Ubuntu :: Installer (Wubi) In Windows Vista?
Aug 29, 2010
I have a second computer now. I succesfully installed the 'Ubuntu 10.04' 5 months ago but I had to unsintall it because apparently I got a virus when in a google search I clicked one video of cryptozoology (won't tell) and the screen went black or something. For the first time that pc frozen 3-4 times, so I was afraid I got a virus. Now I want to install the Ubuntu again but the Wubi windows keeps asking me for my password to continue.Okay, the problem is that I am using the correct pasword but still is asking me to use the correct one.

I have installed ubuntu 11.04 using wubi with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The operating system works fine. Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.

I backed up all my Wubi-files + the boot.ini etc. I reinstalled my Windows OS, then put my Wubi-files on a new partition D: . Put the wubildr.mdr file + wubildr in the C: dir. Changed the boot.ini to C:wubildr.mdr = "Ubuntu" . But when I select Ubuntu in the boot manager I get an error message (Couldn't load Windows, ntoskrnl corrupt - or something). What do I do wrong? Can't I just install a new Wubi using the installer and then replace the disk-file by the old one?

I ran the Wubi installer for Kubuntu 9.10 from XP on my old IBM Thinkpad T30. After install the system rebooted (complete with grub menu) and the KDE desktop launch successfully, however the task bar and menus are fuzzy, distorted and unreadable when I click them. Do I just need to change my display resolution? How do I do this without being able to see a menu?

Downloaded the Wubi exe today to install 10.10 on a new netbook. But at launch it reads, "You are about to install Ubuntu 10.04". So I guess wubi has not been updated yet for the new release?

Argh all that downloading for nothing, it fails when it is around 98% finished with install! Giving a permission denied error, yet that makes no sense because I am running as Administrator account in Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit on amd64).
BTW I followed the recommended fix on the WubiGuide and it doesn't work.
It says to copy the ISO file (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso) into the same directory as the wubi.exe installer file. I did that and it still goes through the whole long process of downloading the ISO file and gives the same error at the end

Im currently a Windows Vista user, and would like to get test some linux distributions - Ubuntu is one of them, Ubuntu Studio is another. Iinstalling muliple OS's becomes overly complicated on my old vista machine. Therefore:
Can I simply turn a regular dualboot into a "fake" triple boot by adding wubi to Vista? Should wubi be installed before the dual boot distro or vice versa? Does it make any difference what the "real" dual boot distribution is? I would like to test Ubuntu Studio (not included in wubi) and OpenSUSE. Is either of them better to test first, because they do a better job in easily replacing an old distribution in a dualboot etc.?

I've installed wubi on my D: partition of a vista os. Vista is installed on the C: I can see the vista partition if I mount it but can only see the wubi 10.04 system files on the data partition (D: ). No option to mount it either. Also curious to know if its possible to automatically mount the c: on startup.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.
1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive.
2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu.
3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,
Partition 1 NTFS (Primary) ~50GB
Partition 2 NTFS (Primary) ~100GB
Partition 3 EXT4 (Extended)
Root EXT4 (Logical) ~20GB
Swap Linux-swap ~2GB
Home EXT4 (Logical) ~129GB
4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine.
5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).
-Everything was fine until now -
6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message.
7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.
Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

"no need to burn a CD. Just run the installer, enter a password for the new account, and click "Install", go grab a coffee, and when you are back, Ubuntu will be ready for you." that's what it says on the wubi page. I did exactly that, then it asks to reboot which I did, and still no ubuntu. All I have is 3 folders, one icon and one application.
disks
install
winboot
ubuntu (just an icon, nothing happens when I click on it, just an image pops up) and uninstall-wubi.

When I download and run wubi.exe, I get an error message that I can't dismiss that reads: Windows - No Disk There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive .(sic) I've tried downloading the appropriate .iso and putting it in the same directory as wubi

I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

I am preparing to install Ubuntu server to run the server I am building. Both the server and Ubuntu are new to me. In preparation to this I installed Wubi on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed nicely and works smoothly. Unfortunately when I went back into W7 it has crashed 5 times in a row. Sometimes I got 5 minutes into the running of windows. The last time it crashed before I could even log in. I am unable to determine what is going on as i can't get around in my Windows for very long. Fortunately the Ubuntu side of my computer is still working well.
My W7 install is on a smaller partition (80GB). Would the Wubi installed on this same partition and maybe crowding the W7 install? Should I create another partition to install the Wubi onto or just install a Ubuntu on a separate partition? How should i go about troubleshooting this?
