I have windows7 installed in my laptop. I tried installing Redhat linux in it, and I was successful. But then I logged in with windows7 and deleted the partition in which I had installed redhat through computer management. Now my system doesnt boot with windows instead it boots with GRUB. Also to inform that the deleted linux partition I merged with Windows.
View 2 Repliesgot myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally.What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.
I have one install (Slack 12.2) on /dev/sda11, and GRUB (GNU GRUB 0.97) boots it without a problem. I just installed a new Slack 13.1 on /dev/sda1, and GRUB fails to boot it as follows:Quote:

Since upgrading to Lucid (I think), I can't boot into Windows. When I select the Windows Vista entry in GRUB, the screen goes blank for a moment before returning me to the GRUB menu.I have tried pressing 'e' to edit the GRUB entry before booting, and what I find is that it says the root is hd0,1Since my Windows partition is sda1 in GPartEd, should that translate to, for example hd0,0 ?The only reason I want to boot into Windows in the first place is to install a BIOS upgrade from HP, which only works with their Windows software. If someone can suggest an alternative way of doing this then I won't need to boot into Windows at all.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot set up on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop I have Windows Vista originally installed and i installed RHEL 5 a while ago they used to sit happily together.However After upgrading RHEL 5 from 5.3 to 5.5 yesterday and configuring grub to boot into Vista by default it refuses to do that and boots into RHEL 5 by default.
The laptop used to boot straight into vista but i thought i,d learn how grub works by configuring it, after the rhel5 upgrade. But after changing the DEFAULT value from 0 to 1 and then back from 1 to 0 still grub only boots into RLinux RHEL 5 by default regardless. Can someone help me please i need to make my laptop boot straight into Windows Vista by default and not RHEL 5 This is what my grub.conf looks like

I installed Fedora 13 on a separate partition and it deleted all of my openSUSE entries in grub. Or the boot menu, whichever is correct. From another thread, I found these commands and tried it:

hd0,3 contained one of my openSUSE installs. Everything went well and grub accepted all of these commands except quit. So I used esc and rebooted. The reboot brought up the grub shell again. I could find no way to boot anything. Then I used the 'repair installation' option from the 11.2 dvd and installed a new boot loader for /dev/sda2 which contains 11.2.
This was successful, so I went to the YaST bootloader tool and added /dev/sda3 (Milestone 5) and /dev/sda4 (Fedora) and rebooted. But these two partitions still boot into grub instead of loading the correct kernel.
After installing the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, I decided to have a new partition and install Windows 7 on it for development purposes. So this is the method I worked with:
Partitioned the hard disk with gparted
Formatted the drive in NTFS
Installed Windows
Booted into Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and re-installed grub on the MBR Now after restarting the system a grub command line boots up. I was able to boot into ubuntu with the following commands:

Is there any way how to load up the grub GUI with the options to boot up Ubuntu or Windows 7 respectively?
I having a problem getting my grub loader to see one of my hard drives. I added a drive, and my grub loader lost track of where everything was. I couldn't get my old linux (Red Hat 9) so I installed SuSe on my new hard drive. But I need my be able to boot from my old hard drive because it has apps that only run on the earlier version. Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything

View 2 Replies View Relatedgot four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange behaviour with GRUB, and I don't know much about it. The problem is that GRUB is looking at the wrong place when it starts. I have a /boot partition (/dev/sda1) with everything for booting and grub. This gets updated when I update, say, the kernel, grub, etc. But I also have a /backups partition (/dev/sda4) with a directory /backups/boot/grub that is a copy of /boot/grub. The /backups/boot directory only has the /backups/boot/grub directory, not the kernels, etc.
If I delete the /backups/boot/grub directory, I get a "grub>" console at startup, and system doesn't boot. SO: Why is grub looking at /backups/boot/grub instead of /boot/grub and how can I fix this? This is my grub.conf, identical in both directories, and both pointing to /boot=/dev/sda1=(hd0,0):

I have a dual boot system (Linux and Windows) that I normally run headless and which boots by default into Linux (which is what I use mainly). This all works fine, except that on occasions when I want to boot Windows I have to plug in a keyboard and monitor just to select Windows in the initial grub boot screen. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this ? I don't mind if I have to boot Linux first, I just want to be able to reboot into Windows occasionally without having to plug in any peripherals.

Recently though, I got netflix and found that there is no support for Linux distros. So, begrudgingly, I installed a small Windows Partition on my computer. So here's the problem: I can't boot back into Ubuntu. Whenever I turn on my computer, it automatically boots up into Windows 7. I know my Ubuntu partition is still there, because when I boot from my live disc I can see it. Is there a way I can fix this using Windows and/or a live disc?

Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
I would love to be able to use TrueCrypt consistently across all my machines, be they Windows or Linux. As it stands, I can do full-disk encryption with pre-boot authentication only on Windows.
I don't really understand why this is. Are there technical challenges specific to Linux/Mac that make full disk encryption harder? Does anyone know whether TrueCrypt will support this in the near future.
PS. yes, I'm aware that there are other options. My goal is to simplify my life here and use the one tool across all machines.
I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)
