Downloaded the Wubi exe today to install 10.10 on a new netbook. But at launch it reads, "You are about to install Ubuntu 10.04". So I guess wubi has not been updated yet for the new release?
View 3 RepliesI'm currently running F11 x86 and want to update to F13 x64, so a new drive and fresh install and copy all the config & data from old drive. and Prey, a lot....I'll be installing F13 x64 later this weekend, But F14 will be out in a few months then F15 and so on.I've tried the upgrade option (x86 to x86 in the past) on the install dvd but it doesn't work and I wind up with a broken install and have to do a fresh install after saving most of the import data and config files, but I usually missing something and get hosed. Part of the problem could be using Nvidia drivers for video and several applications installed from several different repos.I've never been able to safely uninstall the Nvidia driver and still have a working system, let alone upgrade to a newer version and still get a visible desktop.
I was thinking that couldn't I just edit a yum file and point it to a new repository and have it upgrade the machine with out all the fuss?I followed a procedure once or twice on how to do a inplace upgrade, but that didn't work either. I'd like to keep the machine running the latest bits, but with all the pain and suffering I need a simpler method to do it. Is there a procedure or process I can run or follow to keep Fedora in sync with the latest release with out having to continuously swap disks, reinstall and copy critical data files?
I just bought a USB Hard Drive to install ubuntu to show friends. I was able to boot the Live CD but I noticed the option to install to USB was missing. I believe I last saw this in 8.10. So, I went searching the forums for solutions but all I found was the Windows Executable "usb-installer.exe" . So, I try to look for this, its not there. Does anyone know what I need to do to do this? I'm going to be using this as a portable install across lots of different computers, Does this make a difference?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI backed up all my Wubi-files + the boot.ini etc. I reinstalled my Windows OS, then put my Wubi-files on a new partition D: . Put the wubildr.mdr file + wubildr in the C: dir. Changed the boot.ini to C:wubildr.mdr = "Ubuntu" . But when I select Ubuntu in the boot manager I get an error message (Couldn't load Windows, ntoskrnl corrupt - or something).What do I do wrong? Can't I just install a new Wubi using the installer and then replace the disk-file by the old one?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.
I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?
I have Ubuntu 7.04 64-bit PC disc but unfortunately it dose not have Wubi Installer. How can I get Wubi Installer and the disc has no space it just contains Ubuntu. I want to install it from windows so that my Files should be intact and along with that I want it to be able to execute my Windows.

After install the system rebooted (complete with grub menu) and the KDE desktop launch successfully, however the task bar and menus are fuzzy, distorted and unreadable when I click them. Do I just need to change my display resolution? How do I do this without being able to see a menu?

I did exactly that, then it asks to reboot which I did, and still no ubuntu. All I have is 3 folders, one icon and one application.

I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe Ubuntu website doesn't include the md5 checksums for the current 10.04 matrix. The forum announcement thread also makes no mention of these checksums. That means servers could be distributing defective isos and on day one, that could mean tens of thousands of downloads could be defective. I have to say that md5sums have been a mainstay of Linux ISO distribution for a decade, this despite whatever flaws one might find in it, yet for the last few releases of U, md5sum data are the hardest data to locate on the Ubuntu website, and on release day, they are critical.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used ubuntu since v.6 & it runs perfect with my machine Toshiba laptop SatelliteM70 I use ubuntu multi boot with XP Home individual portion , I used startupmanager to control the boot option except last v.10.4 LT it drives me crazy I upgrade from distribution 9.04 the 9.10 then troubles started I never able to burn v.9.10 into a CD or DVD always stuck with the phrase try to burn the ISO with lower speed the CD ejected with out completing of burning process then I had to make upgrade through ubuntu update .
The other problem pups up eventually with v10.04LT had upgraded from 9.10 & after full update to 9.10 & switch to 10.01LT through new upgrade available.Rebooted the System , I had the boot option when I select ubuntu it boots fine ,but ubuntu logo blinks for less than one second goes directly to terminal black screen with prompt commands no Gnome it asks me to login then password & the same user & password I used before upgrading I tried many things to have the boot selection like before but no use only through Telnet commands screen .
I was still using Ubuntu 9.04, and I decided to upgrade up to 10.04. Upgrading to Karmic was no problem but then I tried to upgrade to Lucid and I always get the message "Can't download release notes", I also cannot upgrade from the command line (is 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' discontinued?). I've tried several mirrors during the last couple of days but still I can't get it to work.

Anyway, I have an old computer and would like to get the most out of it. I am running 10.10 right now, and would like to downgrade to Warty Warthog, which I used a few years ago, and seemed fast. It's older, so it can be lighter on the resources than 10.10 I suppose. Anyway, I cant find it anywhere. Also, I'll need installation instructions since it is probably pretty heard to install.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
