Debian :: Message After Losing Gnome After Installing Mono
Aug 10, 2015
I installed Mono on Debian 8 using apt-get. Specifically, I followed these instructions: [URL]..
Then suddenly, my entire machine locked up . . . I gave it a few minutes and then cold booted. It came up to a login prompt but no gnome. sigh. So, I use apt-get to uninstall all of the mono stuff and I also did apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove . . . and rebooted . . . to a login prompt.
So, I installed gnome using apt-get install gnome-core and then after a reboot I got gnome again.
However, every time I log in, I see an "Oops" message flash briefly and then the GUI loads. Everything seems to be ok . . . but I don't like seeing that message; it says something like "something went wrong, please log out . . ."
I kind of dug around /var/logs a little and there are some error messages in kern.log files . . . how I can get my machine back to the state it was in, i.e., not flashing an Oops message when I authenticate?
I am trying to run a .NET program with mono. I got the following:
Code:
Parser Error Message: Assembly ActiveReports.HtmlExport, Version=3.3.0.1999, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=cc4967777c49a3ff not found This means it requires ActiveReports, but could not find any Linux version of that software. So, is there any Linux alternative for it?
I just installed wine in an attempt to open .exe files. When running the code line /wine/file.exe the following message appeared: wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables. I tried out two things, both of which didn't work and the message still appears every time I try to use wine
1st: yum install mono-core.i686 It is the Mono CIL runtime, suitable for running .NET code. 2nd: downloading mono windows version from the original website but still couldn't install it because it is an .exe file
After installing a fresh Jessie, upgrading it to Stretch and then installing gnome. I see this white page with this weird error when I enter my password to log into my account in gnome:
Code: Select allOh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again.
Sometimes the error vanishes after a second and the desktop comes up with no problem and sometimes I get logged out automatically.
journalctl | grep gnome: [URL] .....

I would like to know if anyone has run more than one version of mono concurrently. I want to host a Battlefield 2 server with bf2ccd that requires mono 1.1.12. CentOS 5.3 repos provide mono 1.2.4 which is neither new enough nor old enough to support bf2ccd. I have considered compiling a newer version or an older version to accommodate this but I think that the only fully supported version is the 1.1.12 and I want to have the newer mono for other projects. I have used Slackware exclusively up to now and am not familiar with CentOS yet so I would like to avoid compiling if I can. The server is an unmanaged dedicated server so I'm not certain of all of the details. AFAIK it is a standard CentOS 5.3 install.
So, I have compiled a C# program on Linux using MonoDevelop. When I try to execute the resulting binary, my system tries and fails to run it as a windows executable, with wine. Wine gives me the following message:
$ ~/bin/MyMonoApp wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables ~/bin/MyMonoApp: command not found
I can only convince it to run by explicitly calling mono:
$ mono ~/bin/MyMonoApp
So, how can I make this the default, so I don't have to explicitly call mono every time?
I recently upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 and have some questions:
1. Will a clean install of 10.04 perform better than my upgrade? 2. Will it get rid of the message I get at boot time about IRQ #18 being disabled. 3. The boot splash image does not appear after the upgrade. Will it appear after a clean install? (It does when booting from 10.04 live CD). 4. And finally: I can see that there are some 20 or so folders including home when I do ls /
Code: mike@mike-laptop:~$ ls / bin dev initrd.img lost+found opt sbin sys var boot etc initrd.img.old media proc selinux tmp vmlinuz cdrom home lib mnt root srv usr vmlinuz.old
How may I preserve stuff I have on my upgraded system such as:- VirtualBox running a Windows XP guest, its application and data. - Wireless LAN implemented using ndisuio? wrapper Canon PIXMA IP2600 driver
I've Debian 7.8 and i tried to install gnome URL... I've used tasksel but after rebooting i don't see any change...also logging in with "GNOME" or "GNOME Classic" instead of "Deault system" nothing happen... i tried to run Code: Select allgnome-shell --replace and the gnome shell appeared but flicking, and to make it stop i had to reboot.I think i should try to install the radeonATI driver following this tutorial URL...
Just wanted to know whether I can install KDE along side GNOME in Debian Lenny? The reason I ask is Gnome was installed by default and I didn't get an option to install KDE during the text based setup. So I put in the dvd and to see if there was an option to install kde, and it does Install with KDE Environment (to that affect). Would it currently erase the current Debian installation with Gnome or will KDE install as a second desktop option to use?
When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?
I installed Debian 6.0.1.a on Friday, but the problem is that installing xfce installed a few packages that have nothing to do with it, like Brasero and metacity. I'm using the xfwm but why were these extra packages installed? All I installed at the time were wicd, gdebi, xorg and xfce4. Everything is working fine...but why the extra bits?
I just started to use debian at what i would call full speed as soon as i received my copy of the debian 6.0.0 DVDs. i installed it on two offline desktops, one for a friend. i have been able to install certain softwares that don't come along with the distribution such as firefox 4, openoffice 3.3, the latest jdk_update_24, and others, and i've been able to configure them to work well i think... but now, i learnt of the new gnome 3 that has been released recently. i've ofcourse downloaded all the source files at [URL] but now am facing a problem of how i can install these on to the debian computers (they don't have any internet connection).
So I can't install Firefox, because it conflicts with Iceweasel, but it appears that uninstalling Iceweasel uninstalls GNOME (gnome & gnome-core).Is there any way around this? Perhaps telling apt that Firefox is an alternate to Iceweasel?
I've just installed debian testing on my computer (netinst AKA basic shell version). Now, how do I do a minimal gnome install? Minimal means, I don't need libreoffice or any extra bloat. However, I do want nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon and networkmanager (and of course, firefox!).
Also, is audio included or not in gnome-shell?
If I just install the gnome-shell package (with --no-install-recommends package), will it pull in gdm, Xorg, etc. or do I have to install them separately? Also, need to confirm whether my sources.list is properly set or not:
Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.security.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main
I'm using KeePass 2.10 (with mono) and I am able to copy a password from KeePass (Ctrl+C) and paste into ALL applications except for the GNOME Terminal. When I copy something, I am not able to paste into the terminal, and find the Paste menu item in the edit menu disabled. However, if I paste into another application and cut from there, I can paste into the terminal.
(if it is a bug) which project I should report a bug to (gnome or KeePass?).
I am looking for music player like banshee but do not want mono . Banshee unfortunately requires mono
[Code]...
Obviously have not given all all the deps, but the last 7 odd ones tell you what I mean. If anybody knows of any good music player which has similar functionality as banshee lemme know. Look for two things:-
a. Should be able to play all and any music format (have all the plugins) b. Should be able to close it and have it in the system tray playing in the background.
I've got a relatively simple question. I'm trying to start a program that must be run with mono when my system boots. It's a webserver (McMyAdmin if that helps) so I'd also like to start it as a specific user
I'm just wondering if it's possible to install "fedora"'s gnome-packagekit with it's GUI (gpk-application) in debian squeeze rather than installing "ubuntu" software center? Are there packages availabe in .deb file format in any repository?
I have a machine where I dabble a bit with mono and .NET in my spare time. It's running Jessie and upgraded mono to 3.0.6 from 2.x and MonoDevelop to 4.0.
Rebuilt my webapp after upping the target platform to Mono .NET 4.5 and it works fine in the debugger.
When copying the app to the production folder (on the same machine) it will no longer start and apache's error log says:
Code: Select allSystem.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices.ExtensionA ttribute' from assembly 'System.Web'. at Mono.WebServer.VPathToHost.CreateHost (Mono.WebServer.ApplicationServer server, Mono .WebServer.WebSource webSource) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at Mono.WebServer.ApplicationServer.GetApplicationForPath (System.String vhost, Int32 p ort, System.String path, Boolean defaultToRoot) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at (wrapper remoting-invoke-with-check) Mono.WebServer.ApplicationServer:GetApplication ForPath (string,int,string,bool)
[Code] ....
I understand from posts like this one: [URL] .....
...that Microsoft moved the ExtensionAttribute from System.Core.dll to mscorlib.dll in .NET 4.5. And that a [TypeForwardedTo] attribute is supposed to make this transparent.
I get this - but have no clue to how to make my webapp work? It does so under the debugger so it obviously does some magic.
Having trouble with pulseaudio (0.9.21, Debian Squeeze) failing to properly recognize a Turtle Beach X-ray headset?
My tv connects fine, playing Dolby Digital through it without issue, but my computer doesn't. (A possible side effect: Flash videos play in slow-mo when the headset is connected to the computer's bluetooth adapter, but not when the headset is disconnected.)
Is there a way to tell Pulseaudio to give the headset 6 channels?
Some info:
Code: Select all~ » pulseaudio --dump-modules module-alsa-card ALSA Card module-alsa-sink ALSA Sink module-alsa-source ALSA Source module-always-sink Always keeps at least one sink loaded even if it's a null one module-augment-properties Arugment the property sets of streams with additional static information module-bluetooth-device Bluetooth audio sink and source
I keep losing my keyboard in Virtualbox. I "fix" it be reverting back to the host and then switching to the VM and it will be back. Googling brought up others having similar issues with Ubuntu, but no solution that I saw.My host is Jessie and client is Wheezy, both with Xfce. The mouse works just fine.
I installed Debian without choosing any check boxes, so I didn't get the GUI or anything Is there a way I can go back and install the GUI without reinstalling the whole installation and losing anything?
i first noticed when i tried to get mono via sudo apt-get install mono i got the error
[Code]...
E: Package 'mono' has no installation candidate then i tried to get it through the software center and i noticed the software center wasn't opening.... so i tried searching to find if someone else had the proroblem, they did, one solution was to reinstall python but if i open syapitic software i get the error
When I boot into Debian (lenny) my clock is always 4 hours slow. Whether I set it manually, or set it to get it's time from the network, the next time I boot into debian, it's back to being 4 hours slow.
I'm not sure if it is the connection I'm losing or something else is happening and I just can't fathom it out.
I have set up Debian from netinstall. I installed openssh server and Apache. The server is connected to our local network with the IP address 192.168.0.51 and shares a physical port on a simple ethernet switch.
I can SSH into the server from Ubuntu but it takes around one minute to ask for a password and another 20 seconds or so to bring up the prompt. I have checked twice to make sure their are no conflicting IP addresses on the network (all static). The connection seems fine but if I am away from the secure shell for more than a couple of minutes or I minimize the terminal window I can no longer type anything at the remote machines prompt. Reconnection without restarting the server is impossible on most attempts and the terminal just hangs before the password prompt appears.
I have the same kind of issue with Apache. I can view Apaches test index.html using just the IP address from my browser but after a few minutes I get the 'connecting to 192.168.0.52' in the status bar and it never reconnects.
I am interested in installing openSUSE on my computer and my PC already has a Debian installation on it.What is the easiest/best way of installing openSUSE without losing any data?
For some reason whenever I load gnome-terminal using 9.10 I get this message: To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>". See "man sudo_root" for details.
After I installed the "GNOME Software Development" group with yum, I couldn,t log into the Gnome desktop. An error message says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. log out and try again", and it repeated every time I tried to log in. I created a file "gnome-shell.desktop" in the ~/.config/autostart directory, the error message no longer appears, but I get only a wallpaper which means no top bar or else. The file's content is as follows:
