Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Works With "noacpi" But Wireless Doesn't?

Aug 26, 2010

see some histry here: [URL].. I have managed to get the 10.04 Live CD to boot on an HP All-in-one 200-5020, using "noacpi". However I am unable to get wireless to work. Would this be an issue with the PCI Express slot that the wireless card is installed in? I did use 32-bit, should I be trying 64-bit? If I install using "noacpi", does this mean that ACPI funstionality won't work on the machine once Ubuntu is installed?

Thanks for your help - trying to work out if I persist, or take the machine back to the shop (would prefer not - I like it - but I don't want to have to live with Win7).

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless: Works On Live CD, Does Not Work After Install?

Jun 12, 2011

Per the HowTo post a Wireless Issue Sticky, I have included the information in the 10 steps below. Here is the description of my problem: I am getting back into Linux after purchasing a new PC (have not owned one personally for several months). I purchased an HP, as I've had personal success with them. It is an HP Pavilion g4 Notebook. When I booted the Live CD, I was pleased that wireless just worked. However, after installing, wireless does not work. The Additional Drivers Tool appears to recognize my wireless card;however, when I attempt to active the driver, I receive an "installation failed" dialog.ere are two screenshots:And here are the results of the file from the second screenshot:

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Works - Wired Doesn't ?

Jan 31, 2010

I recently got a cable modem from Comcast, and connected a Belkin F5D7230-4 wireless router to it, then connected my computer and an Xbox 360 to the router with ethernet cables.

My computer dual-boots Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In either operating system, the wireless connection is flawless. In Windows, so is the wired connection. But in Ubuntu, there's a lot of trouble with the wired connection -- specifically, while I can connect to the router and to the Internet, and while I can use ping, dig, traceroute, etc., to verify connections to remote hosts, Web browsing, or anything else that uses http, works only for a few Websites, and then only erratically.

I don't believe it is a DNS problem -- testing with ping, dig, etc., demonstrates that, and I have also tried using alternate nameservers. I also don't believe that it is an issue with IPv6, as I've tried the fixes usually suggested, including editing the grub configuration to disable IPv6 support in the kernel and verifying that IPv6 was inactive. I've also tried using local dns servers such as pdns-recursor. None of these things seemed to help.

Also, perhaps unrelated, but disturbing: my computer has locked up a few times while testing the wired connection, and I had to use a hard reset to restart the computer.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Wpa/wpe Doesn't Work On KDE But Works On Gnome

Mar 22, 2010

I've recently installed KDE 4.4.1 just to try on a Dell 1545 laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 previously installed.

My problem is that the wireless connection works just perfectly with nm-applet under Gnome, but when I login on KDE and ask KNetworkManager to connect to the same network as before, it can't finish the connection.

When I choose the connection the program asks for my passphrase, I type it and then it just sticks on "activating network" and nothing happens.

My experience with KDE is zero, so I don't even know where to start looking. I'd even tried to kill KNetworkManager and try to replace it with nm-applet, but I think there's a daemon that restarts it immediately.

Networking :: Wireless Connection Works But Doesn't Show In Iwconfig Command

Mar 21, 2010

Ubuntu 9.04 with working wlan. I had to restart router & wap. It doesn't seem to ever retry to connect. I know my router & wap are good, I have wireless working on other laptop (running Puppy) I had to go into 'edit connections' in drop down and use 'wireless' tab then edit 'wireless connection 1' and hit 'apply' is there a better way to do this? also, no connections show up with command 'iwconfig' edit: with ifconfig, eth1 si showing data my ip address and packets sent & rcvd. I think I'll try do duplicate this event and use 'ifconfig eth1 down' and then up again to see if it reconnects.

Ubuntu :: Live Lucid Doesn't Detect Wireless Card ?

Sep 10, 2010

I own an EeePC 701; right now I'm giving 10.04.1 a test run on it, using a live usb.

The EeePC has an Atheros wireless card, but live Lucid doesn't detect it. Here's the output from a ifconfig command:

Code:

Will the card be detected by a properly-installed Lucid? Is there some package I need to install so I can use wireless? Or should I steer clear of installing Lucid on my EeePC?

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD, Upgrade And Install Fail On 9.10 And 10.04 - 9.04 Works?

May 23, 2010

My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Works But No Display After Install / Solution For This?

Oct 10, 2010

I have this problem where the 10.10 LiveCD 64-bit works (as in I get full resolution display and no video issues at all). But after install, the OS boots successfully but there's no display. I know it's successful because I was able to login in the dark (sound works).

Here's what I have:
HP m9340f (NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS with HDMI)
46" Sharp connected via HDMI
Windows 7, works fine.

Here's what I tried with no luck:
1. CTRL-ALT-F1 still doesn't show anything on screen, no terminal
2. Connected via VGA
3. Connected another 17" monitor via VGA, rebooted
4. Added vga=789 in grub before booting

The weird thing is that I had 10.04 before and it was working for a while then it suddenly stopped working. I figured I'd wait until 10.10 but I now have the same issue. I haven't tried 32-bit... I can give that a shot in a bit.

Ubuntu Installation :: System Freezes After Upgrade - No Live USB Works

I was running 10.04 with no problems. Upgraded. I may or may not have lost power before the upgrade was finished. Now my system locks out the keyboard and mouse on the login screen...nocapslock light or anything, but I know it's still running because the clock at the bottom increments once per minute. Booting safemode does not help, it simply hangs at some point on the scrolling black screen instead.I can boot 9.04, which is still installed on another partition, just fine.Is there any way I can boot to a terminal and try running apt-get again, to see if I can fix whatever's wrong?

I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. It is always blue, and when i press it and have internet connection estabsliehd, it erratically turns from blue to orange to blue and then stays on blue.

When i have shutdown and booted up and i haven't placed ethernet in (so wireless doesn't work) it wont even change color.Any solutions? I dont know what info to include so just let me know and when the wireless does it work, it is slow in opening a new tab and connecting to google.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lubuntu Live CD Doesn't Boot

Nov 15, 2010

I downloaded the Lubuntu 10.10 Live-CD ISO and burned it to a CD-RW disc. The Lubuntu Live-CD fails to boot on my secondary PC. It boots fine on my primary PC. The PC on which Lubuntu fails to boot is a Dell Dimension L (year 2000). Celeron 566 MHz. 192 MB RAM. That PC has Xubuntu 10.10 installed on HDD. Xubuntu runs fine. The PC on which Lubuntu boots OK is a Dell Dimension 4100 (year 2000). PIII 733 MHz. 512 MB RAM. The failing boot progresses to a point where I get a purple screen showing "Ubuntu 10.10". Underneath the "Ubuntu 10.10" is a progress bar consisting of four dots. The progress bar continually shows progress, but after a few minutes there is no HDD or CD activity. After about seven minutes I get a blank bluish-gray screen. After waiting an additional five minutes I pressed "Enter" and was returned to my original purple screen. The progress bar continued to show progress, but there was no HDD or CD activity.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 With Sony Vaio Fs315m - Sound Card Works Ok But Mic Doesn't Work On Startup

May 2, 2011

I have a sony laptop VGN FS315M, i recently installed Ubuntu 11.04, and i really love the unity interface.

But i have a few issues as well:

1. Vaio FS315M has Nvidia graphics card, ubuntu suggested a video card driver which i installed but didn't work well so i switched to the another one and it worked generally well but that too has problems like if my computer goes to sleep upon closure of lid, it cannot wake up again. it shows only a white screen and only way to get out of it is to restart the computer by manually pressing start button.

2. Sound card works generally ok but mic doesn't work on startup but when i click sound preferences and mic selection from analog microphone to another one and then again to analog microphone, it works but not the first time. Sound output is low compared to windows.

3. Arabic/persian fonts generally are not shown well in firefox?

4. Computer seems to be slow in unity compared to 10.10, may be because of high demand on graphics or the graphics card is not optimized?

5. Skype won't start automatically and there's no option in this skype to do so and also it doesn't save password?

6 . Ubuntu doesn't connect to net connection unless i connect manually, i want it to connect automatically to internet

7. This issue is not related directly to ubuntu. My system is a dual boot system with windows xp as well. Before windows xp, i tried windows 7 beta and then later removed it but it left its bootloader at startup. since my CDROM drive is also out of order so i tweaked BIOS by installing PLOP to install ubuntu. Now i have 3 startup menus if i want to run windows xp, one for ubuntu, then windows 7 with option for earlier version, when i select earlier version then windows xp or PLOP installer. so its a mess. I want PLOP to appear at the beginning (so that i can have boot option from USB available), then ubuntu and if i select windows it should go directly to xp not thru others.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Wireless In Live CD?

Oct 17, 2010

I want to upgrade the installation of Ubuntu on my laptop. However since I prefer a clean install I made a bootable USB with the 10.10 64 bit edition on it.

I can Boot from the USB fine but then it tries to connect to the wireless, it sees it's WPA secured asks for the password and then it tries for 20 seconds and asks for the password again.

I've checked the password by reentering it in my current 10.04 install and it works fine there, but connecting with the live cd is a no go.

I have a dell 1737 with an intel 1510 half mini card.

CentOS 5 :: Kernel Error Using Pci=noacpi

Jun 21, 2009

I have an HP Netserver LT 6000r - 6cpus (PIII, 700Mhz), 8GB RAM, 4 72GB SCSI

running Centos 5.2 - BIOS and firmware is latest.

Booting Centos 5.2, get errors in boot saying to reboot using the "pci=noacpi" flag. Whe I do this, I get a kernel panic, fatal, and the system will no longer boot, just keeps rebooting. If I boot without the flag, it will eventually come up, without monitor console, screen goes black, but I can SSH into the system, so the OS is running, I just do not have a console to log into.

I am trying to get X running so I can at least get some kind of GUI interface, but I am a neophyte with X. I have Xming, so could anyone tell me what to change on the Centos server to allow X to my winodws box, also, why the recommended pci=noacpi flag does not work, in fact makes thing worse?
