Installation :: Can't Load Windows 7 After Installing Ubuntu / Resolve This?

Oct 16, 2010

I have Windows 7 on SSD and have installed Ubuntu on a separate HDD.
When the PC boots, I get the boot manager menu, if I choose Windows 7 it fails with error "no such device or partition".

I can mount the SSD and see all the Windows files still there, I think that the boot manager just needs to be pointed in the right direction but not sure how.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Load/install 10.10

Nov 2, 2010

I have a Gateway laptop currently running Win Vista Home Basic. I have grown tired of repeatedly reinstalling this OS so I thought I would give Ubuntu a shot. The laptop is running a 1.6 GHz Celeron, 1470 MB of RAM, and has an 80 Gig hard drive. My problem is that I cannot get Ubuntu to load/install. I cannot run it from CD, I cannot setup as dual boot, and I cannot setup as a standalone. I am not worried about wiping out my Vista, as I said I have grown tired of it. OH and I cannot locate my Vista install disk at this time either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Load The Driver For Matrox M9148?

Oct 18, 2010

I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 on my x86_64 system. The upgrade went fine except it cannot load the driver for my Matrox M9148. ("m9x")I simply get a "Cannot load driver" error. (there is more to it, will paste when I finish work)Basically the driver is there and in place, it loads it but cannot use it.When I go to reinstall the driver again manually, it dies with an error only supports Xorg up to 7.5So, now I see this is an Xorg and driver compat issue.I have reported it to Matrox and am awaiting a reply.

In the mean time though, since I need my machine working, is there anyway around the issue, or could I even roll back xorg to whatever it was in 10.04 to get the drivers working again?

Fedora Installation :: Installing XEN With 11 - Unable To Open Connection To Hypervisor URI 'xen:///'

Jun 19, 2009

I have been only using the free vmware server thus far for my virtualization I have recently installed Fedora 11 and am currently looking at using the XEN virtualization software. I am currently running and upgrade from F10 to Fedora 11 with the PAE kernel. Also I am using KDE 4 with kmod-nivida drivers. Now here is what I have done

To install Virtualization requirements I did the following: sudo yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'

I then also did: sudo yum install kvm qemu libvirt python-virtinst

I then installed xen:
sudo yum install xen*

Now, I read that i needed "kernel-xen" but it doesn't appear to exists a "yum list kernel*' only displays kernel packages and the kernel PAE pakages so I figured I don't need it I then started all the xen services and libvirtd service Opened virt-manager and added a new connection: hupervisor: Xen and connection: local

I get the following error: Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///': <class 'libvirt.libvirtError'> unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused
None

I guess my question now is... what is the difference between the hypervisor: QEMU/KVM and XEN. Because I seem to be able to create a VM using this. My VM is an XP vm for work purposes to run some windows only software I would like to use XEN as I just have my mind set on it but I might just be ignorant and on the wrong track is there a how to guide for fedora 11 and xen? the fedora 7 guide i found needs the kernel-xen installed.

Installation :: Unable To Boot Window XP After Installing Fedora / Solution For This?

Sep 25, 2009

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.

Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.

This is the result of fdisk -l code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Would Not Load After Install / Will Load Via Live Cd

Feb 26, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.

So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

Here are my specs:

I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

Ubuntu :: Can't Load 10.04 After Installing Fedora?

Jul 26, 2010

I download the latest Fedora live disc to try it out for a little while. I decided to install it to my hard drive to have both Ubuntu and Fedora. I went through the process and had it compress Ubuntu (I guess it moved the files together but I'm new to this so I can't be sure.) Now when I have the startup screen to pick either Fedora or Ubuntu, Fedora works properly but Ubuntu gives me Error 13. It can't find the kernel. I went into the command line and went to where I knew Ubuntu was saved (hd0,0 and Fedora is hd0,2) and ran cat /etc/issue to check that it was there (read somewhere online to do that) and it returned with: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
l

I think all I have to do is edit the pre-boot options or something, as they are way different looking than Fedora's and I think they may just be insufficient.

Ubuntu :: Can't Load Windows XP After Installing Studio?

My Windows installation is in /dev/sda1, and my partition with all my files are in /dev/sda5. I am not sure if that is supposed to be that way, but in the "Drive/Partition Info" section it say sda1 starts at 63, while in the "Boot Info Summary" section it say that sda5 "starts at sector 63" too.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB - Can't Load Up Ubuntu After Installing 11.3

Whilst Opensuse's replacement Grub correctly identified Windows as an alternative system it did not do the same for Ubuntu. I've been tinkering around in menu.lst (after taking back ups) and I can't ever get Ubuntu running - I either get a Grub error 15 (file not found) or error 17 (unable to read partition). By booting on a live CD I can see that all the information is still there, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get to it from Grub! Did Opensuse move the partitions around during install?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Installing Nvidia Mx200 Driver - X Will Not Load ?

Dec 31, 2010

I am trying to setup a computer with xubuntu 10.10 for my dad. It is mostly working, but flash animations/games run somewhat poorly. I think I might be able to fix this by using the non-free nvidia drivers, but I cannot seem to get them installed.

Sysinfo reports that the video card is an nvidia geforce mx200, so I downloaded the nvidia 96 driver package from the repositories, ran the configuration program, & rebooted. As you may guess, x did not load.

I have been working on this intermittently for a few weeks, & I do not remember everything I might have tried to fix it, but here is what I am sure of:

Sysinfo reports that the video card is an nvidia geforce mx200

when i try "sudo modprobe nvidia," I get the message "FATAL: Module nvidia not found." "sudo modprobe nvidia-96" gives no such error.

When I check the Xorg.0.log, I find:

The nouveau driver does not seem to work either, but if I remove the xorg.conf file, x works okay. How to get Flashplayer running more smoothly.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Load Up GRUB?

Jan 28, 2011

I'm having difficulties booting into my Wubi 10.04 install on my computer. I've been using this install for at least 6 months now with minimal problems, but this one is serious enough to make me have to use my old Microsoft Vista install (which is no fun because it's, well, Vista). But anyway, to the problem:I got on my computer this morning and turned it on. It came up like normal showing the logo DELL as the BIOS (I believe revision A12 if it matters at all) boots up and then goes to the Windows GRUB menu. From there, like normal it shows two options: Windows Vista and Ubuntu. And from there I selected Ubuntu. Like normal it has a few small command-line things it goes through, but then it does one that I've never seen before and goes so fast I wasn't quite able to read it, and then the screen stops and restarts from the beginning.

Normally, after this it would bring up the GRUB menu showing the various kernels that are installed for Ubuntu. There, I would select the latest kernel and continue on to the Ubuntu login screen where I would login and there I'd be on Ubuntu. This might be because yesterday I did some system updates on Ubuntu and it wanted a restart (it said "Restart Required" and the power button on the screen was red). But, instead I just delayed the restart and eventually just Shut Down the computer that night, thinking the Shut Down might render the same thing.I'm hoping I can at least go back and recover the files I had on Ubuntu. Not that any were really important, but I'd kinda want them back regardless. If this is impossible, what should I do to get back at using Ubuntu again? Should I try to partition my harddrive? Should I reinstall Wubi? Or should I even just try to fix whatever is broken that prohibits me getting on to Ubuntu?
