Hardware :: Cannot Install Drivers On Video Card That Enable Visual Effects

I have ubuntu 9.10 I have the ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3600 Series [1002:9598]video card. I dont know what it is but i want to enable extra visual effects. unfortunally a message stating "searching for drivers" appears, eventuall folowed by " Visual Effects can not be enabled" i think this is due to the drivers obviosly.
what are the drivers I need for linux (if any) for my specific video card? what do I need to do? also which video card are best fit for ubuntu/ linux? note: I dont know what it is, but originally when I first installed ubuntu I did something and the visual effects had worked had worked and up until recently i may or may not have of messed with any thing could i have of touched something
I recently installed fedora 14 on my Asus laptop with Nvidia GEForce 130m Cuda Video card. I installed the nvidia drivers, but when I go to configure any sort of visual effects in systemsettings it says Code: Your hardware cannot support visual effects due to the following problem: The problem is that it gives no problems for me to fix! How can I find out what the issue is?
I want to enable extra visual effects on my Laptop but when I select it a windows pops up saying 'Desktop Effects could not be enabled' explain it in dummies terms i am 14 and just learning the basics of linux
I installed a PCI graphics card "ATI RV280 5960" but it still says desktop effects cannot be enabled. What do i need to install/do to get that to work?

The card itself (on a sticker) says it's a Radeon 9250.
I just got a new graphics card (Well, I guess you shouldn't call it a graphics card, it's more of a workstation card) Anyway, the card is the PNY Nvidia Quadro FX 580 and I installed the proper drivers for it (Nvidia 177) But, I'm encountering a problem with enabling the visual effects.Everything was running fine and I was able to use the effects until I enabled "Xinerama" two support both my monitors. Xinerama works fine, but the Visual Effects were reverted back to "None." When I click on "Extra" it searches for graphics drivers then tells me that I should switch to the graphics driver for my on-board graphics (ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver).
The ironic thing is that in the description for the Nvidia 177 driver it says "If you wish to enable desktop effects, this driver is required." It does not say that on the board graphics driver. Any suggestions? I want to start feeling like an Ubuntu user again rather than a windows user.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my system. Upgraded the NVidia driver to the latest one on the NVidia website: 270.41.19 to see if it corrected a problem of when VEs were enable (even Normal not Extra), I got a white or blank screen. I could tell the system was still working because I got the text info bubbles when I moved the mouse; but when I open an app or a window, the screen was blank. After updating the driver; I can see a sharper and faster rendering image but when I enable the VEs I still get the blank screen.
I am trying to do some video tutorials at [uRL] on Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 this is the first edition to require desktop effects. When I install it in the VM it isn't enabled right away. when I go to enable it I ran in to the problem that I couldn't find appearance. When I opened appearance from the terminal I couldn't enable Visual effects because mutter is running. How do I drop to the base terminal and enable visual effects?

I was using a NVIDIA 7200GS on Ubuntu 10.04 (compiz+emerald+cairo) but it broken for over-temperature so I use my onboard graphpic intel 945G now.
I installed the intel drivers but couldnt enable Visual Effects. So I decided install Ubuntu 10.10 after that everything was Ok. I could enable Visual Effects and use compiz+emerald.
I added app x-updates [URL] and I updated my ubuntu. The kernel was updated. After that when I reboot ubuntu the visual effects was disable.
I cant enable Visual Effects on Ubuntu 10.10 with my onboard graphic card intel 945G.
When I try to enable, the ubuntu searches video drivers but It doesn't find anything. Dont understand why it searches drivers.

I've just finished my new build and installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.I have in it an MSI N8400GS D512D3H (NVidia Geforce 8400GS) which I thought would work for Ubuntu. After installing Ubuntu the visual effects are disabled, can't even get "Normal" settings in the Appearance dialogue. Updates have all been installed. Apt has been updated. "Hardware Drivers" screen draws a blank. No proprietary drivers listed at all. First time I've actually used a Graphics Card in an Ubuntu install.
I have a problem and i hope you can help me fix this. the problem is that when i want to enable the visual effects by system>preferences>apearance and i select the visual effects nothing happends and i get a box that says could not enable the visual effects. soo my question is wath is wrong? do i need to download something? or can i not use it i have a integraded grhaphics card a x3100 its a dell inspiron 1525

I've tried to enable the drivers for a Nvidia 8400GS video card on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried change desktop background > visual effects. It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!
I have just installed the new Ubuntu and have most things working on my Hp 6735s, i have beed playing around and find that i cannot change the Visual effects, it looks for the drivers and doesnt find them, could you please advise what i need to do to get this working. The graphics card i believe is a ATI Radoen 3200. Any help would be great, also dumb it down for me as i have been so used to windows im not that up on terminology of everything.
I'm using a Gateway LT3103u running a dual boot of Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 (separate partitions) and ever since I've started using Ubuntu (last October) I've had persistent graphic card problems.
My graphics card is the ATI Radeon X1270.
Right now I can't use any visual effects because of I do the screen spazzes out and becomes unusable. This isn't a big deal for me since I don't use them but I figured it's relevant to the problem.
Even with visual effects off I still have problems and at times parts of the menu will stay on the screen in a little box which covers any windows that open beneath it. The only way to get rid of it is to turn visual effects on so the screen resets then hit use previous settings.
I'm trying to enable the Nvidia drivers so I can use the Desktop effects and play games but when I go to Systen -->Administration-->Hardware drivers It say that There are no proprietary drivers in use. install the Nvidia driver?

3. When booting, I get a message saying something like "intel_ips can't find i915 symbols, so graphics turbo is disabled". When googling for this, I see this is a kernel related issue. Since I don't have any understandings of kernels, I thought this is a little too high up for me. What does it mean and how can I fix it, as it slows my boot down quite a bit?
Well, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens
After having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?
I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.
i installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?
I'm currently running 10.04, when I went to go turn on visual effects it gave me a prompt to install an nVidia driver, after installation was complete it said I had to restart. When I start it up the screen flickers from being on and off, it then finally stops at being on but nothing shows up. Please help. My graphics card is nVidia G210M. Sony Vaio.
I am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

im using the ubuntu distro and when i goto the visual effects tab and click on normal or extra, it says "desktop effects could not be enabled" also, i have Two hdd's, a 100GB that has windows 7 and ubuntu. and a 250GB that has Windows XP. GRUB didnt notice windows xp though, so its not a boot option.
I have a Geforce 9300 GS installed in my machine I am using 64 bit Gnome with a 64 bit system I downloaded this: Now my video won't show any effects and the Nvidia card won't work? This doesn't make any sense. Frustration to the max. I should have stayed with Fedora 10 at least it worked with downloadable drivers.
