Ubuntu Installation :: Ethernet Works But Wirless (at First) Doesn't Work
May 7, 2010
Ive been having some troubles with wireless. Ethernet works but wirless (at first) doesn't work. However, when i plug the ethernet in, all the wireless networks it detects are populated and i can then connect until i shutdown my computer. My disable internet button on my computer also doesn't seem to work well. It is always blue, and when i press it and have internet connection estabsliehd, it erratically turns from blue to orange to blue and then stays on blue.
When i have shutdown and booted up and i haven't placed ethernet in (so wireless doesn't work) it wont even change color.Any solutions? I dont know what info to include so just let me know and when the wireless does it work, it is slow in opening a new tab and connecting to google.

installing ndiswrapper. I've used Windows all my life and I just made the jump to Ubuntu a couple days ago, install native drivers for my card, but at the end of the list of like 25 packages there are 4 packages that won't install because they all say they have dependencies upon each other. Now, I'm trying ndiswrapper and I don't understand it in the least little bit... I know I'm an utter noob, but the OS seems amazing, I'd just like to connect to the internet with it. Even the ethernet port doesn't work! :/

I have a sony laptop VGN FS315M, i recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, and i really love the unity interface.
But i have a few issues as well:
1. Vaio FS315M has Nvidia graphics card, ubuntu suggested a video card driver which i installed but didn't work well so i switched to the another one and it worked generally well but that too has problems like if my computer goes to sleep upon closure of lid, it cannot wake up again. it shows only a white screen and only way to get out of it is to restart the computer by manually pressing start button.
2. Sound card works generally ok but mic doesn't work on startup but when i click sound preferences and mic selection from analog microphone to another one and then again to analog microphone, it works but not the first time. Sound output is low compared to windows.
3. Arabic/persian fonts generally are not shown well in firefox?
4. Computer seems to be slow in unity compared to 10.10, may be because of high demand on graphics or the graphics card is not optimized?
5. Skype won't start automatically and there's no option in this skype to do so and also it doesn't save password?
6 . Ubuntu doesn't connect to net connection unless i connect manually, i want it to connect automatically to internet
7. This issue is not related directly to ubuntu. My system is a dual boot system with windows xp as well. Before windows xp, i tried windows 7 beta and then later removed it but it left its bootloader at startup. since my CDROM drive is also out of order so i tweaked BIOS by installing PLOP to install ubuntu. Now i have 3 startup menus if i want to run windows xp, one for ubuntu, then windows 7 with option for earlier version, when i select earlier version then windows xp or PLOP installer. so its a mess. I want PLOP to appear at the beginning (so that i can have boot option from USB available), then ubuntu and if i select windows it should go directly to xp not thru others.

I have a brand new ASUS EEE PC 900HA with Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. The wireless hasn't worked yet but the ethernet is fine. I've been browsing the forums for hours to find a fix but now I've installed/queried/removed so many things I'm totally confused.
lspci -v gives me this

Have an issue with my wireless. It sometimes doesn't connect to my wireless. And sometimes when it does it gives me an invalid IP address.I have a lenovo SL400 Laptop.Intel 802.11agn wireless is my adaptor. And I have OpenSuse 11.4 with gnome. I works fine if I give it a static IP Address but that will create an issue with other computers on the network. Is my desktop environment (GNOME) or is my Wireless adpator not compatible with opensuse.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Wubi through Windows 7. It seems to be working but it will not connect to my wired internet connection. It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Powerbook G4 1.5ghz 15", and the ethernet port on the laptop doesn't work. So I can't search for drivers to install.
Is there a way to either tether internet to the laptop using firewire? find the necessary drivers so I can transfer them?

I am appealing to the minds far greater than mine.. I have been using this forum with resounding success without having to post for some time, and I am more than impressed with what you can resolve by simply trawling through the archives, on this occasion however, I'm stumped.
I have a desktop upstairs in my home running 10.10, I have a Ralink Wirless LAN dongle RTL8188CUS with a mini CD with all the drivers etc. Now, when I physically install the dongle Ubuntu does not firstly even acknowledge it's existence, so, I unpack the CD Lynx dir and there seems to be no way to install it? I can't see a code to run in terminal to install.. nothing?

I've got 9.04 and 9.10 both installed on the same machine. The /home directory is on a separate partition, so both OSes use the same /home.I can't get Compiz to work at all in 9.10, even though it's been perfectly fine in 9.04. Is there a backport of some sort that i should install? The fixes I've found all point to editing the xorg.conf file, but of course, Karmic doesn't have an xorg.conf file.I've tried reinstalling the Compiz files, reinstalled the open-source video drivers, installed/uninstalled fglrx drivers a few times, rebooted dozens of times.

I've recently bought a recycled computer for my office. The plan was to get an old cheap computer and use it to write LaTex documents but nothing else. However, I can't seem to get the thing to connect to the internet. I'm on a University network which has a funny setup but I don't think that's the problem. So here's the deal. I have tried this with 9.04, 10.04 and 10.10 and it hasn't worked. The computer recognizes the ethernet cable. If I issue the command "sudo mii-tool eth0" and get back "eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok". However, click on the networking logo on the top right, and click auto eth0, it tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. Unfortunately I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networking so I have no idea what to do to try to fix this.

Centos 5.2 Asus Eee box with Atom N270 and it came installed with "eLinux" which doesn't even come close to meeting my needs (low demand intranet server). But eLinux did work as far as I tested it.
First, CentOS seems to detect the Intel 945GME video chip but I end up with a blank screen. I used text mode to install CentOS. Then I searched for a solution. Found someone suggested also using the i915 driver with 945GM. That didn't work.
So, I reverted to a VESA driver. That worked except I couldn't get resolution greater than 800x600 even after I added a Mode line for 1024x768 to the xorg.conf file. However, the X interface wasn't that important. I mostly wanted into the utilities so I could fix the network.
I had tried a fixed address (192.168.1.11) since the box is supposed to be a "thin server." No luck. So, I tried DNS and tried activating again. The suggestion was that the network cable wasn't connected. When using DNS, the network hub lights flash. Something is happening.
Rebooted the computer using Puppy Linux (on a usb key). Video comes up in VESA mode. I can set it to 1024x768. It found the DNS server without any complaints. (Note: I didn't so much as touch the ethernet cable during the reboot).
Copying and Pasting isn't easy with a computer that won't connect to the LAN. But the hardware is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 2). I since tried Slackware 12.1 and it's pretty happy on that box. Vesa mode gets me 1024x768 and the ethernet works (however it thinks it's on eth1 which may or may not be a clue). I'll try CentOS on an old box for other testing.

I've recently installed KDE 4.4.1 just to try on a Dell 1545 laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 previously installed.
My problem is that the wireless connection works just perfectly with nm-applet under Gnome, but when I login on KDE and ask KNetworkManager to connect to the same network as before, it can't finish the connection.
When I choose the connection the program asks for my passphrase, I type it and then it just sticks on "activating network" and nothing happens.
My experience with KDE is zero, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd even tried to kill KNetworkManager and try to replace it with nm-applet, but I think there's a daemon that restarts it immediately.

I recently moved from Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server. I have a Dell D600 acting as a three prong firewall. I use a Netgear FA120 USB NIC for the third prong. After converting to Server, the NIC detects as Eth1. I'm able to configure an IP, but the NIC never sends or receives packets. The same NIC works great in Ubuntu Desktop. Dmesg never shows the NIC being ready.

But for some reason, when the laptop is on battery I don't get any sound and all, from the 3.5mm or the speakers.

When I connect to my workstation via Real VNC Viewer 4 to Xvnc running on the workstation, and running "su -" I get authentication failure as follows:
So, effectively I cannot su when connected via VNC.
But if I'm at my workstation, I can su just fine:
Nov 18 16:24:30 localhost su: pam_unix(su-l:session): session opened for user root by xyz(uid=500)
Interestingly enough, I cannot su to my own userid over vnc, i.e. su xyz
In /var/log/secure I get:
I suspect it has something to do with PAM, but cannot figure it out.

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

I am trying to install Debian Lenny (64 bit) on my brand new Toshiba laptop (intel i3, 3 GB RAM) and for some reason the installer cannot detect the ethernet card. This is the error message I get:"No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list."And then there's a list which is quite long -- and I cannot replicate it here. But I want to know why the installer cannot find the ethernet card on its own or find the appropriate driver. In any case how can I fix this problem?

I have an HP Pavillion Elite HPE computer I just got for a server. It has an internal gigabyte on the mother board and I put in one pci express trendnet teg-ectx eternet card in before installing. It is using the realtek 8169 chip. I had the local network on this card and the pubic static ip on the built in ethernet port eth0. After the intstall of debian 5.07 32 bit I couldn't get the eth0 pubic access to work. I can't get into the server with sftp or ssh and openssh has been installed and I can get into it locally on the local network.
I then installed a second ethernet card the same as the local network card. Now the pubic is on the which is eth1 and the local is eth2. I can ping out to [URL] but I can't get into the server on the eth1 using ssh and I have a iptables firewall and I turned it off and I stll can't get in. I am thinking that the eth1 card I added after the install doesn't have the driver or something. nothing is hooked up to eth0 right now.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04
uname -r
2.6.28-11-generic
Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.
[Code]....
My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.

see some histry here: [URL].. I have managed to get the 10.04 Live CD to boot on an HP All-in-one 200-5020, using "noacpi". However I am unable to get wireless to work. Would this be an issue with the PCI Express slot that the wireless card is installed in? I did use 32-bit, should I be trying 64-bit? If I install using "noacpi", does this mean that ACPI funstionality won't work on the machine once Ubuntu is installed?
Thanks for your help - trying to work out if I persist, or take the machine back to the shop (would prefer not - I like it - but I don't want to have to live with Win7).
