Ubuntu Installation :: Update - Error - PkgProblemResolver:Resolve Generated Breaks - This May Be Caused By Held Packages
Oct 10, 2010
I'm trying to update my Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10... But I get this error message:pkgProblemResolver:Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
I tried to disable all the repositories, and also "sudo apt-get -f"... But still having this error message...
As usual, I let the update manager run.. But now something bad happened and a red button is showing in the system tray, which when I hover my mouse over it, tells me to open package manager or try "sudo apt-get" in terminal to see what is wrong..
If I enter sudo apt-get upgrade, I get the following errors.. How can I fix it.. I am unable to open package manager itself..
Code: E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing gconf2 (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Network-manager-gnome caused an error during system update.Quote:network-manager-gnome: Depends: network-manager (>=0.8.99 but 0.8.4~git.20110319t175609.d14809b-0ubuntu3 is to be installedHow can I update network-manager?
Since I upgraded Gnash: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=115357 I can't upgrade anything. At least I think that's when it started.
In Aptitude, I have 176 "packages being automatically held in their current state", and 47 "packages being held back". When I updated the package list, there was a dozen or so lines that were yellow instead of green, but it ran too fast for me to read. I doubt that is important, but I try to give as much info as possible.
A few weeks ago, i installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.10. I installed several of my previously used programs and am now having trouble with the update manager. It refuses to download updates; insisting that it does not trust the source. The details in the error message indicate that the problem is with a package for Banshee Media Player. I am posting a link for a video I made that displays this problem. [URL]
I tried to install my ATI propertary driver and it says
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages
I have held broken packages and it wont download/install the driver :S what should i do?
I have had a similar problem before i think, also when i used peppermint i couldnt install my driver, but forget it i like ubuntu the best....could this happen because i clicked skip during some parts of the installation of ubuntu?
I had Ubuntu working perfectly until I installed updates for the proprietary Nvidia drivers. Now Ubuntu freezes at the Ubuntu loading screen. Im using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.I used to know how to access the terminal at bootup but I no longer remember.
It seems that updating the Kernel breaks my installation. I've tried it twice, and both times it disabled my gui desktop. I'm posting this with links2 in my terminal. The terminal works perfectly.
This is really annoying, as I can't even use my computer. What do you think is the problem?
I did an update during a time when power was cycling due do a nasty snow storm, but I'm pretty sure the update was completed successfully before I lost power. What did happen though is that my BIOS setup was reset.
Now if my HP Laserjet 1020 is plugged into USB during boot all other USB devices freeze for a while. So I played with my BIOS setting for USB:
- Enabled V1.1 and V2.0 - Disabled System USB Shadowing
So now my bootup doesn't hang. But now when I actually go into Karmic I still can't print.
dmesg shows the following:
[ 205.940008] usb 1-10: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9 [ 219.510026] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 10 [ 223.430008] usb 1-10: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10 [ 223.600766] usb 1-10: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
My mythbuntu 10.10 system including its lirc managed remote control has been working fine.I've recently done some updates (see below) and now the remote doesn't work correctly (only some of its keys seem to work). I suspect that lirc is no longer managing the remote and now instead the remote is now being treated like a keyboard. How do I get lirc managing my remote control correctly again,Before the updates the kernel was:
Code: $ uname -a Linux pvr 2.6.35-28-generic-pae #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 18 20:43:15 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux
Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.
I just installed ubuntu 10.10, and im triying to update, when i uncheck the packages that i dont want and click on the "install updates" button in the update manager, the update manager check it again and download the packages that i dont want
E: Type 'ain' is not known on line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/gnome3-team-gnome3-natty.listE: The list of sources could not be read. i get this error when i try to update my packages, anybody know a fix?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows 7. I tried installing the TOR proxy thing long back, and today when I tried downloading a package it gave me that. Now even if I try updating my system, it says:-
Code:
W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'TOR' W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/main/i18n/Translation-en_IN.bz2 Could not resolve 'TOR' W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/restricted/i18n/Translation-en_IN.bz2 Could not resolve 'TOR'

Cant boot windows or ubuntu Well i have two hard drives, i used wubi on windows (which is on my c: drive) to put ubuntu 10.10 on my d: drive. Everything was running smoothly until the update manager uptated ubuntu. When the installation was completed, i was told to restart. So i did. When it restarted, nothing happened. My computer froze and i cant access windows or ubuntu, and i cant change anything.
I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba
I just updated a bunch of things on my system (10.10 x86_64) via synaptic and when I rebooted to finish the update everything looks horrible. All the Icons are different, taskbar is all gray, compiz is acting funny, and the top bar has different icons and coloring. I'm wondering what happened and how I can fix this... I'm guessing it might be the nvidia update, but I'm not sure, here is what I did for the update/install:
Upgraded the following packages:
libsmbclient (2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.4) to 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.5 libwbclient0 (2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.4) to 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.5 linux-headers-2.6.35-30 (2.6.35-30.54) to 2.6.35-30.56
[code]....
The only other thing I changed was to turn off the auto-login so I wouldn't have that damn keyring password dialog pop up during login.
Should I try downgrading the NVIDIA package update or look through any particular logs to see what happened?
