I am trying to boot kubutu from FC10's grub. FC10 is in MBR, installed kubuntu without grub. Is that a problem for me now? I mean, should I need to install kubutu grub in order to boot from FC10 grub? I tried with these methods but nothing works:

I did a fresh install of Fedora Core 10 32bit on my Caompaq Presario AMD 64 laptop which originally only had Vista ultimate 64bit. When I go in to grub and choose windows I get a screen that says:

I'm bonding the two NICs on my FC10 server to create a bonded LAG between it and my Cisco Catalyst switch, but during kernel init, the system always give me a notice that "bond0 doesn't appear to exist" so it skips it.Once I log in, I can always open Network Manager and the bond0 interface goes from "Inactive" to "Active" and bond0 immediately works, and I can restart the appropriate network services and everything is fine. But any idea why this bonding wouldn't be initializing during boot up? The ports on the Cisco are configured for hard set speed and duplex and portfast is turned off on them.Is there a guide for best practices for creating LAGs (bonded interfaces) between FC10 and Cisco switches?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy system has 2 hard drives, a 400gb master and a 250gb slave. sda (my main 400gb Windows drive) has XP on it. The slave (sdb) has 3 partitions:
sdb1 is for my downloads (NTFS ~180gb)
sdb2 has Kubuntu 8.10 installed (ext3, 60gb)
and sdb3 is the swap (3gb).
I want to do a destructive upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 - I have the CD already and burnt. I know I have to select the partitions manually due to the complicated setup, I know I need to format the sdb2 partition to ext4, mount point /, and the swap can stay the same. On which hard drive should I install the bootloader? I can't remember where it is installed now, all I know is I had a lot of problems with the install.
I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed fedora on my second hdd, the other one had xp before fedora, now in grub it shows xp as other and wont boot into it, just hangs there. SDC is an external drive and sdb is the xp drive as you can tell by the filesystem.

I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
I have an Intel DG33TL MB, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8GB SuperTalent DDR2-800, and 4 Seagate 500GB hard disks. The disks are connected to a 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML and set for RAID0. I partitioned the drive in the following manner: 900GB for XP-Pro x64 (first install), 100 GB XP-Pro (installed second), and the remaining for FC10. After installing FC10 x64 using downloaded DVD .iso I am getting the following error on reboot:

Not a major issue but my Ubuntu boot screen change to the old classic Orange theme after i installed Kubuntu on a different drive and ofcourse a new Grub loader as the Kubuntu installation prompted. It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.

When Mint formated the hard drive, Fedora wasn't in the graphic, even though sda1 was ext4 and sda3 was lvm2. When Mint rebotted, Mint and OpenSUSE were on the menu, but Fedora wasn't.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
I loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?
Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:

I have just updated KDENetwork to this level and now my F10 doesn't find any wifi connection. By the way, I have been working with F10 for some months without any problem on wlan.

got myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.

My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I have freshly installed Xubuntu on my HP compaq nx9010 laptop and grub doesn't boot system. Only minimal BASH-like line scripting is supported. How can I fix it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed latest kubuntu (10.04) on sda7, ext4 , and i selected the advanced feature of the installer to install kubuntu bootloader on sda7. 11.1 is on sda5 .First , it destroyed my 11.1 grub bootloader on mbr . I managed to restore it with the 11.1 installation DVD. Now i try to boot kubuntu from the sda7 bootloader, without success . I searched the forums and tried some hints i found but found no similar problems. Here are the different entries i tried on grub (mbr) , content of the /boot/grub/menu.lst :

Sometimes (but not every time), when booting my Dell Inspiron 530, eth0 will not come up right away. I can boot and log in to Gnome, and the NetworkManager applet shows that the ethernet cable is unplugged. After sitting for 5-10 minutes, it will link up and everything works. If I unplug the network cable and plug it back in, it comes right up. But once it's linked, it works fine and never disconnects after that. I've tried switching to a different port on my switch and a new ethernet cable. So I suspect it's some sort of weird kernel problem. I checked /var/log/messages and the only thing that looks weird is:

But I have a second Inspiron 530 that has the same entry and it works fine. Has anybody seen a problem like this? I've looked around and so far can't find out the exact issue. I've upgraded NetworkManager to the latest version for FC10
We (2 persons) are experiencing a total freeze on first boot after installing fc10 from the 6 CD distro set, and yes, we used the same discs but ran the validate check on each. One machine is a rather ancient Acer G7500G which had previously been running FC3 happily; the other is a very new Dell Notebook (now running FC9 happily). The freeze occurs after the progress bar turns all white. Pressing escape shows that the volume group(s) have been found and are now "active", but that's all she wrote.
The systems can be mounted in repair mode and I notice that there is no "functions" file in /etc/rc.d/init.d but this may be normal for FC10.
The Del owner have officially given up, but before I throw FC10 out and go to 9 also, I though the question was worth asking: has anyone installed FC10 from the CD distro as opposed to the DVD distro successfully?
I just upgraded to F15 from 14 and F15 doesn't show up in GRUB only 2 kernels of F14. I can't obviously boot into either one, so now I am stuck with nothing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
I've been upgrading all our servers from FC8 to FC10. One thing that is no longer there are the start up script messages, being replaced by the white and blue line at the bottom.
I like seeing the bootup messages when I reboot (rarely) to make sure nothing went wrong and not having to go into boot.log to check it.

I am using FC10. how do I change the resolution of the "Boot Up" screen? My monitor is 1024x768 capable but my boot screen is 1280x1024. I don't get anything until it finally loads X Windows. When my machine is booting up I cannot see the screen because my monitor can't handle it. When I hook it up to my other monitor (1280x1024 capable) I can see the boot up screen. I'd like to be able to see the boot screen in case there are any errors I need to se. How do I change it?

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

I installed F15 from DVD overwriting F14. In the new grub.conf I added:

I just installed kubuntu on my fakeraid system and need help adding it to grub. I need to find the partition it is on. fdisk -l craps on me because of fake raid and i need to know what version of the kernel was installed. (in other words what version does the live cd install?)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have used openSUSE for a long time, but was trying to install Kubuntu 10.10 in addition to opensuse 11.3 and Windows 7 on a Gateway desktop (1500 GB hard disk & an external drive with 1000 GB. From the CD with the isoimage I got the live version and then decided to press install. I chose to follow the suggested choice of partition: About half of the external drive (500 GB) was allocated to Kubuntu while the internal hard drive contained Windows 7 and opensuse.
Everything went well until I was asked to restart the computer. I got a black screen with the message:
error: no such device: 64e3ffcl-c003-482a-87f3-89489e5e067d. grub rescue> At this point the only command that will not respond with Unknown command .. is 'ls' which gives: (hd0) (hd0,msdos9) ... (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos2) (hd1,msdos1) (fd0) (fd1)
I am now ***completely lost***. The only step that gets me out of this screen is ctrl-alt-del which causes a reboot and brings me back into the same situation. The ***computer is useless*** until this is resolved.
First time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub.
Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno.
