View 4 RepliesI have a Samsung SATA DVD writer which has several firmware updates available. I have a reason to believe the firmware it was shipped with is buggy. However, the only update i was able to find is a Windows executable. Out of curiosity I tried to run it under Wine and of course it is not able to access hardware. how to flash this drive without Windows?

USB keys still work properly and I can still manually mount CDs through the command line? Was there some tweak to the HAL rules that disabled CD/DVD automounting and is there any way to fix this?

Code: :: Replace kernel26-firmware with core/linux-firmware? [Y/n] There are so many updates by now that the list fills in a few pages in the terminal! Also, I wonder why so many Arch updates get stuck or broken compared to almost any other distro? Is it poorly designed packages? Is it a design flaw in pacman/the package format?
after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.
Is there a tutorial on how to play PS1 roms without having to install WINE?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running UNR Karmic on an EeePC 1008HA and I'm trying to move my save files for one of my N64 roms to my main desktop. The problem is, I can't find where Mupen64Plus stores these save files, and the .mupen64plus folder won't show up at all in my home folder, and even on my file system. Note #1: I am looking for the actual save files, not save states, although that would be nice. Note #2: Hidden files and folders view was turned on.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get the count of number of CD-ROMs attached with my Linux system using a bash shell script. I have decided to use the following method for it:
Code:
debian:~# cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info | grep "drive name:"
drive name: sr0 hdb
So basically I know that there are two CD-ROMs attached to the system. Now there can be three also like this:
Code:
debian:~# cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info | grep "drive name:"
drive name: sr0 sr1 hdb
All I want to do is in my shell script to get the count of the devices in a variable using the above command.
i just installed 10.04 and everything works fine except that it does not recognize my external cd/dvd rom and my usb flash drives, I already found some threads related to this and they that talk about going to config editor and activating these options: media_auto_run and automount_open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI donate my time for an organization that rebuilds old discarded PC's from either person upgrading or replace due to PC failure and business for same reason. At one time we used to load Windows XP as the OS. Due to licensing problems we have started loading Ubuntu 10 as the OS. We have noticed an increasing amount of rom's that after installing Ubuntu 10 the rom's stop reading installation disc, data and music disc. We never experienced this problem when we installed Win XP. We have for a couple of PC's reinstalled XP over Unbuntu to see if rom's are bad,and after installation roms played all types of disc. My question is why or what is causing such an increasing amount of roms "cd/dvd" to stop working after installation of Ubuntu and what can we do to correct this problem? We realize there are some that were bad and didn't work even under XP installation that didn't work even from the beginning of installation those we replaced then stopped working after Ubuntu installation.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwas trying to get rid of the ubuntu menu and try to change how the desktop looks. It's hard to explain but it was first the desktop you get when you first start up ubuntu on NetbookThen I somehow turned in into a desktop esque menu. With all the icons and stuff. Today my battery accidentally fell out as I moved it around and when I restarted my computer all went fine until the screen started flashing. On the upper right hand corner, was a transparent square with 2 arrows when it flashes. It still showed that I connected to my wireless and etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI switched to Jaunty as I was tired of the constant & multiple bugs that I experienced with 9.10. However, after a few days, Jaunty has already begun acting up as well. The screen is intermittently jumping, flashing & shifting, for lack of a better explanation. It doesn't matter what I am doing, whether using FF, Evolution or checking my preferences, this new issue occurs. The pc is dual booted w/ Windows, which is behaving normally. This is a new one! I have never experienced this w/ Windows or Ubuntu.Any thoughts, other than upgrading to 9.10 ?

I tried to enable Compiz on my netbook, so I installed ccsm. Then when I enabled visual effects and restarted, my netbooks monitor starts flashing when I boot up. So I restarted in low graphics mode, uninstalled ccsm, and it's still flashing. Is there anything else I need to remove to get my netbooks monitor back to normal?b
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently, whenever I restart my computer, I am automatically logged in and a rapid sequence of flashes repeats itself over and over. First a white screeen appears. Then my desktop background appears, dimmed and overlaid with the netbook-launcher's up and down arrows in the upper lefthand corner. Then my desktop background appears in full color, with my panel above it but no launcher. Rinse wash repeat. I assume it has something to do with Compiz. When escape to a tty and type "compiz --display :0--replace &" the loop ends and everything works. Any ideas how to avoid having to do this every time I restart
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running a new install of 10.10 and have a problem with windows flashing when they need attention. For example a new IM message.
This happens with both aMSN and pidgin. So as far i am aware its not a problem specific to the application.
I'm using lib notify for now so I don't miss incoming messages all together.
Im running compiz with extra visual effects.
When something happens in firefox, the window is flashing in the taskbar, and if the window is on another desktop, then it appears in the current desktop taskbar. I would like to avoid this. I tried a way to change this flashing behavior, or to remove completly taskbar flashing whitout success.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) and every time I boot i get a flashing screen. I didn't have any problems at all with the LiveCD. The graphics card and my wireless adapter worked out of the box. But after the install it won't work. I can choose the OS in GRUB and then there's a purple screen. After that the screen starts flashing and I can hear the login sound.
I have tried using "nomodeset" but that didn't work either. There is no flashing, just a purple screen all the time. But it was possible to enter tty. I also tried booting the Recovery Mode but it just loads and then a pink flashing screen appears.
The graphics card is a XFX Radeon HD6870 1GB.
I installed 11.04 on a machine. After installing did the reboot and logged in. The only thing I see is the background. After I wait a few I see, what I believe to be, a dialog box to finish setup but it will only appear on screen for a fraction of a second then disappear, then about 2 seconds later it will flash again. It continues to do this with out stop. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, I am able to, for only a moment but long enough to click shutdown, see the shutdown options before it disappears and a couple of seconds later it pops back up and disappears again. It continues to do this.
What could be causing this? I have tried other things I found on this forum, but they did not work.
Why does my monitor flashing periodically?
I tried to change the Resolution and Refresh rate. But it does flashing yet. When I installed the system that flashing too. Period of about ten seconds
In windows xp dont have this situation.
My monitor is "HP vs17" Ubuntu version is 10.10 Desktop
I've noticed that when running an mtr (my traceroute) that sometimes some of the hops would light up. It will flash for about half a second then return back to its normal colour.I've search the net, but have not yet found an explanation as to what it means.

Long time linux user, first time with centOS
I am building a basic firewall system with ssh acces only, I only occasionally need gui/gnome access so I have sent my init level to init 3 in /etc/inittab.
My problem is during startup the screen wants to run the gui startup and for some reason the driver isn't quite right so it flashes the screen every time it starts a process and says [OK] because of this I miss 90% of the startup information.
I have already disabled the splash screen in /boot/grub/grub.conf and that did disable the grub splash screen but how can I disable the "centOS" spash stuff? I only want txt at startup, I don't want the system to do anything graphical until I type startx.
I'm using debian for the first time and I recently downloaded the Debian Lenny 201 Live CD to test it on my old computer (I'm planning to use Debian 5.0.4). It has a Pentium III (550 MHz) processor, 192 MB RAM, 8 MB graphics memory, 20 GB HDD with a monitor supporting 1024x768 resolution. The problem is, after the booting is complete a blank flashing screen appears with a cross-shaped cursor in the middle. I continues and nothing happens. I tried with solutions like editing the entries with 'live xdriver=fbdev', 'live xdriver=none', and 'live vga=771'.

I could just dump abrt since it's hardly a necessity, but I'm inclined not to as I think it's a good idea which could potentially be of great benefit to us all.
