Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Broken After Kernel Update / "System InstallArchive() Error" When Installing?

Jan 30, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.

Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.

I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:
NvidiaDriverSwitching

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.

I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: System Will Not Boot On Restart After Update?

Apr 24, 2010

I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.

Ubuntu Installation :: Operating System Crashing / Freezing After New Install

Feb 16, 2011

I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).

I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?

I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba

Code:

[2010/03/03 10:07:20, 0] winbindd/idmap.c:201(smb_register_idmap_alloc)
idmap_alloc module tdb already registered!

All other networking seems fine (internet, Synergy+ etc) it's just sharing out to the Windows network that is broken.

Ubuntu :: Update Caused Icons And Appearance To Change Drastically

Aug 4, 2011

I just updated a bunch of things on my system (10.10 x86_64) via synaptic and when I rebooted to finish the update everything looks horrible. All the Icons are different, taskbar is all gray, compiz is acting funny, and the top bar has different icons and coloring. I'm wondering what happened and how I can fix this... I'm guessing it might be the nvidia update, but I'm not sure, here is what I did for the update/install:

Upgraded the following packages:

libsmbclient (2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.4) to 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.5
libwbclient0 (2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.4) to 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.5
linux-headers-2.6.35-30 (2.6.35-30.54) to 2.6.35-30.56

[code]....

The only other thing I changed was to turn off the auto-login so I wouldn't have that damn keyring password dialog pop up during login.

Should I try downgrading the NVIDIA package update or look through any particular logs to see what happened?

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot After NVidia Driver Update

Oct 14, 2010

I'm in the live CD right now trying to figure out what to do. When I first got into Ubuntu, it asked me to install nVidia drivers, so I did. Afterwards, it said I needed to restart my computer to finish installation, but when upon getting past the bootloader, my screen hangs on "Assuming drive cache: write through". I found this post: [URL] but the terminal commands didn't help and I can't find /etc/xorg.cfg even if I show hidden files. I've added a picture of the screen I get when I try to boot up, so maybe someone can tell me what to do to get back into Ubuntu. I would like to be able to get back without having to reinstall, if possible.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: A Recent Update Has Caused IEC958 Output To Stop Working?

Feb 1, 2011

I've recently noticed that my IEC958 digital audio output has stopped working. The short version of why I didn't notice this immediately is that I have two simultaneous audio outputs from my system to my speakers and I hadn't realized the IEC958 output wasn't in use. After messing around with a few settings to no avail, I remembered that I'd recently run update manager (this had to be within the last two weeks) and thought this might be the cause.I have just booted to a 10.10 install disc and verified the IEC958 output works fine there.

Unfortunately I'm not sure which of the recent updates could have caused this problem. Before I submit a bug report on launchpad I was hoping anyone here might have a suggestion as to where to look to figure this out.I'd recently seen this thread and this thread which lead me to believe it may have been a recent kernel update. What's my best course of action to determine the problematic update?[edit]In case anyone needs the info, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on a system with an Intel DH57JG motherboard. Using the HDMI output to a TV, with a separate optical audio cable to my speakers. Also, I've attempted using all of the available digital audio output options in the sound preferences panel and I've also installed gnome-alsamixer and tried enabling/disabling every digital output listed there as well. None of these got the optical output working again.

Ubuntu :: Video Keeps On Freezing (9.10 And Nvidia 7600GT)

I've recently installed Ubuntu and most things work except that when I play any video (from dvd, hard drive, ..... etc.) it's very jerky and with ..... for instance, the browser itself freezes up.

I've got an Nvidia 7600GT AGP graphics card and I've tried all the available drivers (versions 96, 175 & 183) but no luck. I did find a similar thread that mentioned installing the Compiz manager and changing some of the settings in that and on the Nvidia control panel, but this didnt work either.

I tried using puppylinux from a live cd and I found that video played fine from this, so I'm guessing that its just some settings that I need to change around.

Fedora :: F15 Kernel 2.6.38.8-35 Update Wont Boot - Nvidia ?

When I edit Xorg.conf and replace 'nvidia' with 'nv' the new kernel boots but only to fallback mode, trying to then re-install the nvidia drivers shows them to be already installed and I can get no further.

Ubuntu :: System Doesn't Boot With NVidia 6600 / What To Do?

Jun 4, 2011

Yesterday evening I decided to get Photoshop CS5 working with WINE on my Ubuntu 11.04 install, which resulted in great success. Somehow in the process however, I managed to screw up my GLXDock - it wasn't rendering correctly. Despite numerous reboots along the way it still remained a mess, but I digress, that isn't the issue (just some background info if that helps!)

My motherboard has an integrated Intel graphics chipset. Now, since yesterday evening, I haven't been able to boot into Ubuntu using my nVidia 6600 - which I have been able to do for months previous now. Whether it was something I had changed, or an update that killed it I do not know. Booting normally, it will hang on the plain purple splash screen (not even getting to the "Ubuntu" splash) Even when I boot into recovery mode, the system comes out with a "Bad EIP Value" and hangs but ONLY when I have my nVidia card installed. If I take the card out and boot with integrated Intel, it boots to the desktop by the normal means fine and boots to recovery.

Software :: Freezing With An NVIDIA Video Card?

Oct 14, 2010

After seven months of digging I've come to the conclusion that the problem is somewhere between kernel and X server. I've tried contacting several firends with guru-like experience, I tried looking for answers on FedoraForum, I asked a question there, and I even started a bug report where the blame keeps being passed around different components.

I thought the problem might be isolated to my system, as I wasn't able to find any concrete info on this. About a week ago, I finished a new build for a friend. The PC has an NVIDIA card (GTX460). I tried Fedora 13 on that computer and I noticed the problem there as well. Actually, it was more pronounced than on my system. You couldn't use the system (friend's build) for more than two hours.

I'd like to get a little feedback on just how spread this problem is. I'm trying to see if it's a problem with NVIDIA cards in general, with Fedora in particular, if it's confined to 64-bit systems, etc.

Whether or not you have this issue, please post about it. Please also post to indicate that you have no problem if that is the case. I'll start the first "report". Please state all the items in your report.

Video Card: Dual GeForce9800GT

Driver: nvidia (latest akmod-nvidia from rpmfusion) but problem also present with nouveau

Kernel: Noticed problem from 2.6.32 (earliest tested) to 2.6.34 (latest tested). I did not test with earlier kernels

Problem: System randomly freezes. In most cases, keyboard and mouse stop responding (CapsLock does not toggle the light on the keyboard). system stops responding to ssh and ping. A hard reboot is required On rare occasions, the ssh login is possible and restarting the X server usually revives the system.

Ubuntu :: Excessive (15min+) Boot Time Caused By Dmraid?

Jan 3, 2010

I have a truecrypt partition on an nvidia fakeraid raid0.ore there is no data recognizeable to ubuntu's kernel on startup and I think it is causing a big slowdown for me every time I boot up, which takes over ten minutes every time. Attached are bootchart results. What I would like to do is know how to remove dmraid from the startup process. I can't find any scripts in /etc/rc*.d and all of the information I can find on these forums is about how to enable dmraid on boot, not disable it.

Manually using dmraid takes nearly no time at all, which is what I did before this kernel upgrade since ubuntu didn't put dmraid in the startup process. I can't see why it takes dmraid ten minutes to detect raid devices now! The only clue I can see is that in the startup process with the splash screen disabled it talks about examining inodes on both drives in the array and then goes on to spit out stuff about raid 0, raid1, raid2, raid3, raid4 and on and on so it seems like it is loading raid arrays that don't exist and never have.If any bootchart gurus have any advice, please feel free to throw me a bone, I am in fear of restarting!edit: for some reason ubuntuforums shrank my images so that they are unreadable by anybody except those with a large projector.

Ubuntu Installation :: NVIDIA Drivers Not Working After 11.04 Update?

Apr 28, 2011

Tonight I upgraded to 11.04. Once I had finished the upgrade, I restarted my computer as it told me too. When I got past the ubuntu 11.04 (purple background orange dots), it simply went to the terminal and asked me to log in. I tried to restart the X server with "sudo service gdm restart" but no display popped up. I happened to have a few NVIDIA drivers in my downloads file also so I gave these a try, but the "install script" failed.

After all this I booted Ubuntu in graphic failsafe mode. I then decided to see what would happen if I removed the proprietary driver. Upon doing this and rebooting my Ubuntu booted into graphical mode "yay!".So without the Nvidia drivers I can finally see something other than terminal, but, I need those NVIDIA drivers for my work. So what can I do? I have tried installing the new NVIDIA linux drivers from the NVIDIA website, and have tried Installing the recommended driver via "additional drivers", but both have resulted in my being stuck in terminal.

Ubuntu :: Karmic 9.10 With Separate /home Partition Caused "Could Not Update ICEauthority"

Mar 26, 2010

I created a separate /home partition after installing Karmic on a new Sony E series computer.

I used this HowTo : [url]

I copied all the files from the old /home/user using

On booting after the change, the new /home is correctly on a separate partition BUT during boot I get a message : Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority

I checked out posts from people with similar problems.

Ownership and permissions for /home/user/.ICEauthority are correct. Deleting the file & waiting for it to be recreated doesn't work. (Not sure I understood the right way to do this.)

But when I compare other hidden files in the new /home/user directory, quite a few now have their ownership changed to root.

I am unable to connect to my external monitor because of a permission problem (probably connected).
