Ubuntu Installation :: Where Are Md5sums For 10.04 Release Images

Apr 29, 2010

The Ubuntu website doesn't include the md5 checksums for the current 10.04 matrix. The forum announcement thread also makes no mention of these checksums. That means servers could be distributing defective isos and on day one, that could mean tens of thousands of downloads could be defective. I have to say that md5sums have been a mainstay of Linux ISO distribution for a decade, this despite whatever flaws one might find in it, yet for the last few releases of U, md5sum data are the hardest data to locate on the Ubuntu website, and on release day, they are critical.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Finding List Of Md5sums Took Longer?

Mar 22, 2010

Why is it always such a PITA to find a list of md5sums for the various versions of Ubuntu. I've just downloaded 9.10 from [URL], but it took me longer to track down the md5sums than it did to download 690Mb on a cable connection. A simple link on each of the many pages from which you can download Ubuntu is surely not too much to ask. And it's not a new problem. I remember having the same problem going back to at least 8.04, if not earlier. For those others looking for the link, here is one [URL].

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Alternate I386 Files Have Bad MD5SUMs?

Apr 29, 2011

The MD5SUM file on the ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso disc is wrong. It has an incorrect checksum of 2 files and 18 that are missing or have incorrect names. I'm checking these from a Windows box but that really shouldn't matter. The two incorrect hashes are:

Code:
543f56d91223039621db4cf3b50dde37 ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
0ae389801f547ccf19bd6f63c0ab3b7d ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/i386/pxelinux.0
I'm showing an MD5 of D41D8CD98F00B204E9800998ECF8427E for both files...

These are the files which appear to be missing or misnamed (the ones I checked appear to be on the disc but are named incorrectly):

Code:
./pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu12_i386.deb
./pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu7_i386.deb

Software :: Download Some Images From A Website - Single Column Of Links To The Images?

Jul 26, 2010

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).

Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.

My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

General :: Concatenate Several Images Into A PDF File With Several Images Per Page

May 2, 2011

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:

convert *png output.pdf

The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Seem To Install Latest Release Over 5.04

Feb 26, 2010

I downloaded the latest release, burned a disk and successfully booted. When it comes time to choose a partition I don't have the option of replacing the old release. I can install in parallel leaving both but can't use the whole disk. Interestingly enough I CAN replace the windows installation. Of course I already have Grub installed but I don't see how this would affect installing. I read the article here [URL] and it seems I may have missed a step. However it's implied I will lose the current Grub installation. Is that the case?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Download Release Notes

Jun 7, 2010

I was still using Ubuntu 9.04, and I decided to upgrade up to 10.04. Upgrading to Karmic was no problem but then I tried to upgrade to Lucid and I always get the message "Can't download release notes", I also cannot upgrade from the command line (is 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' discontinued?). I've tried several mirrors during the last couple of days but still I can't get it to work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Want To Use 4.10 Warty Warthog Release?

Mar 4, 2011

I've noticed that Ubuntu seems to be getting bloated and complicated, especially with this crappy 11.04 release that ruins it totally. Anyway, I have an old computer and would like to get the most out of it. I am running 10.10 right now, and would like to downgrade to Warty Warthog, which I used a few years ago, and seemed fast. It's older, so it can be lighter on the resources than 10.10 I suppose. Anyway, I cant find it anywhere. Also, I'll need installation instructions since it is probably pretty heard to install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Finding Packages That Are Not On An LTS Point Release CD?

Mar 17, 2010

A while ago I posted this thread, with no responses:[URL].. I deploy into an environment that for "security" reasons cannot be kept up to date with wherever the ubuntu archive is up to (with awareness that this is avoiding security updates...). It is a sealed system not connected to the internet. I'm working with the 8.04.1 LTS, and my customer is in an 'if it ain't broke don't change it' frame of mind w.r.t. moving to 8.04.4. My main problem comes in two variations: 1. Some packages my runtime system depends on are not distributed on the 8.04.1 DVD, but were available in the full ubuntu archive at the time of the point release (and still are, in an up-to-date form). My concern is that if I take the 8.04.4-ish version of a package it will not work correctly with an otherwise 8.04.1 system. In general I am expecting that it *might*, and the versioned dependencies it has on other packages will be loose enough. 2. Some packages my build system (which produces what I put onto the runtime system) depend on are also not on the DVD. So almost a repeat of 1 above, except that I am generally running afoul of strictly-versioned dependencies (the -dev version of a lib package depends on the matching lib package having exactly the same version). If the non-dev lib package is on the DVD, but is not the same version as the -dev package I have from an archive mirror taken just before the 8.04.1 release, I believe I'm screwed?

So my two questions are: a. Is there such a thing as a copy of the full ubuntu archive taken at the exact time the 8.04.1 LTS was released? I think that would solve most of my problems.

I installed the RC of Lucid on an old AMD X2 5600 w/4GB DDR2 ram, and put it in the other room and installed LAMP on it to use as a local development server. It works beautifully over the network.

1. There will be an upgrade option to go from RC to final release, right?

2. When upgrading, will this kill my LAMP install? I really don't wanna go from scratch now that I have it all up and running with a load of CMS systems installed for test environments
