After the latest update of testing, Debian started to reboot at at startup, after just few messages shown (that's all after GRUB choice is made). If I pick up older kernel it boots OK. What should I look for to determine the cause? (I.e. what log etc.).

These include some important packages, like network-manager-gnome for example. Was it really intended to be removed? Without it, it's impossible to manage network connections from Gnome (only manual option of editing interfaces config is left). Is it a bug, or some incomplete intention? apt suggests to autoremove these packages. Should they all be retained, or only some of them, or it's supposed to be none? Removing some of them makes sense for me (like Epiphany for example), but some not at all.

I just installed Xubuntu 10.10. It indicated 202 updates, so I started to update and next thing I notice is that the computer is frozen on probably the screensaver. I reboot the computer by pressing the reset-button (ctl-alt-del doesn't work) and after reboot it flashes the update-tool processing a kernel-update. Then it flashes back to login screen and hangs. Another reboot I only get to login screen and it hangs. When booting into recovery mode, it hangs on

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter the last update in testing, (02/21/16), my sound stopped, (it did have an unfixed issue with the jacks and muting, things would be muted on reboot, until I plugged in something, then removed the plug from the front jack), I have never had a sound issue, so I am a lot lost here...
Here is what I know... If I use speaker-test as root, I hear sound... If I use speaker-test as my normal user account, (non root), I see no errors in the term window, but hear no sound... To me this says permissions issue, but I am a member of audio.
I rely on NFS shares to mount home directories and the shared apt cache on my home workstations. Since the last update, rpc.statd has broken and the service fails to run at boot. When init encounters nfs-common, the system shows: Starting NFS common utilities: statd failed!
and then it hangs on trying to mount /var/cache/apt
if anybody who uses testing has any clue as to whether there is a fix coming from the upstream, or if there is a config fix for it.
AMD 64 Upgrade to testing last night killed my internet connection. The lan works, I can ping the dns server from my IP, however no mail, browser possible. Is something in testing broken again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been running 5.05. Just in the last few weeks after I update the screen will go black after a few reboots. I believe it has something to do with the ATI Drivers. If I clean install and install the smxi drivers after a few reboots the screen goes black right before the log in screen. This also happens with Mepis and Dream Linux which are Debian Base.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 8.1 LXDE 64bit on a Toshiba Chromebook cb30 from usb. When I select 'install' the laptop restarts and gets me back to the installer menu. I removed 'quiet' from the boot options and it seems that the reboot happens after initrd.gz is read. I previously installed the 32bit version on the chromebook and the installation process worked pretty much without any issues. I might have added 'mem=1024m' to the boot options, though even if I did, this doesn't do anything to my current attempt.
The chromebook processor according to `uname -a` is x86_64 Intel Celeron 2955U. how I could install the image or start debugging the issue?
I checked the md5sum of the iso image, and the integrity of the DVD passes, but when I run the kfreebsd-amd64 DVD I get to the partitioner stage, set out my partitions, click 'yes' to format and then my computer reboots. Is this a known error or a bad burn?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter the latest update of Debian Wheezy, about three days ago, one of my machines won't boot anymore. The update was done by:

I get the error message: "Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/71c... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
The dir /dev/disk contains only "by-id" and "by-path".
I booted with the rescue system, dropped into a shell and recreated the ramdisk with

dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
But without success. On another machine the update went flawlessly.
After updating Squeeze (i386) on my Via C7 laptop with the Via Openchrome video driver vlc video ouput shows only alternating white/green grainy vertical bars. I tried changing the video output driver to x11 and sdl without success. I'll be trying to find a fix and if successful I'll post back. For the rest of you just beware of the latest upgrades. More information - My AMD/ATI desktop also running Squeeze (amd64) updated fine. It has the onboard ATI 2400 video driver.

Is there a way to upgrade cups to support the latest printers? For example if I am using 8.04 LTS server and I buy a newish printer, it won't work. Am I able to add a repository or apt-get upgrade to get the latest version?

When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

There's some bug or other error in the updates I've just installed. I run Update Manager very frequently (almost daily). The last time I ran it was 2 days ago, so this bug can only have been released into updates today or yesterday. I ran it this evening and there were quite a lot of new updates (around 50mb in total), and I installed them all without really checking to see what they were - but as I'm new to Linux I don't exactly have any weird or rare software running on my laptop, so they only would have been for Ubuntu itself or some very common programs.
After installing it required a reboot. Upon booting up again, the volume icon has turned to 'Mute All' and I am unable to turn my laptop off. Telling it to shut down simply causes the screen to go black for a couple of seconds and then return to the login screen. I also notice that the Suspend/Hibernate options have disappeared, and I now only have the option to Log Out, Restart or Shut Down. {As I'm new to Linux I have no idea how best to proceed, or even how to officially 'report' this if indeed it is a bug contained in one of the updates.}
I just installed the Debian testing release(with LXDE) from this week. Everything works great except the network card. I know the network card works because Windows and the Parted Magic Live cd recognize it. Also "lspci" seems to list the card, but when I fire "ifconfig -a" it is not listed there.

- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?
The update that broke things contained some 400 packages.The problem is NOT hardware related. There are 2 other linux installs on the laptop that work the way they should.This is all related to using a wired network connection.The update removed the package network-config and did not replace it. Not sure that is the problem because that package is related to the gui and I can not get an ip in cli.
I am stuck at cli because the new kernel broke nvidia (pretty normal). There was also a new xserver, which tends to break nvidia, and as I recall a new kde. Anyway I am unable to rebuild the nvidia driver because I can not establish a network connection to my network to get the packages needed to fix it.
I presently dual boot with Vista Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since the installation of Ubuntu about 8 months ago, my Grub menu at boot up shows all the updates for Ubuntu 2.6.32-24, -25 and -26. How can I eliminate the first two and only leave the latest update?

Whether I should upgrade to Stable before Testing, or just point the repos to testing and jump. Will it make any difference? If I hit a snag, I'll do the clean install.

I have 2 debian testing cds 1. the first one I have downloaded at some months ago and the second one I have downloaded today. With the first cd I can install debian with out problem but not with the second. when I go to format it tells me that it was unable to format the disk. I try to format it with ext4 with journal, I also try with ext3 but I take the same message. What I must do to be able to install the debian with the lastet testing cd?

Also if anyone knows of a good link regarding this particular upgrade, by all means please share. I have only been able to dig up a bit of dirt on the topic but they were concerning older Debian releases. Maybe theres not much difference?
