Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu 11.04 32bit Fails To Boot After Repeated Installs?

May 1, 2011

I made a post in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10753227 but I guess it's closed.I'm having the same issue. I've installed Kubuntu 11.04 32bit twice now. Both times it doesn't do anything when it reboots. No output to the screen. When I boot to the LiveCD and chroot or simply mount the /dev/sda device and run sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdaIt says grub installs successfully, but it doesn't fix the problem.

Ubuntu :: KUbuntu 10.04 Installs Fine, But Hangs On Next Boot?

Jul 5, 2010

coming from the Windows world recently decided to give Linux a try and with it, she decided to go with KUbuntu. I had her go at it under VMWare so she could have something to fall back on while learning Linux. Problem is after installing KUbuntu we can no longer get back into it as the system locks up while it is trying to boot. All that is seen on the screen is the KUbuntu bootup logo screen and it stays there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu V9.1 Fails To Boot After Fresh Install And Display Anomalies At The Desktop

Mar 22, 2010

The last version a Linux I had was Mandrake v9.1. However, in looking to get the latest/greatest Linux I downloaded Ubuntu and Kubuntu. After installing Kubuntu the system reboots and fails to boot into the OS. After the P.O.S.T all I get a the word "GRUB". There is no response to any keys with the exception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am temporarily able to get passed the boot problem if I boot from the CD and choose boot from primary hard menu option. I'm not sure how to fix the boot up problem and could use some advice. However, using the CD to boot up the hard drives installation leads me to my next problem.

While in a desktop session I am unable to drag windows by their title bar. When attempting to drag a window, the desktop becomes covered with parts of the original window spreading all over the screen in multiple directions. It looks like a kaleidoscope or bad acid trip image. I suspect the video anomalies might be configuration related or improper driver. Again guidance would be greatly appreciated here.

I have a good 'ole Matrox MGA Millenium card installed into a P4 1.8ghz system, with 512 MB ram. The hard drive originally had an old install of Mandrake v9.1, but all of the partitions were wiped and I created 3 new partitions:

- /dev/sda1 20GB Bootable/Primary Partition EXT4 (Unbuntu mounted at /)
- /dev/sda2 18GB Primary EXT4 (Kubuntu mounted at /mnt/Ubuntu_dsktop_91)
- /dev/sda3 2GB Swap space

My intent was to install Ubuntu on the 2nd primary partition and be able to switch between them. However, I tried installed Ubuntu on the first partition (reformatted of course) and I encounter the same boot problem and display problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu LiveCD Fails But CD Works

Jun 20, 2010

I am able to boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD fine, but the Kubuntu CD fails to boot. Trying to run Kubuntu sends me to a command line and after the first three steps of the install option I am again sent to a command the line. I have burnt and verified several Kubuntu CDs and each time I get this result. I am running Ubuntu, but I would like a fresh install of Kubuntu (I would rather not just install kubuntu-desktop).

Fedora Installation :: F10 Installs But Will Not Boot?

Apr 21, 2009

I am having a problem getting F10 to boot after install.I downloaded the DVD, burned it and installed from it. No errors during the installation but when I go to reboot the system comes up saying:"VolGroup00 not foundUnable to access resume device (/dev/volgroup00/logvol01)Mount: error mounting /dev/root/ on /sysroot as ext3:h file or directory"This is being installed into an AMD Opteron Blade with an Adaptec SC2000 controller card, 4 SCSI disks configured in a RAID 5 array.I gather it's looking at the wrong device for a boot track/loader, but not sure how to fix thisAny ideas? I figured if it found it during install it should find it during boot but that doesn't seem to be the case

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Installs Successfully But Does Not Boot Upon Reboot

May 19, 2010

Recently I have built an old pc using bits and bobs that have been collecting in the garage for years and decided to try and turn it into a file server, and to get some experience in networking etc. Now I had a choice of 2 motherboards for the system:

1.)gigabyte ga-8siml
2.)elitegroup l7s7a2

I first built the pc using the gigabyte board, install was successful and ubuntu server booted on restart. The only problem was, there is no onboard lan on the board and the only spare wireless pci card I found was completely frazzled. Rather than buying a new wifi card to get the system running, I thought I would try the other motherboard since this had onboard lan. The elitegroup motherboard however does not have onboard vga, so I dug out an old agp ati radeon 9200se 128m ddr tvo graphics card and plugged her in. The install went fine, but after a restart, I'm left with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.

If I hold down 'shift' for long enough I can bring up the grub menu, but if I select anything I get no signal on the monitor. After a while on the blinking cursor screen the monitor will time out to no signal on its own. I have tried the installation using different combinations of the options given by F6 of the first installation screen but to no avail. I have also tried installing the generic kernel as opposed to the generic-pae.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Natty Fails - Kubuntu - Xubuntu Installed

Apr 29, 2011

I have a problem, because installation of ubuntu 11.04 will fail if I try to.

I have also Kubuntu and Xubuntu installed, which I regret a lot because I cannot uninstall them as well...

The problem is that I have installed a one-time-activation proprietary software so a fresh install is no option.

The error when upgrading is, that "xubuntu-desktop" cannot be marked for upgrade!

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot In 10.04. 32bit

May 4, 2010

I've made a fresh install with the alternate cd, because for same strange reason I was unable to boot into the live CD.

After the instalation, I have rebooted the PC and under the log in screen of ubuntu 10.04, was a path or line of text describing an error (can't remember the type of error.)

Then the line disappeared, and i was able to log in normally.

Everything looked fine, after some testing and tweaking of the new system, I tried to reboot (to test). I choose ubuntu 10.04 in grub manager, and then there was just a sea of code on a black screen.

The previous release of ubuntu worked well on my PC

Ubuntu :: Repeated, Changing Boot In Lucid?

Sep 23, 2010

after having some boot issues not so long ago, i was pointed in the direction of rescatux, which solved my problem at the time. now im having a number of other issues. i am dual booting isodora mint and lucid ubuntu.when my lucid distro is working, it often becomes totally unresponsive during everyday tasks and when i go to restart (or any of the other options) from the shut down menu, i get the window appearing blank.upon rebooting (by pressing ENTER, which works even though there are no buttons within the window), it tells me to either insert boot media or there is a grub failure. this happens almost every session on the computer.

on the times when it says 'insert boot media', generally speaking turning it off for an extended period tends to work. the times when a grub failure occurs, going through rescatux's rescap leads to no other partitions being identified at least 90% of the time.is this something that anyone recognizes the signs for and can offer me a solution? or does this sound like an intermittent hardware problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Will 64bit Flash Drive Then Boot Using A 32bit PC?

Oct 12, 2010

I am trying to use the usb startup creator to make a xubuntu 10.10 ( with downloaded .iso) startup disk to a 2gb flash drive. I formatted the drive to ext4, and when I start the usb creator I get this error: "Failed to install the bootloader."

1. Should I have formatted the drive to ext4? In the usb creator instructions the author used ext3 as an example.
2. I am using the 64bit .iso file. I am trying to make the drive from a 64bit pc running ubuntu 10.04 (64bit).
3. If I can get this to work, will the 64bit flash drive then boot using a 32bit pc? (I wouldn't want to install it, but rather boot to use as a portable OS.)

Fedora Installation :: Take The 686MB 32bit Iso Image And Put It On A 2GB Usb Drive And Boot / Install?

Feb 5, 2011

i have been working with computers since the age of 11 "22 now" and have taught myself everything i know, from computer repair & networking to Web design, music production and Graphics design, using programs like photoshop, dreamweaver, sony acid, i learned it all myself, anyways that's just a little insight!!!

OK so here is my problem, i have an OLD P4 2.8 GHZ PC with 512MB ram, last year i was able to burn i believe fedora 9 to a CD and install it on this PC before i removed the drive to use as an external drive. "Dont know where the CD went"

I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!

Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!

Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.

Installation :: Ubuntu Won't Boot From Live CD But Kubuntu Will?

Dec 23, 2010

I'm trying to run Ubuntu on an old laptop, a Gateway M520S-H2. The Kubuntu 10.10 live CD runs fine. Right away the menu comes up allowing you to check the CD, try it, or install it, and so on. But the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD, it shows "Ubuntu" on the screen in a logo-ish way for several minutes, then the "Ubuntu" deteriorates in an unhealthy looking way, then the screen just sits there blank forever.

So then I tried an Ubuntu live DVD. Same things. I checked both the CD and DVD for errors, the DVD with Ubuntu's checker and the CD after I burned it. Also, both disc work on another computer.

Does anyone have any idea why Ubuntu live CD doesn't work on this system while Kubuntu does? Must it be something with the GUI? DO you think I'd have more luck with Ubuntu 10.10? (worth a try I guess...)

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot XP And Kubuntu 10.10 GRUB?

Nov 20, 2010

My system has 2 hard drives, a 400gb master and a 250gb slave. sda (my main 400gb Windows drive) has XP on it. The slave (sdb) has 3 partitions:

sdb1 is for my downloads (NTFS ~180gb)
sdb2 has Kubuntu 8.10 installed (ext3, 60gb)
and sdb3 is the swap (3gb).

I want to do a destructive upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 - I have the CD already and burnt. I know I have to select the partitions manually due to the complicated setup, I know I need to format the sdb2 partition to ext4, mount point /, and the swap can stay the same. On which hard drive should I install the bootloader? I can't remember where it is installed now, all I know is I had a lot of problems with the install.

Ubuntu Installation :: WUBI + Kubuntu-desktop Wrecks Boot?

On my MS Vista 64bit machine, I installed Ubuntu through WUBI (some time in 2010) and was happily booting one or the other as needed. Then I added kubuntu-desktop (using Synaptic). Now, when I reboot, the Windows Boot Manager still offers Vista and Ubuntu as boot options. But Ubuntu, rather than boot, goes to a grub shell. I found a GrubHowto that includes "Manual boot into a Linux OS" - but it seems to suggest that clean Karmic installs use Grub2 and the Howto instructions apply only to Grub. I don't know if the WUBI install was Karmic or something older. I don't know anything about using grub manually. And I don't know how to get my (k)ubuntu back!

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From Kubuntu 10.04 To 10.11: Keyboard And Mouse Lock At Boot

Nov 3, 2010

Running Landmarq Intel Atom DC330 Desktop I have just attempted to upgrade my desktop machine from Kubuntu 10.04 to Kubuntu 10.10. I used KpackageKit to do the upgrade which proceeded smoothly until the install packages phase, which seemed to complete and then repeat. I don't know the detail of what happened as I was out of the room.

The repeat almost completed, but then I got a set of error messages, which basically told me that KpackageKit was unable to install the upgraded packages. I closed KpackageKit, and closed the machine and tried a reboot. This time, I got as far as the splash screen, but although the cursor flashes, I can't type anything in the password box. In addition, the mouse pointer won't move. Using a different wireless mouse works, but I still can't type in a password.

However, the command ctrl+alt+sysrq+RSEIUB works, so the machine is accepting some keyboard input. I also know from using a live disc that my home directory is intact. I would like to revert to my 10.04 installation, and re-try an upgrade to 10.11 afterwards.

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot

May 27, 2011

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.

Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init!
Call trace:
get_empty_filp
panic

[code].....

Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):

G41M-S3
Intel G41 + ICH7 chipsets
CPU: LGA 775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme

[code]......

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Kubuntu Boot Screen At Startup - Low Graphics Mode By Default

For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.
