Ubuntu Installation :: Operating System Crashing / Freezing After New Install

Feb 16, 2011

I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).

I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?

Ubuntu :: Chromium And Firefox Crashing Nautilus - Freezing System

Nov 9, 2010

I've got a fun one for you. What makes absolutely any attempt to view a flash video crash Ubuntu 10.10, both in firefox and chromium? Lately, firefox began doing this. I switch to chromium, same thing. Also, the system completely locks up after about 30 minutes online if I can get the thing to work at all. When this happens, the rounded edges of all windows disappear, the menus become unresponsive, and any attempt to open the system monitor to end the offending process results in an "Unable to fork new process, system resource unvailable" something like that.

My entire online routine goes like this: open terminal, su to admin account to enable ufw (which will not run at boot no matter what I try), su to normal, limited account, open web browser, things explode (or work for 15 minutes before freezing completely.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Install 10.10 Wiped Drive \ No Operating System At All?

Dec 25, 2010

So I was installing 10.10 to be my only operating system on my 3 year old custom built computer and all of a sudden it stopped working at the point of "whenever you are ready" but not letting me go forward because it still was loading. I waited a long time and it was frozen so I restarted my computer and now I don't have anything on it. No operating system at all. Except the symbol " _ " blinking rapidly. Nothing is working and I just want to run 10 on my desktop

Debian Installation :: USB Install 'Operating System Not Found'

Jun 7, 2011

I've decided to move to Debian because I have noticed Ubuntu releases getting progressively more unstable.I am following the official Debian installation guide. Just did this with the Debian 6.0 Net install .iso: 4.3.1. Preparing a USB stick using a hybrid CD or DVD image. Debian CD and DVD images can now be written directly a USB stick, which is a very easy way to make a bootable USB stick. Simply choose a CD or DVD image that will fit on your USB stick. See Section 4.1,Official Debian GNU/Linux CD-ROM Sets to get a CD or DVD image.

Alternatively, for very small USB sticks, only a few megabytes in size, you can download the mini.iso image from the netboot directory (at the location mentioned in Section 4.2.1,Where to Find Installation Image). The CD or DVD image you choose should be written directly to the USB stick, overwriting its current contents.

The mouse cursor will move but nothing else is responsive, including mouse buttons and keyboard.I checked the media on every disc and they all check fine.I never had this problem with FC10. I tried upgrading Firefox -- with the necessary dependency upgrades too but without success.I tried to downgrade to FC10 Firefox and ran into a great big hassle with that.

Debian Installation :: USB Stick Install Fails - Missing Operating System

Nov 18, 2014

I want to try Debian on my Asus Eee netbook and I'm trying to follow the instructions in URL... But just copying the ISO file to the USB drive then trying to boot from it doesn't seem to work. I just get "Missing operating system".

The Eee can use an external optical drive as well but that failed also. I'm sure I need to do more to prepare the USB drive or CD? Can I prepare the USB Drive or CD on my Windows system, and make it boot on the netbook (which has another Linux distro on it now)?

Fedora Installation :: 'Missing Operating System' After 10 Install On Dell M6400?

Jan 31, 2009

I have installed Fedora 10 on a Dell M6400. It has 2 disks in a mirror raid. It came with Windows Vista, but I am not doing a dual boot setup. I have formattet the disk with this installation.I downloaded http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/relea...0-i386-DVD.iso, burned the DVD and did the install check. It passed the check. The installation went fine, but after the first reboot I am getting "Missing operating system".

I have no idea where to begin... Could the installation media be faulty after all? I there anyway to get passed this, without reinstalling? I know this may have something to do with the boot loader, but I don't know anything about it.I have installed Fedora 4,5,6,8,9 and this never happened to me before, but then again, I did all these installations on my old Dell Latitude.... Could this have something to do with the new hardware?

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install In System As One Of The Multiple Operating Systems

Mar 13, 2009

I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...

[code]....

Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...

It takes me to the screen

1) Install or upgrade fedora
2) rescue existing installation...
3)
4) Memory test

when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 And "install Alongside With Other Operating System" Option?

Dec 5, 2010

So I wanted to install ubuntu on my pc along with Windows XP (I also had vista, but it did not survive motherboard replacing I burned the LiveCD and booted from it. I chose to try ubuntu. After few minutes of playing with it I started the installer from the icon. I tried the "install alongside with other operating system" option, but I how could know what it will do? There is almost no information in that window. I have two 750GB hdds. sda with big partition over whole space and sdb with two partitions (Vista, and 40GB for Windows XP), but the installer shows only a small strip with ubuntu sign with no readable information! My sda has only 8GB of space free, so would it resize the partition to be 8GB smaller and make new partition for Linux there? On sdb it does not show my two partitions from some reason, but just one big labeled Windows 7 loader, so what would it do there? Delete the WinXP partition? Not a clue because there is no information visible in that supersmall strip with ubuntu sign on it. Just that there are some partitions hidden.

Mouseclick or mouseover do nothing. OK so I changed to the "manually specify partitions" mode to be sure what it does...And now what? I decided to shrink my WinXP partition and let the installer use the empty space, but what a surprise? It does not know what to do with! "No root file system is defined". OK so I fired up firefox and surfed a bit to know what partitions are needed. I then made ext4 partition and swap partition (not a clue how big they should be though : But there is again that message about no root filesystem! OMG so then I somehow figured out I have to assign a mount point / to it, but why there isn't any tip or info that this must be done remains a mystery for me. OK so the installation finally started and I thought that it will be OK at last. But guess what happens! No GRUB boot menu appeared but there was a blank screen for a strangely long time and then the computer rebooted again and then Windows XP started right away! WTH? I guess installer failed to change MBR or something.

OK so I booted from LiveCD again and now what... There are some guides from 2006 to be googled, but when I typed grub into a console it said it is not installed! This is great. Now I crossed a point where no BFU would ever dare to go I said to myself :- When I used the command to install grub it told me it will uninstall grub-pc package. What is grub-pc? Typing grub-pc does not do anything. Is it even possible to install something when running from a LiveCD? The crazy story does not end here. I thought that I will install it again and risk the first option "install alongside with other operating systems", if it will have any more luck with GRUB. So I did that on sdb and it took crazy long time.

I was so afraid what it was doing, but it was probably shrinking my big Vista partition. Then it was installed and what a surprise - I booted right into Windows XP again You probably think I am a masochist if I keep trying so many options desperately, but I frequently help my friends with pcs so I am glad I can test all options and be prepared for anything Now I reinstalled the system again while I was writing this and I will try to figure out how to fix that damn GRUB so I could boot into Linux

Ubuntu :: Various Web Browsers Crashing / Screen Freezing

Oct 22, 2010

Firefox 3.6.11, Chromium 6, Google Chrome 7, they all crash or freeze on me and I can't figure out what is going on. I'm on a fresh/clean install of 10.10 with all updates installed. I've tried reviewing all the logs in /var/logs/ but didn't find anything unusual although I might have missed something. I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver for my video card (GeForce FX 5500 - 173.x drivers) so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it or that it may be my NIC card? I've gone to the NIC card manufacturers website (Realtek) for updated drivers, but the site says the drivers are built in to the kernel and there is no download available. It seems as though the only time it crashes or the screen freezes (sometimes with the lights blinking on my keyboard) is when I'm browsing the internet.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an old IBM T21 laptop. It starts very happily, and I am able to partition the disk & copy the files to the HDD. However, when it loads the desktop there is an icon for the CD drive (and install disk). Everything appears to be fine, but I don't see any confirmation of the installation being completed. The CD drive does not open when the button is pressed. When I restart the laptop, I get the message 'operating system not found'. Starting the machine using the CD works fine. The disk shows that the partitions have been created, and I am told that Ubuntu 9.10 is installed.

Same result. I then reformatted it marked it as active and installed Ubuntu again and it did boot the 80 but it said the NTLDR is missing.

Then I searched on the net for some answers on how to install ubuntu onto a computer without an operating system, and they said to enter BIOS menu and boot the ubuntu from the USB.
