Ubuntu Installation :: Stop Upgrade Manager From Trying To Distro Version?
Mar 17, 2011
Now, every time I run update manager, it tells me to run a partial upgrade. I can close the window and proceed upgrading packages, but if I let it try the partial upgrade is starts a distribution upgrade !??! I am currently running 11.04.
How can I stop update manager from trying to update my distro version?

so my update manager keeps saying I have updated everything, but it won't show the new 11.04 release. I did everything the documentation says, including change the release upgrade file so its pointed to normal distro upgrades.

I'm using 3 monitors over a pci-e 9800GT and an agp 7600GS and have no problems under Windows 7, except i can't have Ubuntu (which i really miss). I tried installing Ubuntu and pretty much every other distribution multiple times.. with no luck so far. Wubi, CD, USB.. none of them worked for me. Right before the first step in the installation, all the screens go haywire, displaying all kinds of shapes and colors and everything seems frozen.
None of this ever happened back when i only had 2 screens and i really need the 3rd one (actually thinking of a 4th since i got a slot left.. maybe for movies or stuff while i'm working). I found topics of people with similar problems, only they were reffering to whatever happens while inside ubuntu or whatever.

this is my first time actually asking for help here, so forgive me if I make any mistakes. The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).
The system is an eMachine T5226:
CPU : Intel Pentium D Processor 925 (Dual-Core)
64-bit processor with Intel EM64T Technology
(Each core operates at 3.0GHz | 2 x 2MB L2 Cache | 800MHz FSB)
Operating System : Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
Chipset : Intel 945G
[Code]...
Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
Q2. What are the differences between both?

I currently have 10.04 installed as my primary OS. I also have windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha installed. I would like to be able to play around with the 10.10 without any risk of damaging my 10.04 install. However, it seems grub2 control was transfered to 10.10. How do I return control to my original distro?

I've just attempted a distro upgrade (to 9.10) and have been left with a machine in an unbootable state.
I tried using a recovery boot through Grub and can see that the boot process hangs after outputting:
Code:
swap: waiting for UUID=$random-string$
If I ESC to get a prompt, I get:
Code:
General error mounting filesystems
I can't run dpkg-reconfigure as I get a read-only filesystem error.

I am trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 beta. I tried ALT-F2 & ``update - manager -d'' but when Upate Manager opened, it did not give me the option of upgrading to 10.04 beta.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I tried to upgrade to v10.04 ("Lucid"). After nearly 15 hours of painfully slow downloading and installing, my computer froze, just as the upgrade was almost complete. Needless to say, my Linux kernel is now wasted. what is the best way to proceed? I would like to get theOS going again, without losing any of my data or files. I also have a Windoze partition on that HD, which needs to be preserved.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.

Suffice to say I had a dual boot at work with an essential windows 7 and non-essential linux install on it, and randomly upgrading the distro made windows7 unbootable. Cue a missed days work, much embarrassment and ear bashing from those who are convinced Linux is written entirely by communists and hippies. In the end I had to re-install windows, which cut off the ability to boot to ubuntu - although I've left the existing ubuntu partitions as they were.
Although I can get away with allocating a few partitions to ubuntu, I can't really justify fiddling with the MBR based upon this experience. I need a fast boot and persistent data for doing anything further with ubuntu at work, so I'm wondering whether a safer bet would be to setup a usb stick with enough grub to boot to the existing ubuntu install? Not a full usb distribution, just enough to boot into the existing install? how this would be doneIs it really just a grub-install /dev/sdXX (where XX is the usb)?

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start
Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.

I want to upgrade from another distro to ubuntu server for a few reasons. The only problem is I have a lot of data that needs to survive. here is how my computer is setup. I've 5 drives on the computer,
A- 10gb drive for OS and swap only, no data
B,C,D,E - 4x 500 GB drives in a LVM. they make up one large drive with xfs and this volume has about 1.2 TB of data. there is nothing fancy on it, no encryption and no software raid of course the little 10gb drive can be formatted no problem, but the LVM needs to be migrated over intact.

I have been working with Ubuntu for the last 6 months. Overall, I am all behind linux and open source. However, what I cannot figure out is why [in Ubuntu] or how can an app work for a while, then stop working within the same distro? My iPod was working great with HiPO, Banshee, and Rhythmbox and now, after the latest upgrade, it's not working.

Does Ubuntu can / support update automatically like Windows Update does ?it is simply because I'd like to standardize my Ubuntu server installation across the datacenter to be exactly the same (latest) rather than having multiple minor version.Or is it possible to script / cronjob upgrade Ubuntu 10.0.4 into 10.10 using apt-get command by checking to the repo
