Ubuntu Installation :: Loading The ISO CD But It Won't Read?

Apr 30, 2010

After my 2nd attempt to install from a CD my screen is now blank, my cooling fan is on full blast, and my hard drive light is on! Tried another hard drive from a different machine running Windows XP and the same thing happens. Also tried loading the ISO CD again but it won't read that as well.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Mint8/XP - WinXP Loading As A Read Only

Feb 22, 2010

WinXP Partition loading as a read only and can't fix it with PYSDM (storage device manager) Let me provide some history as to how everything was installed: From my old WIN XP hard drive I used clonezilla to clone the drive to a partition on my new hard drive for Linux. Windows is on SDA4 which is the last partition of the drive, it is mounted at sda4/windows using ntfs. I then loaded Mint 8 gnome on the 2nd partition sda2 using ext3 mounted at /, sda1 is my Linux swap, and sda3 is mounted at /home using ext3. While installing I selected to mount Linux ext3 at /

When I choose to load winXP from the grub boot loader I get dev/sda4 no such device 10CDR36778638F73. Also when I try to unmount from disk utility I get the following error: Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: umount: only root can unmount UUID=10CDF36778638F73 from /windows Seemslike I need to rename the drive but it won't let me in disk utility.

My Problem is that within PYSDM (storage device manager) I uncheck Mount file system (sda4/windows) as a read only but it will not stay unchecked. I have unchecked it hit unmount and mount and it still is checked to mount as a read only. This is the code in options for sda4 in PYSDM (storage device manager) nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46

Ubuntu Installation :: (initramfs) Prompt After Alternate CD 9.10 With RAID - Grub Loading: Biosdisk Read Error

Jan 13, 2010

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a nvidia board which, based on the forums I have perused, is a FAKERaid chipset. Originally I tried to install according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto to no avail. I gave up and am resorting to breaking down my raid setup (thus losing my Windows XP installation) and using Linux's software raid (which seems to be the recommended method) with the Alternate CD install.

I went in to the bios and completely disabled my board's RAID function. I then followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/SoftwareRAID , except it popped up with a window advising me "one or more serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices?" which that page didn't mention. I believe I selected "Yes". Setting up the partitions I made (from beginning of disk to end of disk) a RAID1 200MB /boot partition, a RAID0 / partition (90GB?), free space not set up in RAID (approx 20GB for each SATA drive to later install Windows on [if that's even possible]) & then the SWAP partition 2GB at the end of one of the disks (is it OK that this one wasn't in RAID?).

The installation completed, as far as I can tell, without a hitch. Except also of note: my network card doesn't work in the installer (gives an error message about unable to configure dhcp) so i'm not connected to the internet. Then I restart and the following appears: grub loading: error: biosdisk read error. Followed by what appears to be the Ubuntu loading splash (just a small white shape in the middle of the screen), and then:

Ubuntu :: Error While Loading Shared Libraries /lib/libsepl.so.1 - Cannot Read File Data

Jul 12, 2011

I've created quite a predicament with my desktop installation and would prefer to be able to salvage it instead of having to reformat/re-install Ubuntu.

Quite a lot happened and here's my best recollection:

- My Ubuntu installation stopped working and I could not get the desktop to load.

- I backup up my entire home directory by creating a zip file along with other small zip files. I used Alt + Del + F1 to get the CLI to do this.

- I then did different things trying to get the desktop to load.

- I did a apt-get upgrade, to try and get it to work; this was not sucessful.

- Working through several dependency issues I finally got sudo apt-get ubuntu-desktop upgrade to work, but it did not finish completely. I started to get out of memory errors. I am assuming this was because too much hard drive space was taken up by the zip files I had created

-I could not boot and do anything properly after that. Every attempt to modify the filesystem (to free up space) results in an error "Read Only File System". The root file system was not being mounted and I would see root@none on the CL

- Looking on the boot loader I now have Ubuntu 9.10 2.6.24-generic installed

- I burnt a new installation of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS

- Using Live CD I tried to see if I could free up some space and get the system back to more stable state,

However this was NOT sucessful. I tried to mount my drive by sudo mount -t ext3 <dev> <dir> but I keep getting the following error: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libsepol.so.1: cannot read file data: Input/output error

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Of 9.10 Resulted In Quirky Boot Loading?

Jan 4, 2010

So, the quick and dirty: I installed Ubuntu 8.04 early last year and stuck with it until some of the bugs had been worked out of 9.10, after which I did a clean installation of it. During installation, I remember being asked about keeping a back-up for my previous 8.04 installation and I selected yes (figuring better safe than sorry). So, despite uninstalling 8.04 within Vista before installing 9.10, I now (oddly) am able to boot into either Vista, Ubuntu 8.04 OR Ubuntu 9.10. Aesthetics aside, I don't much care that 8.04 is still present. Installing 9.10 complicated the bejesus out of my boot process though. It currently boots as such:

First screen options:
Ubuntu 8.04
Ubuntu 8.04 (safe)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10 Not Loading?

Oct 27, 2010

I just completed an on-line upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10.

Everything went according to plan and the upgrade seemed to go without a hitch. However, when I rebooted following the finish of the process, the system would not start. After a short spell of disk activity, everything stopped and I was left staring at a blank screen - not even a blinking cursor in sight.

Fortunately, I had kept my original installation on a separate partition and this boots OK from the GRUB menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Certain Programs Not Loading Up?

Dec 22, 2010

Just recently, I've run into a problem with VLC.Whenever I clicked on it, it never loaded up. Sometimes a tab of it would appear for a split second, but it would immediately vanish. I assumed it was something wrong with the program itself so I went to the Synaptic Package Manager to uninstall and re-install it, unfortunately, it seems to have the same problem! So I figured maybe I should just update Ubuntu and then discovered my update manager won't update anything, it's broken too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Loading After Upgrade To 11.04

Sep 1, 2011

Ive recently upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 using inbuilt software upgrade centre. Everything downloaded and ran as it should until the system did its initial 11.04 boot when it tried to load and locked up at the UBUNTU title screen (the one with the 5 dots!). If I press the power button on my laptop, Ubuntu then powers off as it should do! The odd thing is, if on the GRUB screen I select "Previous Linux Versions" and then select; "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-11-generic",

it loads Ubuntu 11.04 correctly and works correctly! It only locks up if I leave it to automatically select the initial entry on the GRUB screen; "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-11-generic-pae" How can I solve this problem, as I would like it to load the working 11.04 automatically?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Installer Does Not Loading

Mar 21, 2010

I use to have vista and ubuntu on my PC. Yesterday accidentally I created a new partition "table" the point is that I erased all my partitions on "MyDisk". After a while I decided to re-install ubuntu ( 9.10 karmic koala ) and take advantage of the situation and upgrade to Windows7. Since I already had the ubuntu cd, I installed it first, then downloaded the Win7 cd to install it. The problem is that Windows7 installer doesn't load.

All I get is:
<<BLACK SCREEN>>
Grub loading.
<<BLACK SCREEN>>
underscore
Ubuntu logo
ubuntu login

So I don't know whats wrong. Right now my disk looks like this:
MyDisk >
MyDisk1 ntfs ( For windows 7 )
MyDisk2 > extended (using linux with 2 more partitions: ext4 and linux-swap)
