I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.
i am having trouble installing xubuntu 10.04 with my evga geforce 6200 video card. My motherboard has the onboard intel 845g? card. The computer will not read the live cd with the video card installed. it hangs on the splash screen right after choosing " try without installing" i have tried nomodeset but that dose not help. I have no problems installing with the video card removed. My computer i a hp pavilion a647c.
I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal
1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..

I have a bit of a problem with the proprietary nvidia driver which I installed as a binary on suse 11.3, when I run the nvidia-settings gui it does not give any widescreen display modes as options. My monitor is an Acer x193w which will do 1440x900 but there is no option for that. The monitor is just listed as a generic CRT, and only 4x3 display modes are given. My card is a PNY Geforce 6200 AGP 512MB.
I just installed a minimal version of Ubuntu 10.10 (with Openbox) over 10.04. Mainly everything's ok, but I have three problems:

Before rebooting/shutting down works. I, however, would like to have this permanently fixed so I don't have to run these commands every time before rebooting/shutting down.
2. I can't install the ATi video card drivers. I downloaded the correct driver (10.9) from the ATi website and made sure I had the packages found here installed. I also made it executable by running

3. When booting, I get a message saying something like "intel_ips can't find i915 symbols, so graphics turbo is disabled". When googling for this, I see this is a kernel related issue. Since I don't have any understandings of kernels, I thought this is a little too high up for me. What does it mean and how can I fix it, as it slows my boot down quite a bit?
This is to request the communities assistance with the following: As the title suggests, I am attempting to install 10.04.2 LTS on a PC equipped with an ASUS M2NPV-VM mobo and integral NVidia GeForce 6150 chipset/card and AMD dual processors.
Result: While the CD with the installation software loads, the splash screen comes up distorted and is displayed as several black and white horizontal bars. I have tried this with low end monitors with a VGA input with the same results. It appears to me as if though the video driver on the installation CD is not suitable for the mobo's chipset, but I may be wrong.
After having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?
I have a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit distribution of Ubuntu. The driver for the onboard video card wasn't supported beyond 8.04, so I didn't upgrade. Yesterday, I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card. I installed it and Ubuntu detected it and worked, but the resolution was limited to 640x480 (I think). I figured this would be corrected by updating, so I updated to 9.04. When I had to restart, the option to select which OS (Linux or Win) came up, I selected 9.04, and the ubuntu symbol came on. The status bar went to the end and the screen turned black, flickered 5 times, turned black and stopped progressing. The xorg.conf file is:
I have ubuntu 9.10 I have the ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3600 Series [1002:9598]video card. I dont know what it is but i want to enable extra visual effects. unfortunally a message stating "searching for drivers" appears, eventuall folowed by " Visual Effects can not be enabled" i think this is due to the drivers obviosly.
what are the drivers I need for linux (if any) for my specific video card? what do I need to do? also which video card are best fit for ubuntu/ linux? note: I dont know what it is, but originally when I first installed ubuntu I did something and the visual effects had worked had worked and up until recently i may or may not have of messed with any thing could i have of touched something
I am planning on upgrading the video card in my computer, an NVidia GeForce 9500 GT video card, to something that can handle at least 1600x1200 24-bit resolution without noticeable choppiness other "slow-downs" in graphic display. The card in question does have one gigabyte of RAM, but the type of memory it utilizes is DDR2 instead of something, i.e. DDR3 and above, with greater speed. Admittedly, the system in question is used for gaming as well as work. I want to stick with the NVidia brand because it has worked well for me, but I am not sure what would be the correct line of cards to use.
I've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.
How do I check what video driver I have installed in the terminal? Then how do I install or yum install it? I wanna do everything through command line soz.. I have an ATI 4850 I believe.
i installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?
What are the best drivers for Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS. I'm not 100% sure, but I heard the newest drivers have buggs and aren't 100% compatible with 10.10. I was wondering what the best version of Nvidia drivers would be to install on 10.10? apt-get install?
I was following this guide to install my nvidia drivers...[URL] but when I got to the step about checking to see if my card is supported I'm to check here...[URL] I don't see my card anywhere in this list So I kept reading and found this posting ... [URL] and it says that it is support under the geforce 200 ... The last time that I installed this driver my X session quit working ... I was able to ssh back into the laptop and undo the driver install so now i'm a little gun shy about trying it again...
I just installed a fresh copy of unbuntu 10.04 and downloaded the lastest drivers for my video card but when double click the file, i get a message that says "could not open file/home/desktop name/download/n...nux-86-96.43.16-pkg1.run."Anyone know why this is happening? A friend told me to try to run them in terminal so when i opened the drivers with terminal I get a message saying "error: nvida-installer must be run as root"
I have bought asus notebook with nvidia geforce GT 320m, and installed ubuntu 9.10 notebook remix, and i can't found any drivers for video card, iam new in linux.
I updated my video card drivers, but when I boot back up, I have no GUI and am given a terminal because it does not recognize the drivers. I have already changed "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" .

I have installed Fedora 8 on my laptop. My laptop has a " Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI " wireless Card. I want to get the wireless working. I did an 'lsmod' and I found that the modules for this card is not installed. I tried to start Network Manager, but network manager cannot connect to wireless but it cant. How and where can I get the drivers for this and how do I install those modules. My laptop is a Dell vostro 1400.
I was messing around with Ubuntu trying to make somethings work. Then i rebooted ,and I wasn't able to turn on Visual Effects. So I'm guessing that I must have replaced my video card driver with a non-compatible one or just removed it without knowing. So I was wondering "How Can I Switch Back To The Video Card Driver Ubuntu Came With?" Without reinstalling Ubuntu? Since I was able to at least switch on Visual Effects with it.
I did not find my graphics card in the HCL/Nvidia video cards thread. I looked in YaST for drivers & found none. My desktop pc freezes after the system loads so I cannot use my system. I understand about the level '3' boot option for tty input. How would I download/run the nvidia installer from tty?
I just installed a nvidia TNT2 m64 video card on my AMD 2500+ Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on Gnome 2.30.2. (yeah, it's old). I've tried to enable the drivers for a Nvidia 8400GS video card on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried change desktop background > visual effects. It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I reinstalled my computer with Ubuntu 10.10 and the resolution was fine. I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on today it's back to everything being huge and the screen resolution being 640 x 480. Then when I try to change it, it says my video card isn't supported. Where should I get the drivers for the video card R7 260X to run on Debian Wheezy? Because it cant be from amd site, considering that I installed from their site, but when running apt-get check is said to me that there was the missing dependence fglrx-core..I also couldn't remove it, because it had other unmet dependencies... After long time attempting to solve on my own I just got enough pissed that I formatted the machine.Now I am asking here to find out what is the best practices when installing those drivers, because clearly I wasn't doing it right...
NOTICE: Some very old nVidia Video Cards from more than 9 years ago might not work with this way, but just try this method because you'll see if there's a driver available for your video card in Fedora or not.
I have been noticing that it was hard to set up my own NVidia video card, and alot of other people shared the same problem as I had. I have been experimenting with some things, and here's what I did to solve it.
It's fairly easy, anyone can do this. Read and follow these instructions:
Install all updates. Although it seems unimportant, it really is.
Go to [url] and follow the instructions to install the free and nonfree repositories
Go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software
Search the following: nv
Click everything which has to do with NVidia. Do not check the checkboxes yet, but read the descriptions. If you've found your video card in the description, check the checkbox at the left of the title.
Install the drivers by clicking "Apply" at the bottom of your screen.
After installing, go to Applications > System Tools > nVidia Display Settings
Set the properties of your video card, such as TwinView or higher screen resolutions.
After you've set it up, click Apply to preview your settings. Change some settings if you like, and then click Apply when you're done. DO NOT EXIT YET!
Click "Save to X Confguration File, but do NOT save the file. Click "Show preview..." and copy the text in the preview.
Go to Applications > System Tools > Terminal and type "su". Press Enter and enter the root password.
Now type:

Select all of the text in the document and delete it. Then, paste the text of the "Save X Configuration" window into the text editor.
Exit out of the terminal.
Exit out of the nVidia Display Settings application. Do not save anything from this application.
Log out and log back in to see the changes.
If you want to change some settings, repeat steps 7 - 16.
So after I installed the ATI Radeon 3400 series video card in my machine, the Xserver cant start! after it loads, it takes me to the init 3. When I tried startx, the screens either go blank or doesnt let me.

I wanted dual monitors but now I cant even get one. The xwindows doesnt appear.
Things I tried: 1. Deleted the xorg.conf and reconfigured (didnt work). 2. sax2 -r -m 0=versa (didnt work) 3. reconfigured the ATI radeon driver from init 3 (didnt work) 4. copy and paste the oold version of xorg.conf (didnt work) 5. tried to run set apt or dpkg-reconfigure command (commands not found) 6. tried xconfig and prompt the best I coudl (didnt work). 7. aticonfig commands (As shown in website) (also didnt work)
I have the live CD to run it from there but I dont know what to do once I get to the terminal.
Is there any way I can revert to previous configuration since the ATI driver gives me some problems? Like a restore function in windows?
How or what files I should change for the X-server to run properly (is there any other file than xorg.conf?....)
The monitors I have: 2009W Dell Monitor 1398 Dell Monitor (I wan to get the dual exntended monitor but it seems to gave me only the mirror image, thats why I tried to reconfigure the video card)
