When I installed Kubuntu 11.04 using Wubi it did not load the Ubiquity installer like it normally does. Instead the boot screen (image attached so you know what I mean) remains displayed for the entire installation. The installation works fine once installed but I was wondering if this is normal or not?

On my MS Vista 64bit machine, I installed Ubuntu through WUBI (some time in 2010) and was happily booting one or the other as needed. Then I added kubuntu-desktop (using Synaptic).Now, when I reboot, the Windows Boot Manager still offers Vista and Ubuntu as boot options. But Ubuntu, rather than boot, goes to a grub shell. I found a GrubHowto that includes "Manual boot into a Linux OS" - but it seems to suggest that clean Karmic installs use Grub2 and the Howto instructions apply only to Grub. I don't know if the WUBI install was Karmic or something older. I don't know anything about using grub manually.And I don't know how to get my (k)ubuntu back!
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe wubi installer copied files successfully and asked for reboot. After booting into Xubuntu the flashing logo appeared for a minute. And then the screen looked as if it was trying to show something but could not and flickered and then became dark this continued till half an hour and then I pressed Alt+Ctrl+Del.I tried all the modes but to no avail, only the last mode with command line was working. But it was not helpful for me becoz I dont know most of the commands.When I tried "Verbose Mode" as directed by the WubiGuide - Ubuntu Wiki, CTRL+ALT+F2 did not work when the installer stopped.The computer I use is assembled with Intel pentium 4, VIA chipset and Mercury(Kobian) motherboard.

I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get Debian+Mate running on my laptop, with no success. I have not yet used Linux, but I do wish to climb out of the Window, and the Live session seems ideal to get a feel for Debian before finally abandoning Windows.
I got the Debian+Mate ISO file from the Debian website, and created a bootable USB stick. (Note : I have done this several times, getting new ISOs, and using Unetbootin, Universal USB Installer, and Linux Live installer; the result is always the same.)
When I boot the USB drive, all appears good at first. I get to the Debian (or Mate?) screen which is a pale jade green with a white squiggle in the middle region, with a panel at the top; this shows at left three options - applications, places, and system; and at right the correct time, a sound symbol,the wifi symbol, and a battery indicator. At the left of the screen in vertical arrangement there are 4 icons labelled computer, users home, install Debian Sid, and trash. On the bottom panel, at left there is a "button" for "click to hide all windows & show desktop", and at right 4 squares for workspaces.
There are also (temporary) windows that inform me that the battery is no good (I run on mains), and that there is no wifi connection established. These windows disappear in a minute or so.
The cursor moves ok. The only actions that it creates are the information drop-down texts that tell me what the headings mean - e.g. no connections when I hover the cursor above the wifi connections symbol.
But whatever I attempt to do - selecting any of the options - nothing happens. Everything except the cursor appears to be dead.
The machine that I am using is an old laptop that I use as a second computer. It has a SIS Mirage 3 graphics engine, which I gather may be a problem. I also tried the same procedure with my fairly modern ASUS laptop (NVidia graphics) with exactly the same results; it seems that NVidia graphics may also be problematic, judging from some posts on the web. I have also tried Debian+Cinnamon, again with the same outcome.
Tried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.
I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?
I had Maverick installed and it was running nicely. I decided to upgrade to Natty Narwhal using the update manager. After doing that, Natty Narwhal wouldn't boot. I don't remember what the errors were. I decided to uninstall the wubi installation of Natty Narwhal and start over again. When I tried to install Natty Narwhal, I got the option to boot into Ubuntu, but when I did, I got the following errors:

Try (hd 0,1):NTFS5:no wubildr
Try (hd 0,2):NTFS5:no wubildr

Cannot Find GRLDR
Then it goes back to the boot screen. I'm trying to install with wubi on Windows 7. The upgrade must have messed something up, but you'd think it would be wiped out after uninstalling. Oh, yeah, I tried to install Linux Mint with mint4win and got similar errors. Anything I can do about this?
I'd like to install Fedora 14 64bit as a dual boot on an existing win 7 32bit system. When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

I recently installed ubuntu(32-bit 10.04) alongside windows 7 in my hp laptop(64-bit).When i installed all the updates available and restarted, a blank screen came after i chose to boot ubuntu.On pressing the power button, ubuntu closing animation appeared & it shut down.Is it because of my hardware drivers not supporting some updates.Do I have to re-install ubuntu..if yes, how do i remove it?..is deleting the ubuntu partion ok..how should i know which updates can be installed..also, are there any problems in running 32-bit version on a 64-bit laptop?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI already installed Wubi, and I liked it so much, I decided to fully install Ubuntu in a dual-boot with Vista.Well, that didn't go too well.. so I had to repair my computer with EasyBCD.Now, I'm trying to reinstall Wubi, but when I install and then re-boot, Windows loads without asking me to go to Ubuntu.I think there might be a problem here with EasyBCD.. when I install Wubi, then reboot and get back to Windows, EasyBCD doesn't show Ubuntu in the list of OS's.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.

My startup currently shows me the options Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.
I have a Dell dimension 8300 dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I installed BURG on it since I didnt like the text grub style. Problem is I cant change the splash screen no matter what I do, or changes I make. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my video card is an Nvidia card.
Originally the splash screen was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and some dots on it. After installing the plymouth themes, now it has changed to a blue screen with Kubuntu(?) on it... Id like to know whats wrong and how can I change the splash screen?
UPDATE: Ok I went to synaptic and saw plymouth.kubuntu-logo and kubuntu-text were installed and enabled (had litle ubuntu logo to the side). So I removed those 2 files then did a reboot. Now im back to the purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and the dots but I still cant change the splash screen...
I switched to Ubuntu about a month ago and have been loving every bit of it so far Today, I decided it was time to switch from having ubuntu installed within windows (through wubi) into creating a separate partition for itself.
I tried UN-installing using the wubi-uninstaller file but that did not work. Tried removing from the Add/Remove box in Windows 7 but neither wubi nor ubuntu were listed. SO I ended up manually deleting ubuntu from the C: and then using EasyBCD to remove Ubuntu from the boot menu. It may all sound great but I noticed that my hard disk is missing around 25GB of space. I even re-installed windows 7 but that hasn't changed this. It may well be that my hard disk is just old (~2 years) but I think it maybe because of an incorrect UN-install of wubi. Having read through forum posts around the interwebs all evening, this seems to be a problem that a few people share.
ps: I intend on installing Ubuntu again once this hard disk issue is resolved!
I currently have a successful dual boot of XP and Fedora 10. I need to re-format my windows partition and re-install XP. When I use the windows CD, it asks to boot from cd. I hit any key and the screen goes black and stays there. XP is the primary OS (C, fedora is the secondary (D. Any thoughts? I still need Windows, because I am just learning Fedora.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi just tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) on my Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop (with a Nvidia 8600M GT graphics card) with Wubi. A normal installation try resulted in an unreadable screen after boot (see attachment). I then managed to get the installation going by modifiing the boot options like shown in this HowTo: [URL] After the installation Wubi automatically rebooted the system without any prompt, so that i couldn't install the proper Nvidia drivers (is there a way to prevent wubi from doing that?) like described in the HowTo. After the reboot the graphics were messed up again.
Boot parameters like "text" "single" or vga=xxx didn't work, adding nomodest and nouveau.modset again didn't help either (I think "text" acutally brings up the console, but i just see an unreadable "blacker" screen than normal). Is there an boot option for grub to disable all nvidia related drivers and the graphical login manager and just show a text based console? Or force the gfx driver to be the same as in the installation process (which was perfect...native resolution, no graphical errors until the reboot) (i tried xforcevesa without any luck; nosplash and removing quiet/splash does work - the bootup process is readable, but as soon as the login manager starts its messed up again)
So yeah I want to transfer my system to the real Ubuntu. Problem is I can't boot into my Wubi Ubuntu cause I lost boot.

I can interact with this bar, it is blank and has a picture of a little man with a circle. Clicking on this does nothing, another says shutdown and reset, again clicking on it does nothing. I think the error occured when the computer got unplugged while updating.now before we get into all this GRUB and fancy stuff. I am completely new to linux. I installed this using a cd made from an iso image downloaded from the site. I did not use a windows loader. I don't even have windows anymore. I have all my personal information and data on here and would like it to be restored.I googled it and it says to go to recovery mode using GRUB, don't know how and don't know what grub is.:confus ed:
