Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 With Sony Vaio Fs315m - Sound Card Works Ok But Mic Doesn't Work On Startup
May 2, 2011
I have a sony laptop VGN FS315M, i recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, and i really love the unity interface.
But i have a few issues as well:
1. Vaio FS315M has Nvidia graphics card, ubuntu suggested a video card driver which i installed but didn't work well so i switched to the another one and it worked generally well but that too has problems like if my computer goes to sleep upon closure of lid, it cannot wake up again. it shows only a white screen and only way to get out of it is to restart the computer by manually pressing start button.
2. Sound card works generally ok but mic doesn't work on startup but when i click sound preferences and mic selection from analog microphone to another one and then again to analog microphone, it works but not the first time. Sound output is low compared to windows.
3. Arabic/persian fonts generally are not shown well in firefox?
4. Computer seems to be slow in unity compared to 10.10, may be because of high demand on graphics or the graphics card is not optimized?
5. Skype won't start automatically and there's no option in this skype to do so and also it doesn't save password?
6 . Ubuntu doesn't connect to net connection unless i connect manually, i want it to connect automatically to internet
7. This issue is not related directly to ubuntu. My system is a dual boot system with windows xp as well. Before windows xp, i tried windows 7 beta and then later removed it but it left its bootloader at startup. since my CDROM drive is also out of order so i tweaked BIOS by installing PLOP to install ubuntu. Now i have 3 startup menus if i want to run windows xp, one for ubuntu, then windows 7 with option for earlier version, when i select earlier version then windows xp or PLOP installer. so its a mess. I want PLOP to appear at the beginning (so that i can have boot option from USB available), then ubuntu and if i select windows it should go directly to xp not thru others.

I've been searching all around information, how can I enable wifi, bluetooth and lan on this laptop. However, nothing works for me... rfkill unblock all command doesn't work.
how to do it in short time that would be just great, because I offered to my friend to repair her computer and install 'better' working Linux, but so far I even cannot enable wireless.

I've happily finished a SWE course that required VS2010, and thus a new computer to run the hog. Now that the course is done, I'm installing Ubuntu. As the post title implies, the live CD works well and the install goes fine. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu and do an update. After that, though, Ubuntu freezes on boot. It gets as far as the moving dots but freezes right after that.

I just installed Ubuntu on my Sony Vaio VPCEB23FM. However, when I tried to watch videos, there was no sound coming out. I went to [URL] and tried out the link in post #5, but that completely got rid of my sound card and I no longer have any version of ALSA.
Code:
[anurag@Anurag-Vaio:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...

Just bought one of these - [URL]. Installed 9.10 64bit, install went smoothly, but now having a few problems with graphics card drivers and sound. The system has a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Graphics so I guess it's too new for a driver?

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new Sony Vaio series S but it does not recognize my wireless card (I think). The button is on, but the light does not turn on, and it does not detect the wireless card. The wireless card, an Intel Centrino Advanced -n 6205, does work in ubuntu and when I run the command: lshw -C network, it appears UNCLAIMED, that I think it means the drivers are not in the Ubuntu libraries. What can I do to make it work? I've been struggling but I cannot make it work.

I am having a problem with my new laptop Sony VPCEA1S1E. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and since then I cannot hear any sound. I have tried a lot of things before posting in here but nothing seems to work. From changing the module value in the alsa=base.conf file to installing the updated alsa drivers (drivers, utils, base}. I have also checked the alsamixer so that nothing is muted. I am struggling with this problem two days now and it does not look like I am getting somewhere. The various postings I have read so far did not work for my case.

I'm currently installing Slackware 13.1 on my old Sony VAIO. It's got a wireless card sticking out the side of it, and I just want to make sure I set it all up correctly. I got to the screen where it's asking:
static IP
DHCP
loopback
And I'm not sure which one to pick.

Ethernet, bluetooth and video work fine. I also managed to get the wireless card working by installling "firmware-iwlwifi". I can make the touchpad work sending to the kernel the parameter "i8042.nopnp" at boot time(grub), but then I get the computer frozen for a second every five second so I decided to use a usb mouse, until I get another fix.As you can see I can use the laptop except that...I have no sound at all, I can only hear something using headphones.I've been searching the web but the only thing I found is a fix in ubuntu using some kernel-modules from backports repository, but can't install them on debian.

I upgraded the wireless card in my laptop (sony VAIO CW) due to the original Atheros being incurably slow. The new card is an Intel 6300 ultimate n. In Windows 7, after installing the relevant drivers everything worked without a hitch. In my Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however, I have been unable to get it working.Initially I had the compat-wireless modules installed (linux-backports-modules-wireless-generic), as I had done so to try and get the Atheros card working better. I tried removing all of these, and that made the difference that iwconfig now (instead of nothing) listed
Code:
wlan1 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=16 dBm

Not exactly sure but tried several fixes and I'm now getting sound.
Not overly loud but decent enough. Funnily enough it sounds louder inside a windows virtual machine!
I've managed to get everything working including built in webcam on my laptop. The only thing I can't get is sound.
I have a Vaio VPC-EB1E0E which has "Intel HD Audio" . sound worked in Windows when I first booted up and used a Realtek Audio driver.
I'm using Kubuntu 10 RC1 - 64 bit (unable to get any earlier version of U/Kubuntu to work - unable to get Fedora to work either).
The closest info I've seen to helping is:
[URL]
I installed it but wasn't sure how to configure and it still didn't work... (no idea what codec etc)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
Subsystem: Sony Corporation Device 9071
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22

I just got a new Sony laptop running the I7 Q740m Quadcore with 4m ram w/ WIN 7 Home. I want to run Ubuntu in a Virtual machine. I am wondering if Virtual box is a good choice, or what other VM I should use? Also which version of Ubuntu, 10.10 64bit or 32bit? Would an older OS be more stable?

In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.

Cant install it or event boot it to try, because when i choose to install or test it the scene goes blank. I had the same problem when I had the older version but solved it whit using the custom eidi or whats is called and changing xorg.conf. But I saw that nvidia had posted the drivers for GeForce gt 330m on its site for 32 and 64 bit Linux drivers so i wanted to try the newest ubuntu. The thing is that i cant event install it or anything, so i cant use the eidi method either.

i'm trying to install ubuntu on a sony vaio. Unfortunately i cannot boot from a cd on which i have burnt the .iso file of ubuntu. The only way i managed to install ubuntu was by creating a usb bootable stick, but here also that doesn't work so well. My workaround was to use virtual clone drive which is freeware to simulate a cd rom in windows and get the iso file started. By leaving the bootable usb stick in the computer in this way it worked...
So in the end i have grub and can load ubuntu and win xp, but then by trying to format the harddrive i kind of messed things up and had to reinstall windows. Because the DVD drive only reads original cds. So from there i will attemp to reinstall ubuntu again. But how can i get rid of win xp afterwards ? If that CD Rom would only read burnt cds or if it would habe been possible to boot from usb then i wouldn't have this trouble.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10..My sound works fine unless I have headphones plugged in. I've tried 2 sets of headphones, and it doesn't work with either set, so it's not the headphones. The volume is not muted (it's at 100%) for the headphones either in alsamixer. How can I diagnose and fix this?

I successfully before install Ubuntu on my last laptop along with windows vista and it was rather easy because ubuntu allowed me to partition the disk so simply. However, on my vaio, my whole hard disk is partition and there is no unallocated space. It will not allow me to partition the disk and when I boot up the ubuntu live cd to install, the partitioner doesn't look the same and I'm hesitant to make any changes because I'm afraid I'm going to damage my data. I have a 500GB HDD in which I want to use just 60GB for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 7. Also, I'm running 64-bit Windows if that matters at all.

I got a new Sony Vaio Z and try to install Ubuntu on it. The laptop has got two 64 GB SSDs setup as a RAID 0 array. [URL]. As the configuration is done in the BIOS, I assume it's hardware RAID. [URL]. The problem is that - no matter what I try - the installers are unable to write the GRUB loader on the hard disk. I tried both, standard and alternate installer (9.10 / 64 bit), and both failed at that point. Not a really error message, it just says "cannot write GRUB boot loader".
I also tried two different scenarios:
- Ubuntu beside Windows (shrinked the partition for that)
- Ubuntu on the empty RAID

Everything worked fine in Kubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). On the upgrade to 10.10 (64-bit) it takes about a minute until I can move the mouse after startup and the integrated memory card reader doesn't work (but the green LED which used to only come on when there was a card in there is now always on). This has been discussed twice before: here (closed and solved by unplugging cardreader which I do not want to do) and here (unsolved but closed as maverick no longer in beta) dmesg (note the errer -110) follows. Let me know if I can/should include any other logs/info!
