Ubuntu Installation :: Xubuntu 10.04 With My Evga Geforce 6200 Video Card?

i am having trouble installing xubuntu 10.04 with my evga geforce 6200 video card. My motherboard has the onboard intel 845g? card. The computer will not read the live cd with the video card installed. it hangs on the splash screen right after choosing " try without installing" i have tried nomodeset but that dose not help. I have no problems installing with the video card removed. My computer i a hp pavilion a647c.
I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.
one of my Evga GeForce 9500 GT's fan started acting up today. It is wobbling, vibrating loudly, and not spinning at full speed. And while I believe the card is still under warranty, I'd rather just buy a new fan and put it inmyself avoiding the hassle of sending it back and waiting for a replacement (and most likely refurbished) one. That being said, does anyone know where I could buy just the fan? Google has turned up nothing so far but the numbers on the fan are A4010-45LB-2UN-C1 and FA7C0412MA-SBNNA but I have no idea what these numbers are; the manufacturer is Cooler Master.
I have a bit of a problem with the proprietary nvidia driver which I installed as a binary on suse 11.3, when I run the nvidia-settings gui it does not give any widescreen display modes as options. My monitor is an Acer x193w which will do 1440x900 but there is no option for that. The monitor is just listed as a generic CRT, and only 4x3 display modes are given. My card is a PNY Geforce 6200 AGP 512MB.
I have a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit distribution of Ubuntu. The driver for the onboard video card wasn't supported beyond 8.04, so I didn't upgrade. Yesterday, I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card. I installed it and Ubuntu detected it and worked, but the resolution was limited to 640x480 (I think). I figured this would be corrected by updating, so I updated to 9.04. When I had to restart, the option to select which OS (Linux or Win) came up, I selected 9.04, and the ubuntu symbol came on. The status bar went to the end and the screen turned black, flickered 5 times, turned black and stopped progressing. The xorg.conf file is:
I am planning on upgrading the video card in my computer, an NVidia GeForce 9500 GT video card, to something that can handle at least 1600x1200 24-bit resolution without noticeable choppiness other "slow-downs" in graphic display. The card in question does have one gigabyte of RAM, but the type of memory it utilizes is DDR2 instead of something, i.e. DDR3 and above, with greater speed. Admittedly, the system in question is used for gaming as well as work. I want to stick with the NVidia brand because it has worked well for me, but I am not sure what would be the correct line of cards to use.
This is to request the communities assistance with the following: As the title suggests, I am attempting to install 10.04.2 LTS on a PC equipped with an ASUS M2NPV-VM mobo and integral NVidia GeForce 6150 chipset/card and AMD dual processors.
Result: While the CD with the installation software loads, the splash screen comes up distorted and is displayed as several black and white horizontal bars. I have tried this with low end monitors with a VGA input with the same results. It appears to me as if though the video driver on the installation CD is not suitable for the mobo's chipset, but I may be wrong.
I recently bought a video card for my pc. I had it running pretty nicely on Ubuntu10.10, I started windows and later restarted and after that it wouldn't get past the Graphic cards bios. this is rather odd isn't it? I suspect it maybe dead or that my motherboard bios is stuffed but i reset that too and it still wont go.. The specs are Pentium4 Proccesor 1gb ram motherboard 661gx-m7 Nvidia GeForce FX5200 DDr128mb
Would ubuntu 64bt recognise the 48gb on the of memory available on that motherboard,,, and would it recognise the the 2 CPU's that are installed on that motherboard.
I recently installed Xubuntu on my old P3 laptop (Compaq Armada E500 if anyone is familiar). The laptop is a bit old, so both wired and wireless networking is done via PCMCIA cards. I have 2 cards installed, one for each purpose. I can't find the dongle for the wired card right now, so I am trying to use the wireless card. I am able to find the network I want to connect to, and type in the password since the network is secured. It tries to connect but then pops up again asking for the password (I know it is correct). Is this card supported by linux/compatible? I tried finding drivers online but the sites that had drivers were down.
I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Built a custom pc using a Gigabyte mobo and amd processor. Mobo has onboard video. Ubuntu Maverick installs fine using on board video but when I put in the Nvidia Geforce GT 240 I get either no video or scrambled video. I've tried disabling the on board video and still no luck. I've also tried to install nvidia drivers first, and will get it to work but video is not crisp and will not show all of the screen.
I installed a zotac geforce 210 PCI-E card. I made the necessary bios setting for display.
After I turn on the machine I see just the initial HP Invent screen. The boot process is not happening.
Do I need to install some drivers before hand while I am connected to my onboard display? The only CD I have is for Windows drivers so not sure what I can download.
I cannot get the restricted Nvidia drivers or the Nouveau drivers to work completely. If the Nouveau drivers are being used (after an "apt-get purge nvidia-*"), the text mode seems to work ok, but the X nouveau driver acts as if it cannot recognize the card. The only way I can get into X is to make sure I have the "nv" driver in the xorg.conf. I can then get into X normally.
If I install nvidia-current, the machine will just lock up at the splash screen. The Xorg.0.log file is zero bytes. I've checked and installing nvidia-current properly blacklists the nouveau drivers and I see no evidence in the messages file that the nouveau drivers tried to load in text mode. In fact, it shows the nvidia driver loading for console mode. I've tried the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel option as well, but that doesn't do anything. This is a fairly new nvidia card, maybe only a couple months old. I think it's been out for quite some time though. But it was working fine under Karmic with the restricted drivers. I really want to get this working as I need full support of the video card.
I have thrown together a frankenstein of spare parts to stream video onto my TV. The GPU is a NX6800GS (geforce 6800). I have used the restricted driver tool to intsal the recommended driver. The VGA output works fine. My problem is that when using the nvidia tool to set up my TV through S-Video on the graphics card, the TV is not detected. This puts me at a dead end, as every how to guide on this forum assumes the nvidia control panel can detect the TV. Can i force video to play over the S-Video port? Do i need some magical unicorn drivers for the card? Any help is appreciated (even a simple "this setup will never work").
I've been trying a bunch of different solutions to getthis fixed. Let me give you the details: I'm currently on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I have a Geforce FX 5200 graphics card and I have the nvidia proprietary drivers installed (version 96, I tried 173 as well but there's doesn't seem to be a difference).
My monitors native resolution is 1680x1050 but since my graphics card cannot handle that resolution I use 1280x1024. I've had this resolution working before on Ubuntu as well as Windows with the same graphics card. My problem is that in nvidia-control, the list of resolutions does not include 1280x1024, and the closest to that is 1280x900 which is not supported by my monitor. So the only tolerable resolution I can get is 1024x768.. if you've used this resolution then you know that it is not tolerable for long. So I tried to force the resolution by using xorg.conf.. Here it is:

For some reason this isn't forcing 1280x1024.. I'm still in 1024x768 and it still doesn't list it in nvidia-control.. What's weird is that on the previous release (Jaunty or Hardy) this xorg.conf worked fined and got me my 1280x1024.
anyone knows a driver for nvidia's GeForce GT 440 1GB card.I have installed the nvidia swat-x/ubuntu-x driver, it works somewhat but the performance is really bad.
My 4 yr old Dell XPS 400 has a nVidia GeForce 7300 LE card which won't run Unity as is. How do I determine without actually attempting to install 11.04 if there is an updated driver available that will allow this machine to run Unity?

I am running OpenSuse 11.4, previously with GNOME 3 but on reinstall of the OS I have reverted back to GNOME 2 and I only want to update once this mess is out of the way.I'm doing a bit of a project, and one of the requirements is that I be able to connect to my TV. I made my own S Video to RCA cable to run out of my PC and into the TV. I tested that on the day I made it with a Windows laptop, worked fine.
Beforehand, my computer was running out of the DVI port into a monitor perfectly, so I can safely assume it is not my graphics card. When I plugged my S Video to RCA cable in, everything looked fine at boot but when it came to booting OpenSuse, X.org failed to start, although I wasn't around to see the error message (I now know that it was "x server failed maximum number of times" or something of that description). I tried startx on the command line only to get a "no screens found" error or something similar. The only way I could get it to successfully start was to revert to the xorg.conf.install file, which wasn't ideal and GNOME 3 had to run in fallback mode.
I did not like the fact that my graphics card wasn't running as well as it could. Nevertheless, I tested a few things, and found that a little Java program with LWJGL could not run, Xlib threw this error at meXlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0"So xorg.conf.install is no longer an option. I tried a variety of other troubleshooting options, first recommended by the OpenSuse wiki and then all sorts of xorg.conf edits. I've tried running nvidia-xconfig but the configuration it gives me the same error, I have tried X -configure, only to get the same error.
As a last resort I reinstalled OpenSuse 11.4 hoping that its automatic configuration would solve the problem. It sort of did. Now when I run anything when my xorg.conf file is not xorg.conf.install it successfully starts X.org the first time, and if I shut down and reboot within 10 minutes of it shutting down, X.org refuses to start. I did more searching around and found that I could specify S Video out through xorg.conf. I went back to the xorg.conf.d directory by deleting my xorg.conf file and changed my xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf to this
Which I honestly thought would work, but I got the same error again. That's about the end of my story, if you want any more info just ask. I think it's a bit odd that no matter what I change my xorg.conf/xorg.conf.d files to I always get the same error and not a plethora of different ones.
I seem to be having trouble watching video on my new debian lenny system. I installed the nvidia drivers correctly and I get the splash screen and have decent 3D performance but you tube is a real eye ache to watch with fits and jumps all the time. Is there something I am missing with regards to configuring this device.

I have the latest everything (kernel, nvidia drivers and kde) and there seems to be a problem in that if I click on the K menu, or grouped windows in the taskbar, or anything in the notification area which causes the computer to freeze for 7 - 12 seconds. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
It's an AMD 64 dual core with a GeForce 210 pci-x graphics card. The issue happens either with out without compositing.
Working on a friend's PC, which was previously running XP and got a very nasty virus infection. I convinced him to try Ubuntu, showed him the interface running on my own machine and he was hooked. Backed up all his data to network, completely erased the hard disk and install Ubuntu. Sounds easy, right?
Installed 9.10, it didn't detect the video card and xorg.conf was missing from /etc/X11. After some messing around trying to get it to work, I realised that the sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg command wasn't working properly and didn't produce the menu shown in the screenshots. After some digging I found that this was a bug in 9.10, so to make the job easier, I wiped the drive again and started again on 9.04.
With 9.04, at least the xorg.conf file was there, but had no entries under configured video device. I tried adding "vesa", "via", "openchrome" (all on separate attempts), all to no avail. I retried the dpkg -reconfigure command above. still no menu.
Now several days into this "easy" install, I rolled back to the LTS release (8.04 - hardy) and installed that instead. Still no video card detection, and resolution is obstinately stuck at 800x600. Trying to install from a 10.04.1 Lucid LiveCD. The computer is pretty old but has Windows XP installed on it currently, which runs. (So it can't be that old!) I boot up and press F6 and I get the screen. When i try to install I get the Ubuntu logo with the 5 white/red dots and there is movement. The activity light on the CD drive flashes regularly and chugs along. At a certain point the screen attempts to change resolution or something and it goes all cyan and messed up. I assume that this is at the point where it attempts to load the graphical disk partition utility or whatever. Is there a way to pass a command line option at the install menu to make it a text only install or at a lower resolution? I'm not sure if it's trying to jump to the default IDID (or whatever it's called) resolution of the LCD monitor, since the video card may not support that resolution or something. (Because the video card is much older than the monitor).
I recently upgraded to Lucid from Karmic and shortly before the release upgraded from a geforce 8400gs to my geforce GT240 and noticed no difference on Karmic. I read somewhere that the capability of video cards would be applied further with Lucid. Since installing Lucid I've noticed a severely reduced sharpness and severely increased contrast, changing the contrast in X server has no effect. My hardware driver is activated but not in use and no online fix I've attempted has been successful in resolving the issue. Is it possible to use a gt240 on lucid with no hassle and is there any way I can maximize my video cards capabilities?

My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.
The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:
We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.
My friend just recently gave me an Nvidea Geforce 4 64mb, and it is supposed to be better than my ATI x700 Pro. I was wondering if there was openGL support for this card, and how do i replace it with my ATI card?
Is there anything special I need to do to use this card in conjunction with Fedora 14? It's been acting a little strange lately. Also I think the card may have some type of 3D support although I'm not entirely sure on that.
I did not find my graphics card in the HCL/Nvidia video cards thread. I looked in YaST for drivers & found none. My desktop pc freezes after the system loads so I cannot use my system. I understand about the level '3' boot option for tty input. How would I download/run the nvidia installer from tty?
