Debian Installation :: Prevent Grub From Loading Into MBR?

I want to use my BootIt NG boot menu. How would I go about installing Debian 5.0.3 and prevent Grub from loading into MBR? I don't remember being asked by the installer where to put Grub. Unlike Fedora where you can choose MBR or boot section of the target partition. Debian 5.0.3 -

Debian :: Grub Load Error "Grub Loading Stage1.5. Grub Loading, Please Wait... Error 15"

May 23, 2010

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.

I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

Debian :: Prevent Grub-pc From Linking To Other OSs?

Oct 25, 2010

I want to prevent grub-pc from automatically creating links to other operating systems on my laptop. Whenever there is a kernel update, grub.cfg ends with links pointing at my Windows 7 installation - I want to get rid of those links. At the moment I am doing that by manually editing the grub.cfg file and it has always worked that way. I tried to force grub-pc to avoid creating links to Windows by renaming the relevant scripts in /etc/grub.d edbarx@edbarx-pc2:/etc/grub.d$ ls 00_header  05_debian_theme  10_linux  20_linux_xen  _30_os-prober  _30_otheros  40_custom  41_custom  README As you can see I added an underscore to the files that I don't want to be executed.

I think this can be solved by changing the file permissions of the unwanted scripts making them impossible to execute.

edbarx@edbarx-pc2:/etc/grub.d$ ls -l
total 52
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6433 Aug  7 18:10 00_header
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1474 Jul 16 18:46 05_debian_theme

Software :: Prevent Kdeinit4 - 100% CPU Loading?

May 20, 2011

There are thousands of threads in the Internet about kdeinit4 problem and I searched them for a solution but all I got is: it's a bug, accept it. There is this solution here and I added

Code:
[DirWatch]
PollInterval=60000
as plamaiziere said, but this changed nothing.

So kdeinit4 loads my CPU 100%. Maybe someone has figured out how to prevent this from happening? I use IceWM but have KDE fully installed because I use a lot of apps from KDE group.

What would be causing this error and how would I go about fixing it?

CentOS 5 :: Prevent Device-mapper From Loading In Installer

Mar 5, 2009

I am trying to prevent the dm_mod and friends from loading during install.I am installing by PXE boot with NFS and kickstart files over http. This works fine for other machines.Ok, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with 8gig ram, PERC 6/i raid controller. The raid has 8 1TB drives in it, so the total size of the device is >2TB.There is also an SATA drive, which is NOT on the raid controller.

The problem is, I want to install CentOS on the SATA drive. The SATA drive comes up as a device-mapper drive, with a big crazy device name. This is ok, but the problem is, when the system goes to boot, it just says 'missing operating system'.I can't boot from the raid because it is large enough to require a GPT partition, and CentOS says it can't boot from a GPT partition. The SATA drive would work FINE if I could just prevent the damn device mapper from loading, so that I could install on the SATA drive in ordinary SATA mode.

I have tried re-squashing the stage2.img with /etc/modprobe.conf with alias dm_mod off and such, no luck.I also tried adding an /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, that did not work either.I also tried putting blacklist= dm_mod in the kickstart file, but that seems to be a fedora-only option and it kills my install. any ideas on preventing the dm_mod et. al. from loading at install time??

Fedora Installation :: 13 After Install Grub Not Loading?

I am trying to install fedora on my semi aging PC. It installed fine and prompted me to reboot. So I did, but then as soon as it tries to load the grub menu, it gives me the following error: no such device: 2cb414b7-7620-48a9-93af-f03aec3495e4How do I restore grub and make it work? Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. I recently had Ubuntu 10.04 which did not have grub (at least it is not shown during the boot) and suited me more than fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Loading Error When Install 9.10?

Jan 8, 2010

I went through the procedure to install Ubuntu 9.10 alongside Windows XP. The installation completed without complaint. But when I reboot the PC I get the error message "Grub loading error: no such partition...". and the keyboard is dead. I am using a Sony vaio PCG-FR215H laptop on which I have fitted new HDD and CD-drive. I carried out the installation by first booting up a live version of Ubuntu on a USB thumb drive and then clicking on the 'install Ubuntu' icon on the Live Ubuntu desktop. (I coudn't use a Live CD to install as this fails for some reason). I regained use of Windows XP on the PC by booting with a Windows 95 boot floppy and typing "fdisk /mbr". So, does anyone know what might have cased this grub error? Also, are there ways to try and fix the problem manually. I.e. can I get a copy of good versions of the files that are likely corrupted and then replace the stuff that I will have written over when I did the "fdisk /mbr"?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot To Past 'GRUB Loading'?

Jan 30, 2010

I've just bought a new laptop (with no installed OS) and have (excitedly) burned a live cd for Karmic Koala 64bit: several people on the laptop manufacturer forums have got working with this particular laptop.

The live session works fine but when I install and then reboot I get 'GRUB Loading' with a flashing underscore and nothing else happens. I've found this thread and this bug report and have tried reinstalling GRUB to no avail.

I also have a live cd for 9.04 which I've tried to install and get a the same problem only now the message is 'GRUB Loading stage1.5' So I don't think it's a problem with the version of GRUB as described in the bug report thread.

I read something else that said it could be a problem with the mbr being in some way geared towards Windows but I'm not sure. I tried following those instructions but nothing happened and then I just got the same error again.

Any help would be greatly received since obviously I'm pretty desperate to get my spangly (and expensive) new machine to work. Edit: I also have a thread at the manufacturers' forums. But we're at a loss there too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual-Boot - Grub Not Loading

Aug 1, 2011

I have been using Ubuntu for a while now on a netbook and even installed it on another pc, but I never tried dual-booting before... I just recently built a pc (my first custom build), and I'm having major difficulties getting a dual-boot running with Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install these on one hdd. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or not, but the bios doesn't seem to like grub... I installed Win 7 first, and before installing Ubuntu on a separate partition, Win 7 would boot up fine. (Although, sometimes the bios would ignore my key presses for entering the bios menu or the boot-menu... When I only had Windows installed.)

When I turn on the pc, I mostly get a blinking cursor, with no messages at all. Nothing would boot at all, grub doesn't seem to load, and no OS would load by default. This would even happen sometimes after I set CD-ROM as the first item on the boot order list, trying to boot from the Ubuntu liveCD since there was no way for me to reach either of my installs on my HDD. I tried several suggestions I found online, and nothing seems to help. I even tried both grub 1.99 and grub 0.97, but still not much luck, (Although, grub legacy seems to load slightly more often...) I don't really want to have to resort to using Ubuntu through a VM, but it looks like this is the only option left... Is there some way I can dual boot with something other than grub?

Here's something I noticed after trying Ubuntu a few times. I'm not sure how relevant this is to my issue but, at times, on booting from a liveCD, I see several lines appearing that say something like "over-current change on port 2" should I be worried about this? Is something wrong with my mobo or psu? Another thing and this was before installing Ubuntu, when I boot up the pc, my keyboard is sometimes disabled until it's re-plugged in to a usb port. Maybe this has something to do with over-current charge? I'm just trying to figure out if anything needs to be replaced... I got sick of having to replugin the keyboard since I was constantly restarting the pc, so I started using a less fancy keyboard and it seems to be recognized most of the time (sometimes the bios would still ignore my boot-menu key press attempts).

Ubuntu Installation :: (initramfs) Prompt After Alternate CD 9.10 With RAID - Grub Loading: Biosdisk Read Error

Jan 13, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a nvidia board which, based on the forums I have perused, is a FAKERaid chipset. Originally I tried to install according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto to no avail. I gave up and am resorting to breaking down my raid setup (thus losing my Windows XP installation) and using Linux's software raid (which seems to be the recommended method) with the Alternate CD install.

I went in to the bios and completely disabled my board's RAID function. I then followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/SoftwareRAID , except it popped up with a window advising me "one or more serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices?" which that page didn't mention. I believe I selected "Yes". Setting up the partitions I made (from beginning of disk to end of disk) a RAID1 200MB /boot partition, a RAID0 / partition (90GB?), free space not set up in RAID (approx 20GB for each SATA drive to later install Windows on [if that's even possible]) & then the SWAP partition 2GB at the end of one of the disks (is it OK that this one wasn't in RAID?).

The installation completed, as far as I can tell, without a hitch. Except also of note: my network card doesn't work in the installer (gives an error message about unable to configure dhcp) so i'm not connected to the internet. Then I restart and the following appears: grub loading: error: biosdisk read error. Followed by what appears to be the Ubuntu loading splash (just a small white shape in the middle of the screen), and then:

to be clear the BIOS simply replies "loading grub" takes ten minutes and then crashes.

has anyone ever had trouble with grub crashing systems? this problem seems odd since is did boot with this two years ago and i still have that image.
