In System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers I've enabled the 'Broadcom STA wireless driver' and its noted as 'This driver is activated and currently in use.' Changes I made

- I've activated the Nvidia driver.
- I've installed Boxee (media center)
- I'm using CPU frequency scalers for both my cores.
- I've updated my system and am using maverick-security, -updates and -proposed.
- I've installed b43-fwcutter
- I've installed firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

Other than those adjustments the system is completely fresh. When I suspend or hibernate and activate my laptop again it only shows a backlight-lit black screen and does not continue restoring. Other than the occasional flash my cpu 'business' indicator led does nothing. BUT The wireless led is now on. I've tried the Broadcom B43 driver as you could've guessed from the changes I made, no result. I had to use the 'lpphy' installer(for BCM4312 (with Low-Power aka LP-PHY)), the 'legacy' and normal version both gave an error upon executing the post installation script.

Ubuntu Installation :: Why Is Natty Minimal Install So Much Bigger Than On Maverick?

May 25, 2011

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install. Why do I need those 205 packages? Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

I have been desperately trying to get my Broadcom BCM4312 wireless card to work and after searching about 100 sites and threads I still can't get it going Here are some of the problems Ive been having(I am running Ubuntu 8.04 by the way):

1. Tried installing "Broadcom STA Wireless Driver" under System->Administration->hardware drivers but after install it didn't show any signs of working.

2. I tried getting the Linux driver off the website [URL]... and followed the instructions in the readme to the letter, yet when i am asked to type in one of the final commands: # sudo insmod wl.ko

I get the output: # error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 File exists I have also looked at this website where a guy posts the same problem but no one posted anything back: [URL]...

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Does Not Work (Broadcom BCM4312)

Jul 28, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu on 2 computers, and I'm new to it. However I'm not new to computers. The problem I'm currently running into on one of the computers is that the wireless will not detect any connections, despite there being many. The computer is a HP Compaq v6203AU using the wireless card Broadcom BCM4312 [14e4:4312]. I've went through dozens of walkthroughs, encountering errors in every single one of them, I've spent 8 hours on this one problem and extremely frustrated. It seem to be a problem with the driver that comes as default, and I'm lost at what to do.

The terminal command "lspci -nn | grep 14e4" returns the following:
03:00.0 Network Controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312]

ifconfig returns the following:

The computer has no internet access as there is nowhere to connect except through wireless.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom BCM4312, Desperation Setting In?

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom BCM4312 - 4315 - Activated But No Signal

Jun 16, 2010

I recently bought a Lenovo laptop which comes with a wireless card called Broadcom BCM4312 but in dmesg it says "bcm4315 hybrid wireless controller".

Jockey says the driver is installed, activated and in use. However I don't get any signal (I even moved the laptop to the same room the wireless router is).

I run iwevent and nothing appeared.

I run Kubuntu 10.04, fresh install from a USB stick, latest updates. I replaced knetworkmanager with the network-manager-gnome. network-manager-gnome works fine and I can connect to wired connection with no problem.

Network-manager-gnome says that the wireless is disconnected. What can be done to make the wireless work?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mobile Broadband With BCM4312 Integrated Card

Jul 5, 2010

Network Card: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01
Ubuntu: 10.04 Netbook Remix
CPU: 32Bit

Wired and Wireless Networks work perfectly the only issue is the Mobile Broadband. When I try to setup my Mobile Broadband connection manualy using the Network Connections Manager the device drop-down is grayed out and it doesn't seem like my network card is being recognized as a Mobile Broadband Card. When I had Windows 7 installed and started ubuntu over a USB Drive the connection worked great. I've followed the steps at [URL] too and it all checked out.

I found another idea in a thread here and I've tried that too:
I added the following line to my /etc/modules:
echo b43 | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
I've also tried using the Broadcom STA drivers that ubuntu offers but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

After my computer restarted my wireless no longer showed up. By this I mean that wireless network no longer even showed up as an option when I left clicked then connections. However, I did not lose the wireless profile under network connections. So I went to system and noticed that the Broadcom STA driver was no longer active. Ubuntu Networking :: Network Disabled On Acer Aspire With BCM4312 802.11 B/g (Broadcom)

Aug 7, 2010

I'm running Kubuntu and Windows on the same machine but when I swap over to Kubuntu I can't get the wireless to work. The lshw command returns network disabled but the machine can see that there is a wlan0 connection.

I've been trying to install the broadcom Linux driver from their site but the instructions fall apart at step 3: cd bnx...version/ ( directory just created by tar). I'm guessing this is because I don't have a Live CD (after almost a week of trying to burn a disc I just broke down and got Wubi) but that doesn't change the fact I have no idea what to do now or if this will even work.

If it makes any difference, the wired connection will also occasionally die mysteriously after about 30-60 minutes of use and refuse to re-activate but work fine when I switch over to Windows or just plug it into the router.

Ubuntu Networking :: Enable Wireless Grayed Out After Resume From Suspect With BCM4312

Fedora Networking :: BCM4312 Not Working Under F11 With Fresh Install

Jun 12, 2009

Just tried new Fedora 11 yesterday, did a fresh install with ext3 /boot and ext4 file system, booting looks great, but wireless doesn't work. I have tried using broadcom-wl, dnmouse script, dnmouse broadcom f11 rpm, fwcutter but not ndiswrapper

Code:
# rpm -qa | grep broadcom
broadcom-wl-5.10.79.10-2.fc11.noarch

Code:
# lspci -nn
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)

Code:
# lspci -vvv | grep 4312
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company BCM4312 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller
ifconfig only shows eth0, lo and pan0 interfaces, and got nothing from iwconfig...

Code:
# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
pan0 no wireless extensions.

Even tried to blacklist b43 after installing broadcom-wl driver, but no luck. Broadcom-wl works fine with Fedora 10 on my laptop, is it possibly because of the new ext4 file system? Should I try ndiswrapper or install Fedora 10 again and do a preupgrade? I also use fedora at work.

Fedora Networking :: Cannot Get BCM4312 Wireless Card Working

Apr 9, 2010

I recently purchased an Acer eMachines E525 laptop, and currently have it dual booting Windows 7 and Fedora 12 x86_64 with the 2.6.31.5-127 kernel. I've been completely unable to get the wireless card working in Fedora (it works fine in windows).

lspci lists the following about the wireless card:
Code:
Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
so I assume it's a BCM4312.

So far I have tried downloading the driver from [URL] and then trying to install it according to the accompanying readme file: [URL]. However, when I try to make the driver, I get the following message:

Code:
KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32.10-90.fc12.x86_64/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
The Readme says that if I get this kind of error, I need to install the "kernel-devel" package, but I have this installed and it still returns the same error.

I have also tried following the fw-cutter instructions for fedora from [URL], but it still doesn't work. I realise there's the option of using ndiswrapper, but I gave that a shot with Fedora 11 on the same machine and had no luck, and I'd really like to see whether any of the other options work before going down that route.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom BCM4312 Dell Studio - Built In Wireless Card - 'disabled' And No Longer Works

Jun 10, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).

All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.

The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g

I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?

The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Adapter Not Showing Up Minimal Install

I was able to get it working in a regular Ubuntu installation, but it doesn't seem to pick it up in this install. Does anyone have any tips/advice? I went with the minimal install because I wanted to see how lightweight I can get the OS.

Ubuntu Networking :: Maverick Networking Split Personality?

Nov 28, 2010

So, I use Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Dell laptop as the router for the house. It shares its Vodacom 3G with the rest of us, via the network port of the laptop. This works fine. We can all surf to our hearts' content.I can also VNC into the desktop of the router machine if I ever need to accomplish X, Y or Z on it, which is handy. However, I cannot for the life of me SSH in, or connect to the MySQL server that also lives on that machine. This is a pain. What I want to do is set up a database on a remote server, and then tunnel in via SSH. I'm trying to test that configuration using local machines on my network. My desktop machine happens to be XP, and I'm using Putty to try to initiate the SSH connection, but I keep getting a message saying NETWORK ERROR: CONNECTION REFUSED.
