I have a Dell machine with two hard drives that has Windows XP Home on the first disk (sda) and I just installed Karmic to the second hard disk (sdb) and when the install finished installing Grub2 to the MBR and the system restarted, I get the no such disk error and the grub rescue prompt. There is no option in BIOS to boot from the second disk. What do I need to do to get this working?

After updating to Squeeze from my prior Lenny distro (amd64 with whole disk encrytion using LVM2, dm-crypt, LUKS) everything went well - at first. I was duped like so many, thinking that all was well and I could remove the legacy-grub (aka: Grub1) and just use grub-pc (aka: Grub2). As soon as I removed the legacy-grub and rebooted my laptop, I was confronted with:
GRUB Loading stage1.5 GRUB loading, please wait..Error 15 At this point I wasn't sure if it was a Grub problem or a deeper encryption problem - especially after reading that some people had missing packages in Squeeze (lvm2, dm-setup, initramfs-tools, etc.)
Okay, the solution for me.
1. download and burn to disk: debian-live-6.0.0-amd64-rescue.iso[URL]..
2. scroll to and press enter/return on: text rescue
3. choose a root directory - for example: /dev/blah/root (I wrote down the list of possible /dev/.... for reference - this helped me remember where and what I had partitioned in Lenny)
4. choose: Execute a shell in /dev/blah/root
5. once in the shell, I discovered I needed to mount a few of those partitions that I had written down in order to get access to grub-probe, update-grub, grub-install, etc. You may not have to if your partitions are minimal. I you need to use other partitions, type (for example):

I have a machine with two internal SATA drives sda and sdb. Winows XP is installed on sda and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on sdb. After installation I rebooted and was able to choose either OS from the grub menu.After shutting down and rebooting I was greated with the grub rescue prompt and the messageerror: no such diskI was able to boot to a live USB and use my system again. I thought the problem came from grub being installed to the MBR of sdb, rather than sda. Therefore I installed Ubuntu again, however installed grub to the MBR of sda.
Same thing happened again - the first reboot works fine, then subsequent reboots grub cannot find the disk and I am forced to boot from live usb.Attempt 3 saw me install the root partition onto sda. A couple of reboots later and I was back at the grub rescue prompt. Two days later and after lots of reading I discovered that after doing a reinstall of Ubuntu, rebooting the system then doing a 'sudo update-grub' seemed to fix the disappearing grub problem.I was wrong. It lasted about 6 reboots between Ubuntu and XP, but has broken again. I don't see what the problem is,One point to note is that the BIOS does not let me choose which of the two internal drives to use as primary, infact it sees them as a single eSATA drive.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta. The installation is fine, but grub2 isn't loading Linux. Instead of booting into the OS, I get the message: No such disk grub rescue >I have two hard drives: /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Ubuntu is the only OS and is located on /dev/sda1. I ran the "boot info" script and include the results here. One problem I see is that I have grub2 on the MDRs of both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. BTW: From the Live CD, I can select boot into hard drive and Ubuntu will start up just fine. I can also use "Super Grub" CD and everything loads fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.
I downloaded the latest version of wubi and when I click to run i get the error "pyrun.exe - No Disk. There is no disk in the drive. insert a disk into drive DeviceHarddisk2DR2".

After installation of debian, using the squeeze net-installer, on a HP elitebook 6930P, i get the following error. "non-system disk or disk error"
It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).
/ is set with the bootable flag.
The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.
I've been using Ubuntu since 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I only recently fully switched to Linux OS's, and Ubuntu is now my primary. I currently have 9.10 installed. CURRENTLY I also have Backtrack 4, and Fedora 12 (Ugh!).Previously, I thought something was wrong with my my filesystem in Ubuntu 9.10, and after an upgrade of the linux kernel, I started to get Error: You need to load the Kernel First. That's where my problems started. I had upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and I still had Grub Legacy, so I went through hoops to try and get it to work, but eventually everything just kind of broke, and I completely wiped off my partitions on it and started fresh installs of all 3.
And now that the new linux kernel is released, 2.6.31-20 generic (I think... That's what the highest number on a file I can find in /boot is)I went through a few more hoops and ladders and tried to get it to work, but to no avail. I've looked the internet for a solution to this and tried just about everything but there is no unified answer, and I've seen on Launchpad there are alot of bugs that are classified as 'Fixed', but the problem still remains.I took out the 'quiet splash' part in the GRUB2 line for the newest kernel and it didn't do anything. It only changed it to "Error: Couldn't find file".This is the top two kernels (Main and Recovery for the new, and Main and Recovery for the previous working one)

I am having trouble upgrading from old grub to grub-pc. I have a clean install of 9.10 on a system with a new ASUS motherboard with Nvidia RAID configured as RAID 0.Although I read the page on SATA pseudo-RAID, this doesn't seem to apply, as both 9.10 and Windows XP installed cleanly without any additional drivers required.I did notice that contrary to the documentation, 9.10 installed with grub v0.97, not the new one as claimed. It is working fine, but just to be ornery, I'm trying to upgrade to the new one, and this is where I ran into trouble.Whenever I try to run grub-upgrade, I get an error from grub-probe that 'no mapping exists for' my raid partition. Apparently grub-probe can deal with the device, but not with the fs_uuid, as follows:

I'm thinking the problem may be in my grub device.map file, which only lists the SATA raw device aliases, but I may be completely wrong:

Windows 7 boots fine if it is the only drive connected, or it is selected as the boot drive in the BIOS. I booted into Lucid, ran 'sudo update-grub' and it found the Windows 7 install on the second disk. When I try to use that Grub entry to boot Windows 7, I get this error screen:

I seem to remember in the Grub 1.x days there was a map command that would 'swap' the drives so Windows would think it was the boot drive, but the Grub2 autogenerated command doesn't have anything like that.how to get Grub2 to boot Windows 7?
i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell PowerEdge SC1425 with two SCSI-disks, that I have tried installing Debian Squeeze on. This machine has previously been running Lenny (with grub 1), and the upgrade was done by booting a live-cd, mounting the root partition and moving everything in / to /oldroot/, then booting the netinstall (from USB), selecting expert install and setting up everything (not formatting the partition).
Both disks have identical partition tables:
/dev/sda1 7 56196 de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 8 250 1951897+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda3 * 251 9726 76115970 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 contain a Dell Utility, that I have left in place.
/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 are members of a Raid-1 for swap.
/dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 are members of a Raid-1 for / formatted with reiserfs.
After installation, grub loads, but fails with the following message:
GRUB loading.
Welcome to GRUB!
error: no such disk.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>
Doing "ls" shows:
(md0) (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1)
I can do the following to get grub to boot:

This will bring me to the grub menu, and the system boots.
It appears that grub has only found md0, which I believe is the swap partition, because ls (md0)/ returns error: unknown filesystem. I have installed grub to both sda, sdb and md1, and tried dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and dpkg-reconfigure mdadm, as well as update-grub.
I manually added (md1) /dev/md1
to /boot/grub/device.map, but still no result.
I have run the boot_info_script.sh, but unfortunately I cannot attach the RESULTS.txt, because the forum aparently does not allow the txt-extension. Instead I have placed it here: [URL]. I am tempted to go back to grub-legacy, but it seems I am quite close to getting the system working with grub2.
Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:

This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

No matter what I try to click on, the window simply ignores the command, regardless of the amount of times I issue the command.
Originally, computer had 20GB drive dual boot WinXP and LinuxMint using so-called grub legacy. I upgraded another WinXP machine by cloning its 120GB drive to a new 250GB drive. I put the 120GB in the Linux machine and gparted it to free 40GB. I tried loading Ubuntu 10.04 Studio in 10GB partition. Something went wrong during software unpacking phase and was left with commandline (c/l) 10.04. Kept 10cl in the partition. Tried again in new 10GBpartition to load Ubuntu 9 Studio - success. Grub2 is now new bootloader. Boot options = c/l 10.04, 9 Studio, XP from 120GB, LinuxMint, and XP from 20GB. The 120XP is unbootable (HardwareAbstractionLayer problem I expect). Tried to install 10.04 (regular not studio) over c/l 10.04 but managed to install in addition to i.e. did not overwrite. But otherwise 10gui install is ok. FYI: Grub2 is the initial boot loader however selecting LinuxMint on orig 20GB drive shows grub = legacy in LM (grub -v) term box, the Ubuntus on the 120 show grub 1.9x in term.
I wanted to delete 10cl from disk and grub. Originally intend to gparted->delete partition from U10gui then run grub update but could not because a partition (i.e.10gui) on the target disk was mounted. So I booted into LM and deleted 10cl partitions (ext and swap). That was a bad move! Could not boot machine - grub2 would not boot because 10cl partition was not found. It left me at the "grub rescue" prompt. I wound up reinstalling Linux to the empty partitions.
How do I delete the 10cl o/s from grub and the disk?
Later I will want to delete unbootable 120WinXP o/s from grub and the disk. However, with the WinXp, I will want to keep the data and just delete the o/s.
After attempting to install Ubuntu 10.10, the boot drops into grub rescue mode Under that, I can see 3 drives, hd0, hd1 and hd2. Apparently grub2 switched the order, as the CD installer had the drives as
/sda partition /home
/sdb partition /boot, swap, /(root), /spare (sdb1,sdb2,sdb3, & sdb4 in that order)
/sdc partition /spare
but grubs lists (hd0) (hd0,1) (hd1)(hd1,1) (hd2)(hd2,3)(hd2,2)(hd2,1)
Apparently grub2 puts /sdc before /sdb when listing out under the ls command in rescue mode??
I have tried several times to run the "install-grub" command, and it always comes up with no errors.
Should I try installing grub2 to the first drive /sda (hd0) instead ?
Whenever I try to enter in the commands from the tutorial https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2, I always get "unknown filesystem" error. If grub2 cannot read anything, then obviously I cannot boot the system.
So I've a computer with a lot of disks which is running Ubuntu 9.04. The setup is made od a software raid 1 array of 200 MB for use in /boot (md0), then another raid1 array of the remaining space as a unique PV for the LVM2 vg0. This vg0 is split in many lv, for /, /usr .... and swap. A few days back, one of the raid1 disk went wrong. So as the raid is built on 160Gb disks and nobody in my town sells so little disks I bought a couple of 320GB disks. The partitioning was made like the original partitions, except that the second partition is way bigger than it was. I replaced the failed disk in the arrays, and now I've an md0 of 200 MB and an md1 of roughly 150GB as it was previously and all is in sync. This replacement was made using a rescue disk (in order to be sure that the machine was not locking anything...)
So I thought it was fine. But upon reboot on the hard disks, I get a fast GRUB message "error: no such device : <UUID ending in 4ec05>. when I start the first Ubuntu entry I get the same error. So I edit the boot entry, remove the "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set <UUID ending in 4ec05> " and boot the damn thing. When booted I ran :

Secondly, I tried doing a search for similar problems but I had a hard time following the solutions so rather than just jump on another thread I figure i'd start a new one.I am trying to move on from XP and tried setting up 9.10. I did the LiveCD; followed the installtion prompts and installed, and restarted. I got a HP mini 5102 yesterday and decided that Win7 wasn't doing it for me so I would put ubuntu netbook remix (10.04) on it. Set up a usb stick with the installer (using universal usb creator) and booted from it.
I decided that I would do a full install of ubuntu as I have no need for windows on this machine, hence I left no partition for windows when doing the install. The install went fine but when the machine restarted I was faced with a black screen and the error message "Non-system disk error".
At first I thought that I had messed up the boot order and it was trying to do a network boot as I was getting "PXE-E61: Media Test Failure", so I changed the boot order and fixed that problem but am still getting the non-system disk error.
I figured that I would try and boot from the usb again and see if I could redo the install or just boot from it for the time being but when I tried that I got the non-system disk error again (though, this time if I hit any key when the error message is showing it quickly flashes "geom error" before going back to non-system disk).
I am running a dual boot system with windows 7 and Ubuntu. Both have run smoothly on my machine (Core 2 quad core on Gigabyte board) I recently upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 via the update manager within 10.04. Following the upgrade the initial boot failed at the login screen ( i simply got the purple colored screen with a white box in the center of it). Instead of trying to figure out what went wrong, I simply re-installed 10.10 from live CD on top of the upgraded Ubuntu that was failing at the login screen. The live CD install seemed to fix everything for the most part ( I did notice some quickly flashing text right before the login screen. I think it was an error message but it was too fast to read)
My problem now is that I am trying to remove some of my old kernels from the Grub2 boot screen and I cant. I have read many posts on how to remove the old kernels, but my system is proving to be difficult. The old kernels definitely show during boot, but whenever I go into Synaptic they are not there. I have downloaded Ubuntu Tweak, and they do not show in it either. I have read the information at [URL] I went to http://www.fixthecode.com/remove-hug...sts-in-ubuntu/ and thought this would fix my problem but I keep getting an error: "awk: 1: unexpected character 0xe2" when i try to run: "dpkg -l | grep ^ii | grep 2.6.3x-xx | awk -F{print $2} I am running kernel 2.6.35-22 The kernels i want to remove are 2.6.32-23 and 2.6.32-24.
Dual boot PC, boot disk and WIN XP are on good disk, Ubuntu was installed on failed disk. (I prefer separate disks for each OS).
I know I will need to reinstall Ubuntu later, and of course, GRUB2 now crashes without the Ubuntu disk.
Confirm that the only thing I need to do when I get the new drive installed and partitioned is to boot my XP disk in Recovery Mode and type "fixmbr", (then reboot to confirm clean WIN operation on the existing disk) then install Ubuntu as normal on the new disk.
I've installed Ubuntu Server V9.10 (64-bit) on a brand new server I built with no previous OS installed. The drives are two Hitachi 1 Tbyte hdd's configured as RAID1, an ASUS M4A78T-E motherboard with an AMD Phenom-II cpu with 8 Gbyte of memory. I updated the bios following building the computer. The Ubuntu 9.10 server installation appears to go without error. However, on reboot I get the message:

grub rescue
I suspect the MBR is missing or Linux is not pointing to the correct drive in the grub.cfg.I've made sure the boot order is correct, but other than that I don't really know the commands or syntax to troubleshoot this problem. The only CD I have is the Ubuntu 9.10 server ISO I downloaded and burned to dvd.
