problem may be related to my very old hardware...

Micronics serverboard 440BX chipset*
Dual Pentium II 450MHz CPUs*
1GB ECC RAM*
Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter
IBM Ultrastar 36GB UW-SCSI HDD
ATAPI CD-ROM
Matrox G100 AGP video card*
*starred items are all original parts from an Intergraph server with validation/verification stickers attesting to their intercompatibility

No POST errors, the HDD passed verification using the Adaptec ROM utility, all unnecessary hardware removed

Could it be that I need an older release or some custom-compiled kernel? The only thing I could come up with on the web was that a lot of people have a similar failure with modern distros on non-PAE CPUs, but the P-II should not be susceptible to this problem.

Debian Multimedia :: Freedekstop MIME Types Versus Update Alternatives

Aug 15, 2010

I would like to know if there exists an article explaining how update-alternatives integrates with Freedesktop.org MIME. How do these systems coexist? How do they cooperate? Lately KDE and GNOME apps seemed to agree on default applications more and more; it seems there still exists an ordering problem [URL] , section Default application ordering), but things are generally working.

However, now I notice that some applications (which I've known for a long time to not be very Linux desktop friendly, I'm looking at Mozilla first, but this time I can't blame them without reason) use some totally different system, Alternatives. The example that comes to mind now is Icedove. Is there going to be a consensus on the default system or we'le have different applications using different systems?

Fedora Installation :: How To Use Processing.org's Processing-1.0.9 As Application?

Mar 1, 2010

New to Fedora (from Windows), I am up and running ok with packages from the repository but only half ok with Processing, the Java graphics programming front end from processing.org.Their download gave me a .tgz file which Package Manager extracted for me into a location of my choice and where there is now a "processing" shell script. This works ok and I have managed to create a launcher on the desktop. That starts ok but always with processing's default action of giving you a new and automatically named work file.In Windows an existing Processing file (.pde file) could be "opened-with" Processing. Trying to do similar in Fedora I find that I am expected to nominate an Application to open with but Processing has not installed as an application.I guess the question is how do I promote Processing to be an Application?Or is there a different approach?

Debian :: Errors Encountered While Processing AMD64 Packages

Mar 21, 2011

I have a VPS running Debian Squeeze. Today I ssh'd in to do an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade. Some of the packages seem to install fine, however linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 gives an error. I've tried rebooting (hoping that it would indeed come back up after a reboot and it did) but nothing has helped. Here's the output from apt:

Code:
root@enterprise:~# apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Errors were encountered while processing: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64

I also did an apt-get clean to drop the cache but that didn't help either.

Debian Installation :: Debian 5.0.4 New Install Will Not Read Boot Disk Info

Mar 10, 2010

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.

Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

Server :: Uppercase Usernames In / Etc / Sudoers Triggers Warnings

Jan 6, 2010

We're syncing users from Active Directory over to our linux LDAP server (Red Hat Directory Server). The user names on the AD side are all written in uppcase letters, which is the company policy. The uppername usernames causes problems when setting up /etc/sudoers, since uppercase words are interpreted as aliases. For example, if I add user KENNETH to a User_Alias (i.e. something like "User_Alias ADMINS = KENNETH"), I will get a warning from visudo which expects KENNETH to be an alias and thus not a username. Despite the warning, sudo does seem to work correctly. But is there a way to tell visudo or sudo that usernames are uppercase, and should not trigger a warning? Or are there other ways to go about this sort of thing?
