Ubuntu Installation :: Error With Startup

Feb 5, 2011

I just downloaded Ubuntu installer for windows (wubi). After downloading and installing it as dualboot operating system. I went on configuring it. for my bad luck my laptop died due to low battery (I found it the cause, but may be some system error, well I don't think so) when the system was updating itself. Now I can boot to my old Windows 7 successfully, Ubuntu recover mode also. but when I try to boot with normal Ubuntu, it comes to welcome screen but never takes me to login page. I don't know what went wrong and how can I repair it. But I am really eager to sort it out and enjoy the Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid - Multiple Active Partitions Error At Startup?

Aug 4, 2010

I created a customized Lucid image and installed on my computer which has 1 hard drive (/dev/sda)When I booted up .. it gave me an error indicating "Multiple active partitions" ... and did not boot up ...

I used my live CD and run as live session to check on the hard drive, When I issued the command fdisk -l on an terminal , the out put indicated that only /dev/sda1 is bootable, and other /dev/sda* were not bootable ...

I am not sure why I got the "Multiple active partitions" message at boot up time ..

Ubuntu Installation :: "Boot Error" During Startup?

May 17, 2011

I have a 2004 Gateway 702GE desktop and I am currently running Windows XP. Recently the start button won't work properly and it keeps starting up the machine after I shut it down. So I decide to give Ubuntu 11.04 a try to see if it'll solve the problem. I've followed the directions on the Ubuntu download website and created a USB stick with Ubuntu on it (I couldn't create a CD because there's something wrong with my DVD burner, it can't read anything... but that's another problem for another day). Anyways, now when I boot from the USB stick, I get the BIOS screen first then I get a black screen with the words "Boot Error" at the top. That's the only message I get with no explanation what so ever. I don't get the grub screen because Ubuntu is not installed yet. My USB stick is formatted as FAT32. I also tried to install Ubuntu within windows using Wubi but I get an error message that says, "Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c". And this message refuses to go away after I tried to close it or hit either "Cancel", "Try Again", or "Continue". with the "Boot Error" or suggest another way to install Ubuntu?

SUSE :: 10.2 Won't Startup - Error Message "Could Not Start Kstartupconfig. Check Your Installation"

Mar 16, 2010

I foolishly changed the mount point of a partition on a HDD which Linux was not in fact using, and now when I try to start up I get a message box stating:- Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation.

How do I recover the situation. I do not have an up to date recovery disc. I do have a full bootup disc of Suse 11.2 - could I use the opportunity to update without losing all my personal files, or should I use the old 10.2 disks? The first essential is to get something back up and working.

Ubuntu :: Several Grub Error Messages On Startup

May 1, 2011

I just installed Natty on my laptop. It has SSD drive, so to align the file system to the physical block size properly I created the partitions manually. After the installation it only boots to the GRUB recovery console, so I tried re-installing GRUB from Live CD by:

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

It now boots to the system but always shows the following error messages instead of the GRUB menu on every boot:

Code:
error: file not found.
error: file not found.
error: no suitable mode found.
error: no video mode activated.
error: file not found.
error: file not found.

I suspect that I've missed out something during the installation, since SSD drives seem to need some more attention.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Startup Error 101 - CIFS VFS Mount Failed

May 1, 2010

I upgraded my Karmic OS to Lucid the day after it became available and have been having some troubles - I am having trouble starting the OS. Brief history: I have real troubles with the ATI graphics and spent a while trying (finally successfully) to remove fglrx and associated dependencies. I then rebooted ready to install new drivers. I now get the following error on startup:

CIFS VFS Error connecting to socket - aborting connection
CIFS VFS cifs_mount failed w/return code (-101)

For the last couple of weeks or so, I have noticed CFS errors on shutdown which has meant that I have needed to physically press the off button to turn the machine off, but since I could still operate I left that problem on the back burner "for when I have more time". Don't know if the two problems are related. Anyway, I am currently in the situation where I cannot start Ubuntu at all unless I use the install CD and try the LIVE distro.

My fstab file looks like this:
aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
/dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

(My PC Has a 1 TB drive and a 500 gig drive. The 1 TB drive has dual boot Vista (came preinstalled and I have a couple of games for it - else, yuk) and Linux. The 500 gig drive is a data drive). I'd rather not reinstall from scratch though may have to? I don't know of any way to repair-install the OS - maybe that would be possible too?

Ubuntu :: Error While Loading Shared Libraries : /lib/libc.so.6 During Startup

Jun 3, 2010

After the upgrades have installed on my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 (there were some kernel upgrades, I don't remember if there was any libc update there) it asked me to do a reboot. So I did and I got that error when Ubuntu was starting:

Code:
/bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: invalid ELF header
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And if I run Ubuntu in recovery mode there's what I get after this:
Code:
Pid: 1, comm: init: Not tainted 2.6.32-22-generic #35-Ubuntu

There's also Call Trace after this, and a bit of text there, but as I'm rewriting those errors from a photo captured (because I cannot find logs of this in /var/log/) I will skip it unless it's needed to solve the problem. EDIT1: I cannot find anybody who had this problem during startup, there are only guys who had this during compiling or installing software

CentOS 5 :: (oracle 5) Error With Emerald At Startup

Mar 13, 2011

I would like to use emerald on oracle linux 5. I prefer this forum so I migrated to here! In fact, I already managed to import some themes in emerald, and to apply them, but after a reboot there was an error message (I don't remember it but I can retry to boot if you want), and my new emerald theme was not loaded, instead I had the default one, and when I launched emerald I wasn't able to import a new theme, there was no theme in the emerald window. so I tried to import one with the file manager by clicking on the "import" button, but in my home folder (/home/olivier) I had ... nothing : no file, no directory, yet there are still on the disk, I verified.

this seems an error of rights, but I don't know what to do. I must also specify that I have not already put "fusion-icon" in the list of the applications to launch at the startup, so I have to launch it after the boot (and it's what I did after the boot I spoke about above. I don't remember if I launched fusion-icon as "root" or "olivier"...

Fedora Security :: NTPD Error Report At Startup Of Machine

Jan 25, 2011

I've been trying to make sense out of this error report. I get it every once in a while on startup of my machine.

Code:
Summary:
SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/ntpd access to a leaked netlink_route_socket
file descriptor.

Detailed Description:
[ntpd has a permissive type (ntpd_t). This access was not denied.]
SELinux denied access requested by the ntpd command. It looks like this is either a leaked descriptor or ntpd output was redirected to a file it is not allowed to access. Leaks usually can be ignored since SELinux is just closing the leak and reporting the error. The application does not use the descriptor, so it will run properly. If this is a redirection, you will not get output in the netlink_route_socket. You should generate a bugzilla on selinux-policy, and it will get routed to the appropriate package. You can safely ignore this avc.

Allowing Access:
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see FAQ [URL]
