I'm trying to install 10.10 to HP nw8440, it boot's from cd, installs and don't start's, just showing me "No such partition" error.Partitions on my laptop are:

I work at a local library. In a few days I am getting 8 new HP g72t laptops. Is there a way to do multiple installs of 10.10 with the same partition setup, installed programs, config settings , etc? I am a volunteer and have set up many ubuntu installs before but always had each machine old and different. Now I would like to automate all the installs somehow.I picked that laptop as linuxcity.com sells them with Ubuntu installed.I got them with windows and plan to remove win 7 and do Ubuntu 10.10
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm installing a file server on Lenny (Samba on RAID5, nothing exotic)
First, I installed on a basic SATA drive, to check everything else in the system was recognized correctly. Success.
Then, I added my 3405 Adaptec board, with a 3 drive RAID5, and reinstalled, still on the lone SATA disk.
Install runs ok, shows correctly the 3405 board, detects the logical drive alongside with the SATA drive. Smooth. I install Lenny on the SATA drive, planning to use the RAID5 for later partitioning and data storage. During install, the SATA disk is shown as SCSI-1 and the RAID5 disk as SCSI-2. Again, install completes correctly.
But on reboot and after selecting the default config, the system complains it can't find /dev/sda1!
If I remove the 3405 board, Lenny boots fine.
Is the presence of the Adaptec board and RAID5 drive changing the numbering of the disks, so that the SATA disk is no longer seen as /dev/sda1 ?
I have been installing Fedora 8 Linux with already having Windows Xp as my primary OS....
I have a total of 80GB Hard disk.Out of 80 GB,I have freed 8GB for Linux.But during Installation after "selecting language for keyboard" and then choosing "Create Custom Layout", while giving partitions I have alotted 4GB for '/' and 2GB for Swap.
Initially space was created for root(/)...but it is unable to create space for swap and all other boot,home etc...
It is showing the error msg as "Could not create partition as there is no space left for /(root)"...
I have debian 4.0 installed for my apache web server (for some reason I did not require PHP all these days...). Now, I wanted to install PHP5 on the server. But I get http errors.When I run apt-get update I get the following error0% [Connecting to security.debian.org] later it displays[URL]The same happens when I try to install PHP5What could be the reason... should I fix sources.list?

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently I have built an old pc using bits and bobs that have been collecting in the garage for years and decided to try and turn it into a file server, and to get some experience in networking etc. Now I had a choice of 2 motherboards for the system:
1.)gigabyte ga-8siml
2.)elitegroup l7s7a2
I first built the pc using the gigabyte board,install was successful and ubuntu server booted on restart. The only problem was,there is no onboard lan on the board and the only spare wireless pci card I found was completely frazzled. Rather than buying a new wifi card to get the system running, I thought I would try the other motherboard since this had onboard lan. The elitegroup motherboard however does not have onboard vga, so I dug out an old agp ati radeon 9200se 128m ddr tvo graphics card and plugged her in. The install went fine,but after a restart, I'm left with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.
If I hold down 'shift' for long enough I can bring up the grub menu,but if I select anything I get no signal on the monitor. After a while on the blinking cursor screen the monitor will time out to no signal on its own. I have tried the installation using different combinations of the options given by F6 of the first installation screen but to no avail. I have also tried installing the generic kernel as opposed to the generic-pae.
so the problem is that when I try to install anything with Software Center I get this error

upgraded from Fedora 10 to 11, had both KDE and Gnome desktops installed under 10 but now upgraded to 11 I get a boot error when truing to boot to KDE and most KDE apps that used to run under Gnome no longer do so

Im trying to do a frugal install off the hard drive (no usb,cdrom) with unetbootin. It installs grub and then will boot the installer but is still tries to find the removable media. Whats going on????
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have presently a (working) boot dedicated partition, where grub stuff resides, but I want to change it to a common "/boot" folder in the root partition (in a different hdd). For some reason I can't do it. The first thing I did was to copy all the things that are in the boot partition to a boot folder on the root partition. After that, I tried: grub-install /dev/hdc1 (which is odd but it's where the root partition actually is)
When I did it from the linux I have installed on my hdd, it actually did something, I don't remember all the output (except that there was something about it not being able to access hda, which is oddly the dvdrom), but it didn't work. From a live CD, the same command (grub-install /dev/hdc1) is answered with: Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. From grub's own prompt, the things are more or less the same. First of all, it does not find stage1, even though I did copy the content from the boot partition to a boot folder in the root partition.
I tried to proceed, anyway, with root (hd1,0) and setup (hd1,0) (which is /dev/hdc1, according with the "geometry" info given by grub). "Root" is accepted, but "setup" is answered with: Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type But the files are there. I can't "cat" the menu.lst from grub though, unlike with the actual working boot partition. The same error message. From the terminal, however, it's all there. I tried with /dev/hdc1 both mounted and unmounted, the same message. So, basically I have two questions, I guess:
1 - can I really do this sort of thing running a linux installed on a hdd, rather than a live cd, or is the live cd preferable for some reason?
2 - what am I missing?
(A note that may worth making is that I'm using the soon-to-be deprecated grub version, 0.9 or something, not grub2. I think it shouldn't be a problem since I've installed the system with the old version to begin with, but that may be irrelevant, I don't really know)
I'm having problems trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto a partition that I have created. I boot from disc, select that I want to instal it to a partition and when I get to the list of available partitions, it is not listed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install linux on my HP pavillion 511w for several days. The first I tried to install was debian, it didn't freeze but it kept saying unable to mount cdrom drive. (This may have been from an incorrect jumper setting that I later changed.) I haven't tried debian since changing the jumper.
I next tried ubuntu 10.04 beta 2, all it did was go to a ubuntu flash screen that never stopped cycling these small round "lights".
I then tried the "stable" ubuntu 9.10. This went to a screen with several options for installing ubuntu, checking the disk etc. No matter what I selected it would just freeze. Since this is my first install I wasn't sure if this was normal or not so I waited several hours and still nothing, after enough time I concluded it must have been frozen. But before I continue wasting time waiting for hours can someone tell me... when installing these linux versions is there a sign that it is loading, booting, or installing the OS? I figure it must have a status bar or something, but want to make sure.
I next tried linux mint 8. It did the same thing, went to a sceen with several options and when I select something it says "loading" at the bottom with a blinking cursor, but of course it never loads anything, just sits there. This one throws me off a bit because it says its loading and the cursor blinks but it just doesn't seem like it is actually doing anything.
I have also downloaded ubuntu 8 which I plan to try next. I've tried changing the boot/install options by pushing F6 or whatever it was.
The computer is an older system that I never use because its so slow running XP. I thought linux would run faster and I could get some use out of it while learning/experimenting with linux. I always have to have projects to keep my mind working, but constantly failing at the starting line is not much fun.
I am new to linux and have installed fedora 12 on my system. The partition sizing which I had done is :
- 17 gb
home- 8 gb
mp -1gb
usr -2gb
Boot -200mb
swap - 4gb (I have 2 gb RAM)
all partitions of ext4 format.
I would like to know that whenever I am going to install any new software or packages then it will be installed in which folder or partition? I have only 170 mb space free in user and have not installed any thing yet. Do I need to resize it. If yes, then how can I do so?
I would like to know when usb inserted, its showing cant mount when i clicked details its showing bad blocks in beginning , and smething in /dev/sd6. Can i knw why usb drive cant be mounted automatically , even if its set to do so, and to cope the error mentioned above
View 1 Replies View RelatedXP and Ubuntu are on different drives and they were booting ok prior the the reformatting. With the Ubuntu drive selected as the 1st hd boot device in Bios: I can boot into Ubuntu ok if I select it in the Grub2 menu If I select XP in the Grub menu I get:

If I select the XP drive as the 1st hd boot device in Bios I can boot straight into XP.So that is ok. This thread: [URL] has given me a clue that: "The UUID listed in grub.cfg is wrong In some cases the UUID in the above search line in grub.cfg is wrong. This can for example happen if the UUID has changed due to formatting or partitioning. Bugs The "search" function is plagued by various bugs (see [1], [2]), causing the search to fail."

Yesterday I decided to install Fedora 13, having heard good reports about it. I started with linux back in the RH 5.2 days on which I cut my teeth. Since then I've used many distros and versions, openSUSE, RedHat, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Slack ... I have a vista machine I recently put FC10 on. Through the course of figuring out wireless drivers, I goofed it enough that I was told to simply reinstall linux. I had the fedora GRUB file set as I wanted. But after I re-installed FC10 it would just hang after it searched for bootable CDs and stuff. I got the super grub CD and am able to boot into windows no issue. HOWEVER, when I select the fedora option, I get
"Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"
I assume this means the grub doesn't know where my Linux boot stuff is. I have a separate drive dedicated to the linux install. The Vista drive is where the MBR is. So... how do I tell the grub where the FC10 install is? I've tried to reinstall FC10 twice hoping I just goofed something. edit: The standard grub file was in /boot/grub or something. Is there a file I can edit to point in the right direction?
When upgrading F12 to F13 I had a fatal error when I selected to update grub so I opted to do a fresh install of grub and the upgrade proceeded without any further problems. When I went to boot the system (dual-boot with Win 7) grub gave me error 17 "cannot mount selected partition". So I booted into rescue from the install disk thinking that maybe reinstalling grub might help, but when I ran "grub-install /dev/sda" I got the message that "/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive" (I have Windows on SATA 1 sda and Fedora on SATA 2 sdb). I exited rescue mode rebooted entered BIOS and swapped the drive order and restarted. Success!... Well almost. The progress bar goes all the way across the screen to the point the login screen should come up then it hangs...
View 8 Replies View Relatedi did ubuntu 10.10 install in windows and something must have gone wrong since in the preboot menu the ubuntu was visible but could not boot [a windows boot manager message came up immediately on selective ubuntu]i reinstalled it and now have 1 windows 7 and 2 ubuntu. when i select the ubuntu in the an other boot screen [GNTU or GNU come up [2 ubuntu options 2 windows] when i select the normal ubuntu on both the screen flickers and nothing shows up.How can i remove both ubuntu installations and start all over again?ideally without removing windows.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 11.04 via wubi. the installation appears to have gone well but ubuntu doesnt appear as an OS choice when i boot up.
Its not a timeout issue as it is set to 30sec and i can see my other options (windows and a recovery option). the only thing i can think of is that my computer has a separate partition set up for recovery and i think that is screwing things up.
Here is my boot.ini:
My only guess is that since the recovery partition is the first partition that its causing problems.
using onboard windows disk management i have made 75gb unallocated to add to the aforementioned ntfs data partition. but, after resizing extended partition, will i need to fix grub even though i will be adding the unallocated space to a storage partition and not the ubuntu boot partition?

I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new thinkpad X301 with 4GB of RAM and thinking of getting fedora 11 on it. The plan is to have it triple boot with vista/seven and hopefully OSx86. I am aware of the 4 primary partitions limit on an MBR disk. I was thinking of having a swap file instead of swap partition and not creating a boot partition as well. If I install the boot loader(GRUB?) on the root partition will I be able to boot it without any problems by using vista's boot loader?
Or Maybe I should install GRUB on the MBR and add all the other operating systems on it? Does anyone have any objections for not creating a swap partition or a boot partition? When comes to desktop environment I've been using KDE in the past, is there any major advantage of using Gnome over it? KDE seems to look really nice on fedora where Gnome is maybe more stable?
