Ubuntu Installation :: Roms "cd/dvd" Stop Read'n After Installation

Jul 26, 2010

I donate my time for an organization that rebuilds old discarded PC's from either person upgrading or replace due to PC failure and business for same reason. At one time we used to load Windows XP as the OS. Due to licensing problems we have started loading Ubuntu 10 as the OS. We have noticed an increasing amount of rom's that after installing Ubuntu 10 the rom's stop reading installation disc, data and music disc. We never experienced this problem when we installed Win XP. We have for a couple of PC's reinstalled XP over Unbuntu to see if rom's are bad,and after installation roms played all types of disc. My question is why or what is causing such an increasing amount of roms "cd/dvd" to stop working after installation of Ubuntu and what can we do to correct this problem? We realize there are some that were bad and didn't work even under XP installation that didn't work even from the beginning of installation those we replaced then stopped working after Ubuntu installation.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Stop Drive And Read Only File System

Oct 19, 2010

Every time when I right click the USB drive icon and select "Safely remove drive" I always get this error message

FAILED: No such file or directory
even though the icon does disappear from the desk top. I have been ignoring it since the USB drive seems working fine. Now I have a more serious problem. When I tried to copy files onto the USB drive it says "read only file system" and doesn't let me. I tried unplug and plug the USB key but that doesn't help.

Ubuntu Installation :: OpenLDAP Slapd / Can't Stop The Service With Service Slapd Stop?

Oct 20, 2010

I am trying to setup LDAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 and am sticking to the old /etc/ldap/slapd.conf file configuration.

I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues

After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:

1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop

Code:
## Service stop returns 0, maybe because start-stop-daemon is not giving error
#service slapd stop
Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.
# echo $?
0

Will switching to BDB database resolve this ?Also can't I slapcat at non-root user ??

Ubuntu Installation :: HDD Seems To Stop Working After Some Time

Sep 29, 2010

I recently bought a Shuttle XS-35 Mini-Barebone-PC and filled it with a 2GB Corsair RAM and a 1 TB WD Scorpion Blue Drive. After assembling all the parts I simply wanted to install Ubuntu but it simply doesn't work. However then I had the idea it would be good to kinda get the drive to a completely clean state and used the tools to safely wipe the whole HDD (by writing zeros everywhere as the tool tells me). The tool ran good for around 30 minutes but suddenly the write speed showing in the console window would go down to 0B/s (meaning basically nothing at all I suppose). I tried it 2 more times and it always came to a halt at the 10-20GB mark.

So this lead me to belief that that is also the problem while installing, that my drive doesn't want to wark anymore but rather just sleep a bit. What could be the problem? Is it a hardware error? Is there some linux system setting that could whip my HDD whenever it gets lazy? Did I do something else wrong?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mouse And Keyboard Stop Working With 9.10 AMD 64 Bit?

Jan 11, 2010

System was running fine under 8.04 but decided to update. The live CD works fine but after install, the Mouse and Keyboard stop working under 9.10. Even the keyboard power button is off. Disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard or the mouse does not . AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ PS/2 Keyboard and PS/2 mouse

Everything else seems OK but how would I know without the keyboard or mouse. The keyboard turns off right before the first Ubuntu screen. The Numlock will go off and then nothing. Tried to run dpkg - fix broken packages after booting to repair. All I get is fail to fetch http: (whatever )Could not resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com. Update: Alt-F3 ... then Booting to terminal mode does not disable the keyboard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Stop Promoting U9.10 It Doesn't Work / Fix It?

Feb 24, 2010

Every time I've tried to install 9.10, it will not run. I get "Grub - " and it just hangs there. I shouldn't have to deal with that. Why can't I just have a happy install like usual? 9.10 / Grub2 is not stable and it needs fixing. Grub2 sucks. It's in beta and no-one tells you that unless you do some looking. I've tried to fix it, can't. Linux really sucks for me right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade - MySQL 5.1 Does Not Want To Start Or Stop

Apr 30, 2010

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start

Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Stop Gnome-system-monitor?

Sep 26, 2010

since a few days (maybe one week and after an automatic upgrade), I could see a strange behavior of gnome-system-monitor. After a boot, everything is normal. But if I log-out, and then log-in again, the problem begins. Impossible to close the gnome-system-monitor window (by clicking on the window upper-right close button). I have to terminate the process. And this process takes about 50% of CPU. In the same time, a dbus-deamon process takes the other 50%. When I terminate gnome-system-monitor process, the CPU use drops down to 6%.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 Won't Read DVD's?

Feb 28, 2010

I recently picked up an HP 8510p laptop, and installed 9.04. Generally, the machine works well, but today I tried to install the Ultimate Edition, and found that the machine won't read DVD's. It reads and boots CD's just fine; that's how I installed Jaunty. When I open the fstab file, I notice at the bottom:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'vol_id --uuid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

[Code]....

I notice a "cdrom0" at the bottom. I also notice that the /cdrom folder is empty.

Sysinfo id's the drive as a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-861H. Do I need another driver? Where do I find one, and how do I install it?

This is a similar issue to:

Ubuntu Installation :: Controller Receiver Stop Working Randomly

Nov 11, 2010

I installed Ubuntu as well but was still using the windows loader. I eventually installed Ubuntu Studio when I got another HDD (which is where I installed it). Don't ask me how I did it. As of now no loader automatically pops up. It acts as if there is nothing to boot from. However I can hit f12 and chose which HDD to boot to. On one it comes up with the Windows loader w/ Vista and Ubuntu. I can chose Vista and it works just fine. However if I chose Ubuntu it starts going a lil nuts and restarts. If I chose the other HDD it boots up Grub w/ options of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Studio. Studio works (which I'm currently on) and pretty much the same thing happens as before when I chose Ubuntu. So if the 2 OS's that I need work (Only really use windows for games) then what is the problem? I know its a little bit annoying trying to remember to hit f12 and having to chose your OS again after that (and of course the extremely annoying vista startup times). Some other things in both Studio and Vista don't want to work like they should. This is about the only thing left that I could think of that may have something to do with it. My wireless card+an old wireless card I found won't work w/ either.

Yet they both work on other computers running Vista and/or Ubuntu (not studio). I seem to always keep having display problems on both as well (dual monitors and graphics both). Even on studio I have to restart it sometimes to even get it to let me go fix it. My wireless controller receiver (for games) will stop working randomly and need to be unplugged and plugged back in. I also have problems with Studio recognizing SD cards and DVD/CD's. I am not sure much of anything can be done aside from wipe and fresh install on both. Bad thing is I don't have my other computer with me and can't afford to buy a 1TB HDD right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Read Most Discs?

Dec 9, 2010

I have several old poweredge 2450 servers I bought recently, used. I have made several Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.04.4 server cds. They all hang on the packages.gz file trying to install. I used the check disc function on the 2450s and it can't read the file, it thinks it is corrupt, though it works fine on a more modern computer.have tried several similar computers. I have burned to CD-R and CD-RW. I have burned at 8x (slowest on my drive).I have checked the MD5. I just don't understand why these computers won't read this disc properly. Or several other discs, like SMS server or tiny core. Won't read them either. Oh, but it reads Ubuntu 10.10 server just fine, installs ok, well slowly, but it works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Stop Hoarding Everything And Share Boot Screen With Windows Xp?

Mar 18, 2010

I installed windows xp on my tobisha satellite l305, then installed ubuntu 9.10..my friend's laptop had vista and was SOOO bogged down from viruses, so he wanted to try ubuntu. We installed ubuntu, leaving the other half of his hard drive unallocated.Afterwards we installed xp, on the unallocated space, but it wouldn't let me dual boot... it would boot directly into xp, however, the ubuntu partition was still there because through the file system in xp we could find it.So then run gparted on a live CD, delete the ubuntu parition, leaving it unallocated, then installed it over that unallocated space.

now, when i dual boot it shows on the grub page the option to boot to ubuntu, ubuntu (recovery) and these two memory test things that when i ran it just shows a BIOS looking screen.testing my memory. However, on the desktop i have mounted 79gb which has all the windows files in it.so how do I tell ubuntu to stop hoarding everything and share the boot screen with windows xp?

Ubuntu Installation :: Make Dell Spash Screen Stop Looping?

Why, after a successful (I thought) dual boot installation w/ a side-by-side lynx and meerkat install and XP does my system refuse to boot? Last night, after re-installing the grub (lost after the XP install) everything was working fine. I powered down and this morning tried to restart and...this. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure and reinstall apps--what can I do? And more importantly, WTF did this happen to begin with?
