i kept ubuntu cd into my laptop and then i restart my lap but it doesnt show anything ,again it shows my windows xp,i need to install ubuntu and i dont want delete xp,
View 1 RepliesI have an ASUS 1005HA. Recently installed a new hard drive and made 3 partitions. One for Windows 7, one for Ubuntu, one for storage. I installed windows 7 first. Then, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook remix. It loads all the way to the end, tells me to take the CD out when its done, but when I restart, its like nothing happened. Windows 7 boots straight up to itself.
I tried redoing the GRUB loader while using the CD, but that didnt work either. So, how do I make it so I can see both OS? Because windows is running superior right now on my netbook, and I don't like that. But I need it for work.
I installed it from a cd and it wouldn't work. (froze in the process). I then tried to install it through windows wubi and that didn't work (wouldnt boot) since I was unaware it was a known issue and thought it was me doing something wrong I uninstalled it,reformatted the hard drive and tried to install via a cd again this time it fully iinstalled but when I rebooted it tells me unable to mount drives and a shell will be shown.
in the end I have no files on ubuntu so I would like to clean up all reminance of the previous installs and be able to use a working install. since I have been installing and reistalling for the better part of 8 hours.Yexcuse the post sloppiness using my phone)
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my second hard drive, and now I can't boot into Vista (installed on hard drive #1). Grub2 just doesn't seem to be recognizing that there is a Windows Vista installation on the first hard drive.
I followed this guide (with Fabien's changes) because it seemed like they were having the exact same problem. But after rebooting, Vista is still not showing in the GRUB menu. In fact, the GRUB menu doesn't even show up unless I press Shift because it thinks that Ubuntu is the only OS installed on my computer.

When I was installing Ubuntu to HD2 (the 500gb one), I got a peculiar message saying that Windows was installed on it. There wasn't anything on HD2 though, because Windows Vista was most definitely installed on HD1.
However, if I chose to overwrite HD1 with Ubuntu, the message wouldn't come up. It seemed like the installer was confused as to which hard drive actually held my Windows Vista install.
When I download a game from the Ubuntu Software manager, it doesn't show up in the applications. Is there another place where the files are located? And how can I execute them? I am trying to run Mednafen
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Each OS is installed on a separate partition of one hard drive. I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.10 netbook edition to 11.04 and something went wrong. After the grub menu I get the password window on that typical magenta screen with lights. Afterwards I get a message, that the netbook connected to the internet, but the Unity desktop doesnt show. Still the magenta desktop without anything. Already have tried to select the previous linux edition on the grub-menu, but no change.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!
I just upgraded to F15 from 14 and F15 doesn't show up in GRUB only 2 kernels of F14. I can't obviously boot into either one, so now I am stuck with nothing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had Vista installed then Ubuntu Grub showed both... then I wanted to try Fedora 13 an after install I had Fedora Bootloader but it only shows Fedora / other and other is Vista... how do I manually enter Ubuntu partition into /boot/grub.conf or should I just reinstall ubuntu grub and hopefully that will pick up vista and fedora? Lost on where to go with this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am about to make a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 on my 160gb hdd and keep my home directory. Here I also have Windows XP installed, the swap, home and root. All of these are done manually and given names such as 'sda1', 'sda5' ect.(I do see them in system monitor > file systems) The problem is that the installer doesn't seem to show me these tables. I only get a 160gb big chunk. GParted will not show it either (but as root is running from their I guess it cant?).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with pentium 3 that i'd like to run ubuntu 10.04 on. I've installed it from a livecd (the cd is fine, because i used that cd to install 10.04 on another machine, and its working perfectly). The installation went fine, and on the first boot everything worked fine as well. but when i tried it again, the computer started but at the desktop there were no panels on the top or bottom, although every thing else was working.
I could use Alt+F2 to run any application that comes preinstalled on the ubuntu cd including the terminal, but i can't access Applications, Places, System, etc.
Everytime at startup during boot there is a message that prints "error: no suitable mode found" "error :unknown command 'terminal'" (without the quotes).
this computer has a bit of a history as i once tried to install linux mint on it but failed because of a bad livecd. the grub got installed wrongly, tried to reinstall xp, didn't work, then ultimately after trying a few other things turned to DBAN, which surprisingly also failed crashing everytime i ran it before completing its erase, which leads me to believe that Dban didn't leave my hard drives in too good a condition. when the ubuntu live cd worked however i was ignited with a brand new spark of hope, and even that now is starting to diminish, is there no hope for my pentium 3.
I went to install the 10.10 RC yesterday but to my surprise when I got to the partitioning stage it showed up my drive as being blank, with no existing partitions.
Has anybody else had this issue? I'm not sure what to do as I had the same issue on the beta, I just assumed it would be fixed.
I have a 500GB Sata HDD and i'm running an AMD64 processor so the RC was the amd_64 version.
I created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.

The installation completed successfully but after that the bootloader doesn't show after the system reboot. So it is just black screen. I have an option for booting Debian (which will go to a black screen) and go to command line which looks like command prompt in Windows. I tried going to the command and it shows

I don't know which command to input since I'm a newbie and not familiar with Linux. I installed Debian from USB using unetbootin. What I should do to successfully install Debian?
I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.
I'm in 9.10, I had KDE 4.3 now with SC 4.4, and it doesn't reboot or shut down from any graphical way I can access. Power management works otherwise, and I can shut down from the command line.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a huge problem I can't move with. I bought an Asus N61JV laptop and put Ubuntu on it. There was a proprietry software (graphic card booster from nvidia) that asked me to restart the laptop afterwards. I did so, however, the laptop won't boot at all not. It doesn't respond to anyhing, I only hear it working. All I can do is turn it on and off. I'm getting desperate, I've had it for like 2 hours! Please help me, I'm almost crying. I'm not an experienced UNIX user and I totally don't know what to do. It boots until the point where I see Ubuntu writen and then the display like turns off. I can't even put windows there, it dosn't react to f9 or anyhing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu 10.04 on my 500GB Samsung drive. Today it suddenly stopped responding, not only X11 but the whole system (Ctrl + alt + f1 didn't worked either) so I had to force restart it. Since then, I can't boot it again - right after memory test and general motherboard splash, the white line cursor goes about 3 lines down of topline and stops there. After about 5 minutes there's still no GRUB menu. Finally I had reinstalled the system (which is not really much pain since my "home" was on other partition than the system, but it didn't helped - still the same. On the other hand, booting USB Live works perfectly fine (I'm using it right now). I have an access to all the partitions, all the data seems to be there, SMART utility says the hdd is healthy ..
Oh, and I tried reinstalling with grub-reinstall before, it said that the reinstallation went fine but didn't helped either
I installed nVidia drivers for Ubuntu 11.04 but when I went to restart the computer (to complete the installation) it froze on the splash screen at the third "dot" and I had to turn off the computer manually.
I can shut down the computer, but every time I restart I get the same issue (except sometimes only the "dots" appear with lines of code running in the background).
I read on-line that hitting "F1" or "ALT + F1" right before the splash screen appears might work...but it doesn't.
My concern is that maybe the nVidia driver is "activated but not currently in use" because it didn't install properly due to the whole not restarting on it's own thing.

I'm used to Peer Guardian 2 in Windows and I know it has to show some more stuff than nothing.. Your help is sincerely appreciated cuz I'm so new to Ubuntu. FYI: Mobloquer and Peer Guardian 2 are IP blocking programs.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running CentOS 5.3 64bit and from the get go I've had problems with the Apache serverMore specifically, on what seems to be a random occurance, the apache server stops to respond.The process is still running, but nothing happens with it, and it is not responding.The /var/logs/httpd/error_log is blank for the occurance and only shows an entry after I give it a restartSo I'm a bit confused about what is going on.With that said, I need to make sure the httpd is working one way or another.I don't want to force a restart service every 10 minutes as this seems a bit too much.However, I do want to have the following:run a crond every minute to do:
