Dec 11, 2010I presently dual boot with Vista Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since the installation of Ubuntu about 8 months ago, my Grub menu at boot up shows all the updates for Ubuntu 2.6.32-24, -25 and -26. How can I eliminate the first two and only leave the latest update?

May 11, 2010I have duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 910. I've just downloaded and installed the latest update for Ubuntu 9.10. After my latest update, Windows will no longer start. When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

Ubuntu Installation :: Latest Update Affects Shutdown And Volume
Sep 3, 2010There's some bug or other error in the updates I've just installed. I run Update Manager very frequently (almost daily). The last time I ran it was 2 days ago, so this bug can only have been released into updates today or yesterday. I ran it this evening and there were quite a lot of new updates (around 50mb in total), and I installed them all without really checking to see what they were - but as I'm new to Linux I don't exactly have any weird or rare software running on my laptop, so they only would have been for Ubuntu itself or some very common programs.
After installing it required a reboot. Upon booting up again, the volume icon has turned to 'Mute All' and I am unable to turn my laptop off. Telling it to shut down simply causes the screen to go black for a couple of seconds and then return to the login screen. I also notice that the Suspend/Hibernate options have disappeared, and I now only have the option to Log Out, Restart or Shut Down. {As I'm new to Linux I have no idea how best to proceed, or even how to officially 'report' this if indeed it is a bug contained in one of the updates.}

Ubuntu Installation :: Selection Won't Leave The GRUB Selections
Jan 14, 2010Finally got a dual boot on this laptop the way I liked it (LOVE my Win7, really like UBUNTU for certain things like getting booted and on the net fast...great). As I was editing and rebooting the GRUB settings UBUNTU got it's updates and installed (including one on GRUB that I hadn't seen before - WITH WARNINGS). Now I can't seem to get this last entry out of the boot menu: vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic. It has all this listed now (had dual entries for everything like mem test before):
vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-generic
vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
Windows 7
I got rid of the extra entries like memtest and all using: sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ and such variations..still though I got one stuck in the boot selections. It won't remove the old linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic build entry from GRUB (and they both point to the same place). It has a -14 and -17 entry in it now. Like I said both load to the same mount point.
I mean I removed like five extra entries from GRUB using that command after the update (and had done it before about two months ago) but the linux vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic selection won't leave the GRUB selections now. I really thought I had it figured out to the bomb having my laptop dual booting before, just didn't like how UBUNTU used my disk space by default last time so I decided to rebuild the laptop.

Jun 28, 2010I referred to this video, to install ubuntu(NOT on windows partition) and also run windows XP, and im well enjoying ubuntu. i have some hard-disk issues, and i'm going to format the whole hard-disk. I will format and repartition using windows xp installer. I'm leaving 20 GB for ubuntu. So I can install ubuntu in 2 ways...
1) While re-partitioning, i can leave 20 GB unallocated and later put ubuntu there
OR
2) Install windows XP the normal way, and then allocate 20GB for ubuntu using GPART - by shrinking a windows partition. (as shown in video)

Jan 9, 2010Creating a new thread for the specific chipset. Laptop is an Acer 5534 with the Atheros chipset. Normally uses the Ath9k driver. To get it to work originally I had to download, compile and install the latest compat_wireless drivers. See post here: {URL] I did the update that came through today and after the reboot there was no wireless internet. It alternates between reboots between having no wireless networks at all detected to never connection to the [AUTO] network previously defined. To fix the problem, I downloaded the latest compat_wireless, compat-wireless-2009-12-11.tar.bz2, and followed the same procedure. I did not do a make clean. To solve the problem temporarily, I edited the grub config and set default to 2 instead of 0 (1 would be 0 in recovery mode).

Jun 6, 2010I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.
This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.
