Ubuntu :: KUbuntu 10.04 Installs Fine, But Hangs On Next Boot?
Jul 5, 2010
coming from the Windows world recently decided to give Linux a try and with it, she decided to go with KUbuntu. I had her go at it under VMWare so she could have something to fall back on while learning Linux. Problem is after installing KUbuntu we can no longer get back into it as the system locks up while it is trying to boot. All that is seen on the screen is the KUbuntu bootup logo screen and it stays there.

I made a post in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10753227 but I guess it's closed.I'm having the same issue. I've installed Kubuntu 11.04 32bit twice now. Both times it doesn't do anything when it reboots. No output to the screen. When I boot to the LiveCD and chroot or simply mount the /dev/sda device and run sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdaIt says grub installs successfully, but it doesn't fix the problem.

OpenSuse and rpm. Been using Debian for 7 years, so be gentle. I upgrade KDE 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 through the one-click install. After confirming some actions due to dependencies the install runs and in the end it said it failed to install a bunch of packages. These packages installed just fine and everything works as it should.
I was wondering if this happens more often, as it makes me kinda nervous if the installer warns me? Perhaps even more if it warns about things that aren't correct.

I've just installed Karmic 9.10 to a new 500GB sata in a friends PC and it boots and runs fine; internet and everything just works. Just reinstalled XP-SP3 to old 80GB pata drive in same PC, it boots ok, but has no sound, poor graphics and network is limited to 1394 - no ethernet.
I built this PC about 3 years ago and it had been running XP with SP2 then SP3 installed, and everything worked fine. So over the past day I have installed XP-SP3 (slipstreamed disc) in it 3 times now, then went back and tried XP-SP2 (earlier slipstreamed disc) twice with same result - no ethernet, poor graphics, no sound?
But it all works fine in Karmic?
I ran Karmic's disk utilities (Palimsest) on the old 80GB and it tested fine, no problems at all.
PC comprises Gigabyte M55plus-S3G m/board, AMD 3800+ 2.4Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM and a 64MB NVidia graphics card (can't recall model)
Is it possible MS built 'crippleware' in to XP, or could there be a hardware problem that Karmic didn't detect (doubt it)
Karmic is going to be the main OS now, so I don't think the loss of XP is a problem, but friend still wanted to be able to boot XP, even though XP is installed in Virtualbox in Karmic (I did this by importing a previously saved XP 'appliance').

I'm trying to install opensuse using the internet install feature. After the loading linux kernel screen, I see a black screen with a lot of commands/steps. It keeps hanging at the line: [2.202543] [<c0804db73>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10And at the same time, caps-lock and scroll lock lights on my keyboard are blinking. What does this mean? what i see is this:

I have an old averatec machine (3200 series) Slackware 12.2 is working fine out of the box (13.1 is not even booting after installing, so i decided not to work in this direction) except for the wireless. the wireless is working some seconds after putting the interface up, later stops working, and if you mess around a little with the interface, the computer will hang (caps and num lock will flash and thats all) I tried diffferents kdrivers (right now i downloaded the latest linuxwireless and im using those drivers) same situation. was working fine with kernel 2.24 and old drivers (the iface wass called ra0, right now is wlan0) I know this is not much information, but i will try to get another pc to make a ssh and beeing able to get some traces.

I have more than a dozen servers running CentOS (mostly supermicro servers) everytime i do mkfs.ext3 or mkfs.ext4, it always hangs the server (nothing is responding, not even the terminal) can't even do Ctrl+C to kill it. but the funny thing is, if i leave it on for hours, it'll finish eventually.
this puzzles me, i've tried so many different SATA drives and different servers, different kernels, different CentOS. for example purposes, my CentOS 5.3 runs 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5 kernel. i also have 5.4 and 5.5. mkfs.ext3 works fine on SAS, but always hangs on SATA. here's where it usually hangs Writing inode tables: 2126/7453

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

Distribution = Oracle Unbreakable Linux 5.4 x86_64Machine = HP DL180 2U ServerModifications = LSI SAS/SATA PCIExpress CardSo I plop 5.4 on this box, and install goes great, but then when I try to reboot the machine ('install is complete, click to reboot'), it won't go... post completes, fibre card and sas card get done with their posts, and then it just craps out when you'd expect it to start loading the OS.So I thought the card was bad... stuck the horrendous HP Storageworks PCIExpress SAS card back into it and had the same behavior, good install, but boot failure.
Bios is set to defer to the PCI card for boot priority -- first bios boot device is the DVD drive, then it defers to the card. With the LSI, I had chosen physical drive 0 (1st one) to boot. With the HP Storageworks, you can't boot physical drives, so I just made a logical drive from one physical drive and went that route... same behavior

Just received Intramfs update, within the hour (4/22/10 11:47 central) , installs correctly on a new 10.04 install but now machine cannot bootIt is somehow resetting the video it appears as the boot screen comes up in different (larger) type. then blanks and all activity stops,, I have been having similar problems if I apply all updates after an initial install of 10.04 but if I hold the opne gl modules the system will work but a backup taken with Remastersys made after the open GL installs will not work while the one made prior to the open GL install will restore the system so I'm guessing some sort of erroneous HW reset sequence

Recently I have built an old pc using bits and bobs that have been collecting in the garage for years and decided to try and turn it into a file server, and to get some experience in networking etc. Now I had a choice of 2 motherboards for the system:
1.)gigabyte ga-8siml
2.)elitegroup l7s7a2
I first built the pc using the gigabyte board, install was successful and ubuntu server booted on restart. The only problem was, there is no onboard lan on the board and the only spare wireless pci card I found was completely frazzled. Rather than buying a new wifi card to get the system running, I thought I would try the other motherboard since this had onboard lan. The elitegroup motherboard however does not have onboard vga, so I dug out an old agp ati radeon 9200se 128m ddr tvo graphics card and plugged her in. The install went fine, but after a restart, I'm left with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.
If I hold down 'shift' for long enough I can bring up the grub menu, but if I select anything I get no signal on the monitor. After a while on the blinking cursor screen the monitor will time out to no signal on its own. I have tried the installation using different combinations of the options given by F6 of the first installation screen but to no avail. I have also tried installing the generic kernel as opposed to the generic-pae.

I am having a problem getting F10 to boot after install.I downloaded the DVD, burned it and installed from it. No errors during the installation but when I go to reboot the system comes up saying:"VolGroup00 not foundUnable to access resume device (/dev/volgroup00/logvol01)Mount: error mounting /dev/root/ on /sysroot as ext3:h file or directory"This is being installed into an AMD Opteron Blade with an Adaptec SC2000 controller card, 4 SCSI disks configured in a RAID 5 array.I gather it's looking at the wrong device for a boot track/loader, but not sure how to fix thisAny ideas? I figured if it found it during install it should find it during boot but that doesn't seem to be the case

In the end, I am trying to dual boot my MacBook Pro with Fedora 14 and OSX. I am having issues getting the bootloader working for Fedora though. I have setup my partition table like this:
/sda1 - EFI
/sda2 - OSX
/sda3 - /boot
/sda4 - LVM (root, home, swap)
Fedora installs fine, and the bootloader installs to sda3. I use rEFIt to allow me to boot to my Linux partition, but when I do I get "no bootable device". I have done a little reading and have found people have problems doing with this with GRUB (default Fedora bootloader). So what I would like to do is try installing LILO or maybe even GRUB2. how to change the bootloader Fedora installs from the Live CD?

I'm running Kubuntu with KDE 4.5.3 and noticed that if I don't have any chat windows open and kopete minimized to the message indicator, it will appear to "hang" and log out all of my accounts. I sometimes have to do a killall from the command line or restart it. If I keep at least one chat window open on the desktop of the main Kopete window open, I never have any problems.
My Google-Fu hasn't turned up anything so I thought I'd check if anyone else has had this type of problem?

Trying a LiveCD of 9.04 and it wont boot on iMac 8,1 with Intel CoreDuo2. Using rEFIt or not doesn't help, boot to cd gives a black screen with overlength cursor and takes no keyboard input (CAPS light wont even come on). No splash screen or chance to get a prompt. md5 check of cd against iso file using dd is fine and matches published md5. Tried alternative (text) cd iso and same story. Tried Bootcamp for the initial partitioning and no difference. Mac installation cd boots fine as does OSX, burned cd from multiple machines and no joy. Graphics is an ATI Radeon HD2400. Mac running OSX 10.5.8

I have an Acer Aspire One AOA110 (SSD version that came w/ Linpus Lite) that my brother gave to me several months back when it stopped working. I've been trying various ways to revive it or make it useable, but haven't had any luck so I figure it's time to look to the community for ideas. I have already updated the BIOS to the latest (v3310) version, so I don't think it's the common issue these netbooks have where they don't even post. I'm kind of thinking the GPU died halfway or something. If I could just get it to work in a command line only mode, I'd be happy.
The netbook will post fine, but when I try to boot into Linux, the screen will go blank part way through the boot process. I don't ever remember hearing sound afterwards so I don't know if just the screen is blank or if the computer is locked up as well. I have tried several distros, but all of them seem to run into the same issue. Some with text based installers (Debian) get all the way through the install, but won't get all the way through the boot process. I'm only trying to get to a command line, not into X or anything graphical. Arch Linux also uses a text based installer, but I couldn't even get into the installer before the screen goes blank. I've tried changing some of the kernel options such as nomodeset, vesa and framebuffers options, but didn't have much luck with them either. I've also tried some older versions of Ubuntu (I think back to either 8.04 or 8.10) and tried the text installs, but I can't remember if I couldn't get into the installer or if I just couldn't boot, I want to say I couldn't even install. Mind you it's not random, it's always at the same point for a particular distro.
So the other small twist to this all is that FreeDOS works fine, besides not being able to get the sound card or network card working. I can play games, set different resolutions in ZSNES, etc. This seems a little odd to me, but I'm hoping it makes perfect sense to someone reading this.
I want to be able to run Linux with a command line interface, but I can't find the right distro/settings/whatever that it stays in the video mode (vesa?/framebuffer only?/I'm not even sure what to search for) where I keep the display and get to a command line. Any thoughts on what's happening when the screen goes blank or what I can do to get Linux working on here again?

This started a few days ago and I checked back through recently installed packages and nothing looks related. If I boot into ubuntu normally, plymouth looks a mess, but then things boot fine but while the mouse is showing and ubuntu goes about with connecting to networks and so on, but it doesn't register the and input from the mouse or keyboard. It will sleep if you press the power button, but its no more responsive after waking up.
If I boot into recovery mode, and use the failsafe graphics option then everything runs fine. Apart from 3D graphics being pretty slow, which I can kind of understand. I get the same behaviour on all of the last three kernels. I'm running the latest maverick on an HP 6715b. i386 version although the processor is 64 bit compatible. 2Gb RAM.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and a small Windows 7 partition (cuz I can't get Ubuntu to run my MSI TV@nywhere plus card but that's another issue).I can log into Windows fine. If I choose Ubuntu, however, the boot process will go thru a few screen flickers. Then one of two things happens:1) I get a scrambled up pixelated image (not sure what it is) for about 3 second, then it goes into the login screen and I can log in normally.2) I get the scrambled up pixelated image and it hangs. This happens about 4 times out of 5 when rebooting.
I do have an nVidia card and a beta driver (they published it the 21st, I believe, of this month) but this happened long before that. It's happened ever since I installed any of the drivers (I've tried a couple different versions, hoping to fix this) for my card.
My system is a frankenputer:
Phenom II quad core 3.0 cpu
nVidia GeForce BFG 6600
4G DDR3
500G drive
Note: I do have 3D rendering when I finally get into the desktop. Everything works great, except that when I'm playing my mmorpg, Regnum Online, it freezes the entire computer and I have to reboot (not sure if that has anything to do with it or not).In case it's needed, this is my grub:(Second note: I'm sorry for the length of the post but I don't know how to upload documents/files to show)
