Ubuntu Installation :: Ethernet Works But Wirless (at First) Doesn't Work

May 7, 2010

Ive been having some troubles with wireless. Ethernet works but wirless (at first) doesn't work. However, when i plug the ethernet in, all the wireless networks it detects are populated and i can then connect until i shutdown my computer. My disable internet button on my computer also doesn't seem to work well. It is always blue, and when i press it and have internet connection estabsliehd, it erratically turns from blue to orange to blue and then stays on blue.

When i have shutdown and booted up and i haven't placed ethernet in (so wireless doesn't work) it wont even change color.Any solutions? I dont know what info to include so just let me know and when the wireless does it work, it is slow in opening a new tab and connecting to google.

Ubuntu :: Testing Before Installation - Can't Connect To My Home Network

Jun 3, 2010

This is my first ever time trying out a Linux based system and I would like to ask a quick question. When you plug in your cd/flash drive it comes up with the option to try Ubuntu before installing it on your hard drive. When I go to try I can't connect to my home network. Is this because it is in the try mode? Or something else?

Ubuntu Installation :: Trying To Remotely Connect To Home Server

Sep 20, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu and have been trying to make a remote connection to my home server. I think I almost there. Here's what I have done:

1) Installed Ubuntu Server 10.0 on a Pentium 2 with 256K
2) Installed SSH, MySQL, desktop GUI and enabled remote access
3) Port forwarded my Lynksys to 5900:22 and 80
4) installed Putty and TightVNC Viewer
5) Obtained a DynDDS account

My interanl IP Addy = 192.168.x.yyy
My External IP Addy = 76.xxx.y.zzz

When I run Putty, the connection times out (which I am guessing that my server may not be setup correctly). Since I am configuring all this at home, I am unable to simulate a true remote access unless I go to an outside location. Is there a way to test my connection from outside my network rather than waiting to login remotely from a place other than my home?

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 No Wirless Connection With LiveCD?

Apr 30, 2011

For upgrade-check I used today Ubuntu 11.04 X64 LiveCD om my Sony Viao VPCF13Z1E Laptop to check if all my hardware can be used with Ubuntu 11.04. When Ubuntu 11.04 X64 LiveCD was started I could connect to my network with my wireless network adapter. But when I tried to browse with Firefox I could not get a connection. A ping to my router or to an other machine did neither work. To browse the internet with Firefox and a wired connection works normally. When I use Ubuntu 10.10 X64 on my laptop the wirelss connection works normally.

The command lspci | grep -ni network on my Sony laptop responds with: 23:02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35) I use a wireless connection based on wpa/wpa2

Connection information from Ubuntu 10.10 X64:
Interface 802.11 WiFi (wlan0)
Driver iwlagn

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this problem? Or do I have to report a bug?

Ubuntu Installation :: Using SD Card As /Home - Or An Extension Of /Home?

Jul 1, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx to dual boot with Vista Business on a Toshiba Portg R500. Everything seems to be working great out of the box, but I have a problem with available space on the rather modest (but spectacular performance) 64GB SSD.

1) Current Partitions:

Toshiba includes three partitions on the new 64GB system, to which I have added one primary Linux container partition, enclosing two logical partitions.

- /dev/sda1 TOSHIBA SYSTEM VOLUME: 1.6GB, Partition type "Unknown (0x27)
- /dev/sda2 Windows Vista Business: 49GB, NTFS
- /dev/sda3 HDDRECOVERY: 6.5GB, Hidden HPFS/NTFS (0x17)
- /dev/sda4 Linux Container for sda5 & sda6: 7.6GB, Extended
- /dev/sda5 Ubuntu Filesystem: 6.6GB, ext4
- /dev/sda6 Swap Space: 1.0GB, Linux swap

I'm sure I'll remove Vista eventually, but in the meantime, (along with MS Office) it requires a whopping 32GB just to admire itself, after all the updates and security upgrades have been applied. I shrunk the partition to 49GB to leave space for future updates and upgrades.

Right now, Ubuntu only occupies 2.4GB of it's allocated partition, leaving 3.6GB free (I know, that doesn't add up to 6.6GB, but that must be something to do with GiB vs. GB, ... or magic, maybe). Swap is only 1.0GB, with 2.0GB of RAM, but I don't use Hibernate.

2) Installing /Home on SD Card

Well, I tried this first, since I have a nice 8GB, Class 10 SD Card, and a built in SD Card reader. With the SD Card inserted during installation, I was able to select it and designate it as /Home, but when I tried to restart after insallation was complete, I got an error message before the Ubuntu login screen could appear.

I think what is happening is that it doesn't mount normally when booting. It's not listed as a bootable device in BIOS, but there is a Toshiba Bootable SD Card utility included with Windows, which needs a bootable floppy or something to work. There must be something that allows the BIOS to recognize it as a floppy during boot, or whatever, but any Toshiba Utility isn't going to work with a Linux file system. Puppy doesn't like it either for the Puppy sfs saved user file (although it will usually work if I copy them there manually, rather than allow them to save automatically).

3) Extending /Home to the SD Card

I thought I'd just have to copy stuff to the SD Card manually, as extra storage, when /Home got too crowded and cosy. Then I noticed that as soon as I inserted the SD Card it immediately got added to the total space avaialable shown by the Disk Usage Analyser accessory (which just happened to be open at the time). So now I see 10.8GB total, which is plenty to start out with for me. I assume this is because the SD Card had been formatted to mount as /Home when I first tried that solution, and got recognized as soon as it was inserted in the slot.

Questions:

a) Will this work? Will /Home really use the extra space, or is it just "pretending"?
b) Is there anything special I might need to do?
c) What do I do with the three folders already on the SD Card, obviously put there during the failed attempt to install /Home on the card? (The third folder is hidden: ".ecryptfs".)?
d) Is it acceptable to leave swap with just 1.0GB, since I don't need to hibernate?
e) Anything else I need to consider?

Ubuntu :: Ralink Wirless RTL8188CUS LAN Dongle Nightmare - Doesn't Acknowledge It's Existence

I have a desktop upstairs in my home running 10.10, I have a Ralink Wirless LAN dongle RTL8188CUS with a mini CD with all the drivers etc. Now, when I physically install the dongle Ubuntu does not firstly even acknowledge it's existence, so, I unpack the CD Lynx dir and there seems to be no way to install it? Ubuntu Networking :: Connect 10.04.1 LTS PC With Other PC's On My Home LAN?

Jul 28, 2010

Problem: I cannot connect my Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS PC with other PC's on my hone LAN... My PC will connect to everthing in my LAN using any other OS (Win7, Windows Vista, OpenSolaris), but not with Ubuntu.

I have a small home network. I have 3 PC's networked together into a Linksys WRT-54G Wireless/Wired Router. That router, in turn, is wired to a DSL Modem. This router is wireless and has 4 additional ethernet ports. 2 of the PC's are getting their internet connection via wireless, 1 via wired. There is also a wireless printer, a wireless connected PDA Smartphone and a PSP'. There are occasionally 2 other test Franken-PC's up on this as well. The Windows PC's are running Windows Vista and WIN7 and see and share with each other under the WORKGROUP Group.

My PC is multi-boot with Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Desktop, WIN7, Windows Vista and OpenSolaris (plus a few other OS'es)... This PC has 2 Ethernet Ports and a Wireless card. The wireless card works on this PC under the Window's OS'es... but maybe somewhat "suspect" under Ubuntu. (Has been since I started with Ubuntu 9.10.)

From any other OS on my PC, I can see other PC's and their shared folders, get into my router through a browser... From Ubuntu, I cannot. I can not even get to my router setup from Firefox! But using another PC, I can see the Ubuntu PC in the LAN router table. From that PC, My Ubuntu PC doesn't show up as a "PC" on the network- but when I tried to see if it was there by putting the IP address into a browser it said:

Code:
"IT WORKS!
This is the default web page for this server.
The web server software is running but no content has been added yet."
Ok, this is "different"...

I think the following are additional problems, but I'm still not sure they are related to my MAIN problem: When I boot or shutdown Ubuntu, I get "ath5k floor calliibration failure" messages flashing across the screen when in a text or tty mode. "ath5k" is the driver that the D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 wireless card is using- But I can still get to the internet in Ubuntu by either Eth0, Eth1 or Wlan. Next, the other PC's are connecting to my router wirelessly to the LAN- My PC is connected ethernet.. If I try to connect to this via Wireless from my Ubuntu PC, it says it successfully connects, then less than a minute later disconnects. (on-off-on-off...)

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To WPA Home

Apr 20, 2010

First off, I should state that I am still using Hardy. I realize that it is many versions from the current release, but my schedule is full and provides little time to ring out a new distro and considering the nature of my problem I don't see much need.

The problem is that I cannot connect to my WPA home network. The wireless card is working because I can connect to any WEP network and before upgrading to Hardy I could connect, although not at first.

Have recently installed WICD which has not helped. WICD tries to connect but reports that it cannot obtain and IP address. Network Manager did not report anything but did seem to translate the password into an encrypted key (saw posts relating to this before but no obvious fix) Since switching to WICD I have not had the opportunity to test connection to a WEP network.

I do not wish to change the security of my home network to accommodate the operating system.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Connect With Home Network?

Jun 21, 2010

IWithout having made any configuration changes (that I am conscious of), for the past few days I have been unable to connect to my home network - and hence to the internet. My 64-bit Kubuntu (10.4) is on a dual boot machine. If I boot XP then things work as they have done for the past year or so - no network connection problems at all. So I know it's not hardware, LAN or router/cable-modem related. In addition none of the other systems on the network have a problem.

I tried to check if there are some firewall settings that might have changed - but cannot seem to find anything about the firewall in my Kubuntu set-up. Indeed I cannot figure out how to do any problem source identification.

Ubuntu :: How To Connect To Windows 7 Home Premium Share

Dec 26, 2010

I am having difficulty connecting to a PC that runs Windows 7 (and suffice it to say Windows XP as well). I go to Places > Connect to Server and choose Windows share from the drop-down list. I enter in the computer's IP address in the Server field and click Connect, when I'm brought to the "Password required for x" screen (x being the IP address). I enter my username for the Windows machine, leave the Domain field as is (it is WORKGROUP by default, which is the Workgroup name for both PCs), and then I enter my Windows password. The dialog keeps popping up as if I entered incorrect credentials. I do want to point out, on the dialog, it asks for a Domain name. Since I do not have this computer connected to a domain (I'm at home), it is a workgroup network. However, prior to Ubuntu 10.10, I was able to use this method to connect to Windows computers.
