Sometimes, running "nvidia-settings" will cause the whole desktop to freeze for about 5-10 seconds, spike the Xorg CPU usage up to 100%, until the settings appear where everything goes back to normal.
Running "nvidia-settings" from a terminal does not show any output and restarting X does not help. Any ideas how to figure out what is happening, any places to look for log files?
I am using an up-to-date openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit), KDE 4.5.2, an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT and the proprietary NVIDIA driver 260.19.12, which I installed manually following the instructions from
SDB:NVIDIA the hard way - openSUSE

I've been having this issue since at least 9.10. I'm randomly encountering disk thrashing and application freezing which lasts around 30 seconds. Some applications seem to encounter this more often than others. Firefox and Picasa are pretty reliable at reproducing the issue. It also happens often when I'm using Transmission. CPU usage is not unusually high during the 'thrashing' sessions. Running iotop hasn't shed any light on the problem either. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this or maybe someone could give me some clues. I'm running a dell inspiron 530 with ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I have 4gb of ram. Here is my 'df -h' if that is helpful.

I've been using Fedora 5 for a few years and have never had a problem with it. Recently I upgraded to Fedora 14 and have run into a problem with the desktop freezing a few minutes after it comes up. I can move the mouse pointer around but nothing happens when I click on any icon. This happens with Gnome as well as KDE. I haven't tried Xfce. I think I read somewhere that the freezing is a problem with my video chip which is an SiS located on the motherboard. Is there a way to fix this problem?

I just installed Fedora 11, and am trying to install my video card drivers. I have an Nvidia geforce gtx 260m. So far I have installed both the kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia packages, and I still cannot enable desktop effects. After i installed the akmod package, I sometimes see the nvidia logo for a split second when I log out, but my drivers are still not correctly installed.

I am trying to install 11.2 but it keeps freezing. I press install and the Linux kernal loads and afterwards I get a black screen and after 30 seconds the DVD player stops running. I have also tried to the online network install and the exact same thing happens. I also tried a DVD I have of 11.1 which I know is good since I have successfully installed it on other machines and the result is also the same. My computer currently has a dual boot of XP and Kubuntu 9.10.
I am returning to Suse after experimenting with Kubuntu but thought I would leave the Kubuntu on the machine (prefer Suse but Kubuntu installed very easily on my computer). Could the Kubuntu be causing this problem or is the difficulty something else? I have also tried the safe install and the other options to no success.

I upgraded from FC11 to FC13 last night. The desktop has not been stable since. It will run for anything from 5 to 30 minutes before it locks up. Interesting, if I am already ssh'd in, I can perform commands, but a new SSH will hang, and if I try to SU to root in an already logged in ssh, it hangs.
However, I did finally manage to get the messages that were logged to /var/log/messages at the time of the desktop freeze.
Here are the messages. The first 3 about high speed usb may or may not be relevant. The freeze appeared to happen around the 4th message in the log below.
Code:

I've recently installed Ubuntu and most things work except that when I play any video (from dvd, hard drive, ..... etc.) it's very jerky and with ..... for instance, the browser itself freezes up.
I've got an Nvidia 7600GT AGP graphics card and I've tried all the available drivers (versions 96, 175 & 183) but no luck. I did find a similar thread that mentioned installing the Compiz manager and changing some of the settings in that and on the Nvidia control panel, but this didnt work either.
I tried using puppylinux from a live cd and I found that video played fine from this, so I'm guessing that its just some settings that I need to change around.

After seven months of digging I've come to the conclusion that the problem is somewhere between kernel and X server. I've tried contacting several firends with guru-like experience, I tried looking for answers on FedoraForum, I asked a question there, and I even started a bug report where the blame keeps being passed around different components.
I thought the problem might be isolated to my system, as I wasn't able to find any concrete info on this. About a week ago, I finished a new build for a friend. The PC has an NVIDIA card (GTX460). I tried Fedora 13 on that computer and I noticed the problem there as well. Actually, it was more pronounced than on my system. You couldn't use the system (friend's build) for more than two hours.
I'd like to get a little feedback on just how spread this problem is. I'm trying to see if it's a problem with NVIDIA cards in general, with Fedora in particular, if it's confined to 64-bit systems, etc.
Whether or not you have this issue, please post about it. Please also post to indicate that you have no problem if that is the case. I'll start the first "report". Please state all the items in your report.
Video Card: Dual GeForce9800GT
Driver: nvidia (latest akmod-nvidia from rpmfusion) but problem also present with nouveau
Kernel: Noticed problem from 2.6.32 (earliest tested) to 2.6.34 (latest tested). I did not test with earlier kernels
Problem: System randomly freezes. In most cases, keyboard and mouse stop responding (CapsLock does not toggle the light on the keyboard). system stops responding to ssh and ping. A hard reboot is required On rare occasions, the ssh login is possible and restarting the X server usually revives the system.

I have Dell Vostro laptop with Core2 processor 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I want to install Fedora. I tried to install it with Fedora_14_ 32 bit and Fedora_14_ 64 bit. After booting by DVD or USB, I get initial blue screen in which I select Install and it starts for few seconds and freezes there, it does not move ahead. I got Fedora 32 bit DVD from Fedora so it should have come with checksum checked. So IMO DVD is ok, it is something else with regard to hardware detection, stopping installation to go ahead. I tried 3 times, but do not go ahead.

I 've just upgraded from f11 to f12 via preupgrade everything went fine, i corrected the rpms in package-cleanup --orphans and i have nothing in --problems and --dupes
The problem is with kde, i get a ~35 sec lag (screen completely frozen, mouse moving but ineffective, keyboard shortcut like ctrl-c, ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-fn executed only after the lag) when: starting kde (read below) closing kde (35 secs between the kde close sound and the beginning of any real shutdown) starting programs like: krunner, lancelot, konsole, gnome-terminal, kickoff it does not happen when running most programs, like opera, firefox, gedit, even xterm it does not happen in a gnome-session
Running krunner gives a dbus error message:
So i thought maybe it was a dbus timeout so i tried setting a lower timeout in session.conf and system.conf, but it doesnt change anything xcept kde startup: with the lower timeouts, the kde load screen takes less time, i see the desktop but then it hangs for 35 secs before loading programs and plasmoids with the standard dbus config, the kde load screen takes 35 secs more but then the desktop loads right.

ok did an regular (not version change) upgrade on friends pc and now have no desktop?
Boot loads to console and can logon to console but startx fails, checking logs it says it can't load nvidia module. As upgrade had included kernal i tried to boot to older kernel but this failed with grub error.
I tried console install of nvidia-current and nvidia-module (not sure if correct name but was nvidia kernel module) but still no joy.

This is my Fedora 11 installation review:The pc (cd2, 7600gs, 2gb ram) boots ok from any of the many Fedora live cd/dvd.After booting it goes to a nice window with a (3 colored flashing forward motion) tollbar at the bottom, where the words Generic 11 are written at the bottom right.
So far so good: no questions to answer, the Dvd is speaning out loud. 2 min later the above mentioned screen changes into a b&w verbose mode sreen. After a dozen of written lines, where the last one says "bridge firewalling ..." the drive noise gradually extinguishes, its red light turns off, the b&w verbose screen dies and even the Pc looks like dead too. Could be waiting here until next day, nothing more happens. So, I do various alt/ctrl/del, until the Cd/dvd (liteon) ejects and the pc reboots.
This is really CRAZZY. Lately I'v been trying many different distribution installations and this never happened. It's equal with any of the many fedora live cd/dvd's, window manager's, 32/64 bit. I did try last week, 2weeks before, today.... and did also try fedora Omega but is the same result at the end.I wonder if this is just me, missing some Fedora fundamental specific thing, or if ithis has happened to some of you.I browsed and searched but this looks like an uncommon issue, as I didn't find nothing similar.

When it was started i saw the icon of NetBeans IDE 6.8, then I tried to open it, but all in vain. A screen opens for a few seconds and then it disappears. I think it is the problem of improper installation. And now I m totally unable to uninstall that bundle.

I'm going to be building a new desktop computer and I'm trying to decide between either an ati or nvidia graphics card. I've previously only used integrated intel graphics in my laptop and I've never had any problems. However, from looking at the forums it looks like neither ati nor nvidia will be quite as smooth. What's the current consensus for ease of use?

I installed FC11 from installation cds twice and I'm having a problem with Firefox freezing the system. The mouse cursor will move but nothing else is responsive, including mouse buttons and keyboard.I checked the media on every disc and they all check fine.I never had this problem with FC10. I tried upgrading Firefox -- with the necessary dependency upgrades too but without success.I tried to downgrade to FC10 Firefox and ran into a great big hassle with that.

I recently ran into a problem with my install. I accidentally messed with the bottom panel in my KDE on my root account. This caused my desktop to freeze up. Every time I attempt to restart into my root, it loads, but is completely frozen. Is there some way I can overwrite my KDE config files without starting X server or from a standard user account?

Hey everyone I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux so please bear with me . I recently installed 10.10 on my new htpc. The initial install went great, until I went to install the updated driver for my graphics card. What I did was I downloaded the driver off of nvidia. Then I did these steps:
1. ctrl-alt-f1
2. logged in
3. sudo services gdm stop
4. I then located the driver package that I downloaded and ran it, it seemed to install fine (except for an error about some install script? but it let me proceed)
5. sudo services gdm start
It went to the gdm/ubuntu desktop. However I then connected it via HDMI, and the resolution was way off (top bar was not even displayed on TV) and I tried many different settings but no luck in fixing it. Next after restarting it did not automatically boot to the gdm/desktop. Instead it stayed at the command line login (the ctrl-alt-f1 screen).
tl;dr : 1. How to make it automatically boot to the gdm/desktop after I updated my gpu driver
2. How to fix the resolution for HDMI from my gpu to my TV. (DVI works fine

After migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!

Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

I've been having a problem with debian lately. It seems that sometimes a rectangular corner on the top left of my screen freezes and shows what was previously there. It goes away when I close all open windows but shows up again if I open multiple applications, especially if I open the terminal and another application. It can become very distracting and makes it impossible to see what is on the top left corner of my screen.
I'm including a screenshot of my desktop.
I am running Debian 8.2 Jessie on an Asus Q400A with 8 GB of RAM. I have an Intel Core i7-3632QM CPU @ 3.2GHz and am using XFCE as my Desktop Environment.
