We've just installed debian xfce lxde....after all this time to get it....when we boot up to the login screen it keeps saying wrong uder name or password
View 7 RepliesI just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password
I've recently installed a new graphic card after my old one started to go belly-up and it works nicely in X with twinview. The card have one VGA, one DVI and one HDMI. I have the monitor connected to the VGA and my projector connected to the DVI. However, when I boot the monitor (VGA) don't receive a signal. It is dead until X comes up (and when X comes up it does exactly what I want, it uses the VGA monitor as the main screen).
I had this setup on my old card to and it worked fine. Grub and boot console showed on both screens and I never had to tweak anything to make it do this.
how to enable the VGA outlet, either have boot enabled or only the VGA enabled (either way is fine by me but I really want to see Grub and the boot console on startup).
Seems like a nasty bug in F13.after typing in wrong password, a 2nd correct attempt on gdm (or kdm) leads to a dark screen with a dash cursor blinking on the upper left - have to turn machine off. Then on next login, memory seems to race until properly shut down.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been working my butt off all day now trying to get the nvidia drivers installed and then (the hard part) get dual screen to work properly with them installed. Finally I've gotten to the point where both of my screens are working perfect but now the login screen is on the second monitor instead of the first monitor for some reason I do not know.

one of them is a TV with an HDMI input. The login screen shows up on the tv, so if someone is watching a movie, I have to pause it to switch inputs and login. Other than that, everything is fine. How do I get the login screen to show up on the main monitor?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.
Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.
How can I boot Debian 6 directly into the desktop without bringing up the login screen or login password?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).
In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)
Ive been using it for a few days and it kept reminding me to update some files. (about 200mb worth) after it finished installing i rebooted but it won't show me a login screen. it only shows me a commmand line. it allows to 'exit' and then it boots windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHaving installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

I had Kubuntu 10.04 installed, I screwed up a bunch of stuff in it and it would hang after the login screen. I reinstalled Kubuntu 10.10 (formatted the partition with Kubuntu on it) but I kept my /home partition in tact. NOw, when I log in, i starts to load, and then KICKS ME OUT, back into the log in screen. The user does exist, I can access the user from the console, but when I try to get into Kubuntu, it kicks me back out to login. What on earth is going on? I've tried failsafe mode as well as regular login. neither works.

I have configured the displays (Settings > Displays) to turn off the laptop display and set the external display as primary. However, this setting only takes effect after login. Thus, I am unable to see the login screen greeter on my external display because I close the laptop lid, so I am logging in blindly to a gray login screen background.
he issue I am facing is that when I start the laptop with an external display connected, the greeter only appears on the laptop display. The gray login screen background image spans both laptop and external displays and my mouse pointer appears on both displays, so I know both displays are detected and configured as dual displays. But, I am guessing, the laptop display is set as primary while the external as secondary.
I would like to know if there is a way to dynamically switch the greeter between the two displays, regardless of which one is set as primary and secondary. Or, is there a way to configure the system such that if there is an external display connected via HDMI, then it is set as primary, and if no external display is connected, then the laptop display is set as primary?
I have searched all over the net and this forum to no avail. I read a post which required copying the user's ~/.config/monitors.xml file over to /var/lib/gdm/.config/ but this caused my laptop monitor to be turned off at login even when there was no external display connected.
Hardware: Acer Aspire 8730G, Core 2 Duo T9900, 8GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT.
Software: Debian 8.4 Jessie, Gnome 3.14.1, Gallium 0.4 on NV96 (I am assuming this is the Nouveau driver)

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850

Got it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed a fresh Debian amd64 DVD version on my small HP Compaq 6537s / AMD Athlon X2 / 64. Everything went fine, I rebooted, the graphical login screen appeared, so I thought I will be able at last to run Debian on a computer ...
But then after login, the login Window disappeared, the "Debian" logo too, and... that's all folks! A nice blank screen. But the mouse is still perfectly drawn, so it's kind of weird.

If I go to CTRL-ALT-F1, i login as root and I do a "/etc/init.d/gdm restart", I have the login screen back and this is once again the same scenario: login => ok => blank screen with mouse properly drawn and the Debian background color still there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a kickstart script that attempts to create user "joeblow" with an encrypted password. The user is created okay, but the password does not seem to "take". After installation is complete, and the system is rebooted, this is the relevant portion of /etc/passwd:

Where there are two exclamation points, I would expect the encrypted password (as is the case for the root user, which is also created in the kickstart file).

After the install is complete, I reboot and attempt to log in as "joeblow", but no dice. If I log in as root, and manually put the above encrypted password into /etc/shadow for jowblow, I can then log in as joeblow.

I uninstalled the email portion of Ubuntu and rebooted the make sure that everything was good. Ubuntu came back to the login splash screen-I selected my login and entered my Correct password-Ubuntu splashed up screen writting (Unable to read as its to quick) and Ubuntu then returns to the login screen. Incidently when I enter an incorrect password Ubuntu tells me that it is incorrect but with my correct password it just returns to the login splash screen.

Is there a way to get the login screen to disable the saved users? Or a way to make the login screen ask for username and password?
I may be a beginner to Ubuntu 10.10, but I'm fairly certain that this is weird: I have had no trouble logging into my Ubuntu 10.10 netbook until this morning. Now I am unable to get past the login screen. It says that there is an Authentication Failure, which is bogus. Not only should the password work, but it does in the Terminal. I am able to login to the terminal and gain root access.
I can even change my unix password, but no matter what I try I can't get to my desktop. I did run into a major issue with a frozen program. Rather than reboot, I tried to close it using the kill command. What ended up happening was that all that remained was my wallpaper, probably a bad move on my part, but I'm a rookie. I think I killed all running applications. This happened last night... so probably related.
