Ubuntu :: Excessive (15min+) Boot Time Caused By Dmraid?

Jan 3, 2010

I have a truecrypt partition on an nvidia fakeraid raid0.ore there is no data recognizeable to ubuntu's kernel on startup and I think it is causing a big slowdown for me every time I boot up, which takes over ten minutes every time. Attached are bootchart results. What I would like to do is know how to remove dmraid from the startup process. I can't find any scripts in /etc/rc*.d and all of the information I can find on these forums is about how to enable dmraid on boot, not disable it.

Manually using dmraid takes nearly no time at all, which is what I did before this kernel upgrade since ubuntu didn't put dmraid in the startup process. I can't see why it takes dmraid ten minutes to detect raid devices now! The only clue I can see is that in the startup process with the splash screen disabled it talks about examining inodes on both drives in the array and then goes on to spit out stuff about raid 0, raid1, raid2, raid3, raid4 and on and on so it seems like it is loading raid arrays that don't exist and never have.If any bootchart gurus have any advice, please feel free to throw me a bone, I am in fear of restarting!edit: for some reason ubuntuforums shrank my images so that they are unreadable by anybody except those with a large projector.

OpenSUSE Install :: Activating DMRAID On Boot-up?

Nov 13, 2010

1) Use INSSERV to start DMRAID

2) Use MKINITRD to create a new INITRD file which loads the DMRAID module.

Neither solution showed any detail of how to accomplish this, and which files to edit or what order I should use to tackle either. With the second solution, I have another SUSE 11.2 installation on another hard drive. Would it be ok to boot into that and create a new INITRD with DMRAID activated, or would it be better to break the RAID-set boot into one of the drives and create INITRD for that RAID 1 system, then recreate the RAID-set? The only issue I would see is that fstab, device mapper and grub would need the new pdc_xxxxxxxxxx value, which can be changed from the second installation.

My system is:

Asus M4A78T-E with fakeraid SB750 controller
AMD Black Edition - AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHz Processor
2 x Samsung 1TB drives
Suse 11.2

I have Windows XP on another hard drive purely for overclocking and syncing the 1TB drives, but I can't actually boot into the SUSE system until this issue is sorted out.

Fedora :: Excessive CPU With 2.6.32.9-67 On 12

Mar 8, 2010

I upgraded via yum to 2.6.32.9-67 today and rebooted.

Running Google Picasa under wine is pretty much unusable. A quick reboot to the previous 2.6.31 kernel provided via the Fedora repositories previously solved my symptoms.

I don't think the problem is limited to Picasa but haven't done anything scientific to show what the problem could be.

Because I run on a trusty six year old laptop I visually monitor the system with the System Monitor applet. Usually slowness is i/o wait while the disk is retrieving information but on 2.6.32 it's pegged as system time eating up my CPU.

Before I report this in bugzilla, can anyone else tell me what their experiences with 2.6.32-9.67 have been?

Also, are there any fine-grained performance monitor tools that might explain what's going on to peg the CPU so high? top just shows Picasa running.. and it can be a hog doing background work at times. If it is, a reboot just continues the cpu needs not eliminates them as in my case.

Software :: Excessive RAM / Swap Space Usage

Mar 2, 2009

For some reason, if I leave my Linux box running for several days, the swap space and RAM slowly fill up until my system is so slow that it takes around 15 seconds just to open a new tab if Firefox (Iceweasel, specifically). I have 512GB RAM and almost a gig of swap; how on earth does it fill up so much? Even if I close all my programs, there's still over 600MB swap used and all RAM is full. I've included a screenshot of 'top' running just about two minutes after I closed all my running programs.

(Before I closed it, I had only 71MB swap free.) I know that Linux is supposed to make good usage of RAM, but isn't this over the top? Is there a way to force it to use only required memory with no or little extras kept in RAM? Just thought I'd add in the fact that I'm running Xfce as opposed to KDE or GNOME in an attempt to have a smoother running system on my old hardware. Also, what's the "VIRT" column?

Ubuntu Servers :: Upgrade 8.04 To RAID 1 After Install / DMRAID Necessary?

Nov 27, 2010

I have two Ubuntu 8.04 servers currently. I've purchased some 500 GB hard drives and a RAID cage just yesterday and plan to change my current servers to using RAID1 with the hard drives. Much like everyone else, I have the nVidia RAID built onto the motherboard that I plan to use. There are many how-to's out there on how to setup RAID using dmraid during the install process - but what would a person do if they are simply changing over to a RAId system? I installed dmraid a few days ago on the server. It seems that even though I have RAID shut off in the BIOS, it saw the one and only drive as a mirrored array. When I rebooted today, the server would not start; it had ERROR: degraded disks.. bla bla. Then Grub tried to start the partition based off the UUID of the drive (which was not changed) and it said "device or resource busy" and would not boot.

This problem was corrected by going into the BIOS and turning on RAID. When I rebooted, the nVidia RAID firmware started and said degraded. I went in there and deleted the so-called mirror keeping the data intact. Rebooted, disabled the RAID feature in the BIOS and then the server loaded normally with a message "NO RAID DISKS" - but at lest it did boot! So this leads me to believe that trying to turn on a RAID-1 array (just mirror between two disks) may be a challenge since I already have the system installed. I will be using Partimage to make an image of the current hard drive and then restore it to one of the new drives.

The next question is - is it a requirement that dmraid is even installed? While I understand that the nVidia RAID is fake-raid - if I go into the nVidia RAID controller and setup the mirroring between the two disks before I even restore the files to the new disk, will both drives be mirrored? However, I do think that I'd probably have to have dmraid installed to check the integrity of the array. So, I'm just a bit lost on this subject. I definitely do not want to start this server over from scratch - so curious to know if anyone has any guidance on simply making a mirrored array after the install procedure, what kind of Grub changes will be needed (because of the previous resource is busy message), and whether installing dmraid is even a requirement.

Fedora Installation :: Force The 13 To Use Dmraid?

Sep 21, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with onboard ICH9R RAID support. I have successfully used this with Fedora 9 in a striped configuration.Upon moving to Fedora 13 (fresh/clean install from scratch), I've noticed that it is no longer using dmraid. It now appears to be using mdadm. Additionally, I need to select load special drivers (or something close to that) during the install to have it find my array - which I've never had to do before with F9. While the install appears to work ok and then subsequently run, my array is reporting differences .. presumably because it is trying to manage what mdadm is also trying to manage. More importantly, I can no longer take a full image and successfully restore it as I could with the dmraid F9 install. Is there anyway to force F13 to use the dmraid it successfully used previously?

Fedora :: Firefox Becomes Unusably Slow / Uses Excessive Memory

Nov 23, 2010

I'm using Firefox 3.6.12 on Fedora 14 (64 bit) and have noticed that after using it for a while (and/or leaving the browser open for hours at a time), it becomes almost unusably slow and uses an excessive amount of memory. For example, any of the following can cause Firefox to temporarily (for 5 to 10 seconds or so) stop responding:

- clicking on a link
- opening or closing a tab
- scrolling
It will always start responding again, sometimes after the window darkens (to indicate that it's not responding) but it's so bad that it can't really be used. Closing it and opening it (restoring the tabs) again fixes it for a while, but the problem recurs. Regarding the memory usage, it was using 850MB (according to System Monitor) when I closed it, and having re-opened it and restored the tabs, it's now using under 200MB (but appears to be rising).

Another way that this manifests itself is that when trying to watch a Flash video (like iPlayer), it pauses for a second every 30 seconds or so, making it very annoying to watch them (I've switched to Chrome for this now, and am tempted to switch for general browsing, but like the plugins in Firefox). Is anyone else having these issues, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Lock-up During Excessive Disk I/O

Aug 17, 2011

At times, the disk I/O will go through the roof and cause the system to slow to a crawl. X becomes really slow and can go completely unresponsive, dropping all keyboard input, preventing me from restarting X. Sometimes I will switch to a virtual terminal to log in and run iotop to check what is using all the I/O, but it will be so I/O bound that the login times out. Sometimes I do manage to get in and can run iotop and then it is a matter of waiting 10 minutes or so for python to load up. Usually by this time, whatever was causing the slowdown has finished and so I don't even know what the problem is. Other times it never recovers (I once left it over night, since it was at the end of my work day and just went home)

This is my work computer so it is very inconvenient to have to wait for this I/O blockage or lose all my work rebooting. I thought it was due to swapping, so I disabled swap, but that hasn't helped. I'm running the cfq I/O scheduler, but I've tried both deadline and noop.

Also, is there a way to disable the login timeout so I can at least get logged in to the box from the console when this happens?

Server :: Squid Excessive Memory Consuming On Fedora 12?

Feb 7, 2011

There is squid 3.1.8 on a Fedora 12 server with 2 GB of RAM. It is used for sharing the Internet for approximatively 80 PC's. The problem is that it is really a memory hog, when enabling delay pools. I am using the following configuration for the memory pools:

Code:

delay_pools 1
delay_class 1 2
delay_access 1 allow drumuri

[code]....

There are moments when the squid process uses approximatively all the RAM and goes into swapping. After that I restart it, it goes well for a while and again eats up all the memory. On the Internet it says that Squid uses a lot of memory, but should it use 2 GB of memory, even if all 80 people are online at the same time?

Ubuntu Installation :: Move From Dmraid/fakeRAID To Software RAID?

Oct 10, 2010

About a year ago I bought a new compy and decided to get on-motherboard RAID, and by golly I was gonna use it, even if it wasn't worth it.

Well, after one year, two upgrades, a lot of random problems dealing with RAID support, and a lot of articles read, I have come to my senses.

The problem: I have a fakeraid using dmraid, RAID 1, two SATA harddrives. They are mirrors of eachother, including separate home and root partitions. I actually found the method I think I had used here: [URL]

The ideal solution: No need to reinstall, no need of another drive, no need to format.

My last resort: Buy a drive, copy my home directory, start from scratch, copy my stuff over.

PS: if it matters, I'm on 64 bit 10.04 LTS

Fedora Installation :: FC10 - Excessive Horizontal Display Jitter

Feb 9, 2009

After having used fc5 for years, I installed fc10 in order to be able to run the newest versions of some of my tools. Under fc5, my monitor (Dell 2407FPW) and adapter (ATI Technologies Inc RV380) have happily coexisted at 1920x1200 76Hz. During the fc10 install, the monitor flickered a few times, then settled down (an auto-detect by the installation?) Now, after installation is complete, if I display a window with a lot of small text, the text is nearly unreadable because of horizontal jitter. If I move the window part-way off-screen, so that there is less small text on-screen, the jitter is somewhat reduced.

My hunch was that the installation got the ModeLine settings wrong, but when I went to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I couldn't find it. I also ran a case-insensitive search for any file containing "ModeLine", starting in /etc, but nothing turned up except /etc/prelink.cache, a binary file.

I tried running Computer/SystemSettings/Display, but every time I do this, the monitor immediately goes into sleep mode, and nothing will recover it out except an X11 reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace).

Is there any way to tweak the display settings other than the gui ("Display") program?

Slackware :: Excessive Audio Buffering Required - Distortion Still Remains

Mar 25, 2010

I use my system as my stereo. It's the only thing I listen to. For quite some time now though, I have had a problem with audio not being properly played. What I get is what sounds like reverberation in the audio feed. I found that increasing the amount of time for the feeds to be buffered helps, but only partially.

I also installed another parallel system in this very same computer (on a different disk) which initially didn't have this problem. But then I did an upgrade and the problem became apparent on that system also. However after having done a couple of reboots, I noticed the problem disappeared. Now that system running is running clean as it was initially.

This may be an issue with my nVidia drivers. I'm not sure. Because I noticed problems on the second parallel system after attempting to install the proprietary nVidia graphics driver, which had numerous unpleasant side effects. So I removed it. But the problem didn't go away immediately. Only after I had rebooted a number of times did the sound begin to play as it would normally be expected to.

My primary system, the one from which I am now posting this runs KDE. But on the parallel system, due to a much smaller disk space, I am running XFCE. So this isn't a KDE-only issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install: Dmraid Doesn't See Second Disk Array On Ich10r?

Oct 11, 2010

I've googled my problem but I'm not sure I can find an answer in layman's terms. So here's my noob, simple question, please answer it in semi-noob-friendly terms I've been trying to install ubuntu for a while on my desktop pc. I gave it another go with 10.10 but I always have the same problem:

I've got two raid sets connected to an ich10r chip and they work fine in windows (2 samsung 1to + 2 raptors 75gb). Upon installation, dmraid only sets up the first raid set (Samsung array) but not the second one (Clean raptors intended for ubuntu). I don't have any other installation option, all my sata connectors are unavailable. So, is there a manual install solution? Can I force dmraid to mount the second raid set and not the first one? I think I read somewhere that this was a dmraid bug, but I can't find it anymore.
