I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.3 amd64 from DVD on a new HP 625 Laptop. Whenever networking is activated, application startup slows down significantly. When I deactivate networking in the nm-applet application startup is fine. I am using the broadcom-wl package from packman for the broadcom wireless card (BCM4313)

I installed WordPress 3.x on my localhost/Apache server, but I can neither install plugins nor update anything.This happens with both the stable WP3.0 version and the 3.1 beta. When I try to search the Plugin Directory from the WP dashboard, I get this message: An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.When I run an update, I get a page asking for the login credentials for the ftp user ("To perform the requested action, WordPress needs to access your web server. Please enter your FTP credentials to proceed. If you do not remember your credentials, you should contact your web host."). Since I'm part of the 'ftp' group on the system, I enter my system login information, click Proceed -- and get a blank page that does nothing.
I've gone to YaST, and I see that the system ftp user has a 6-character password (which may or may not be mine). I'm afraid to change it and risk screwing up other ftp-related functions. I'm running openSUSE 11.3, and am obsessive about updating. I will note that I have an old 2WIRE router that often requires me (including Zypper repos) to enter IP addresses instead of DNS-based URLs to successfully download stuff. Not sure if this is related, but just in case...

I'm using Arch Linux with kernel 3.0 and brcmsmac to manage my wireless card. My desktop environment is KDE 4.7 and I use networkmanager to handle network. Recently I've been affected by a weird problem wherein whenever I'm connected to a network Java apps such as jEdit take ~30 seconds longer to start but behave normal once started. What could it be due to and how can I fix it?EDIT:The problem occurs both with Oracle's JRE and OpenJDK, both versions 1.7. I'm behind a HTTP proxy, if that makes a difference.EDIT:I've discovered the cause of this problem. My /etc/hosts file had the wrong host name in it. After correcting this to my hostnameeverything is fine.

I disabled firewall to make sure everything pass.

I had some fun here, with my local Cyrus IMAP daemon. I "updated" the machine to openSuse11.4 (from 11.2) by doing a fresh install. Because some of my involved HW here isn't capable of IPv6, I switched it off using yast2:

Then I had a hard fight with Cyrus IMAPd, mostly caused by user brain damage on my part... But one thing really looks like a problem on the Suse side of the fence: My /etc/hosts missed the "localhost"-entry for IPv4 ! This was the contents:

I haven't seen this effect on 11.2 here and I haven't seen it on "my other" machine (running 64 bit version of Suse 11.4). But there I think IPv6 is still activated. I will check this, as soon as I get there.
Should this be reported as a potential bug in 11.4 ? Or is there some way, I could have messed up this. (No I didn't edit /etc/hosts by hand, before I corrected this thing)
I was trying to remotely log in to my desktop which uses 11.3 from my laptop via ssh. For some reason I get an empty field for the command echo $DISPLAY. and as a result an xclock command results in error: can't open display. I tried to set it to localhost:10.0 and I get: Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0
I've tried :0.0 and I get: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyError: Can't open display: :0.0 ssh used to work about a week ago before I performed various security updates. I was wondering what' the solution to this. I checked the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and ssh_config file both have X11 forwarding on. Can anyone with more experience out there give me any ideas?
What can I do to speed up the start-up after login?
I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with Gnome on my laptop (Acer Travelmate 2490) and I need about two and a half minutes from login until the hard disk lamp 'settles down'. This is much longer than I have been used to expect from earlier OpenSus versions. Are there some default applications/processes I could ditch?
This is a follow-on to "samba write failure crashes linux". It has the dmesg output when the write failure occurs.The remote server is os/2 v4.50 fp3.The failure occurred in this instance attempting to write a file from the localhost to a samba-mounted resource on a remote host. The failure always happens when at least 3 MB have been transferred. Smaller files are not a problem.
Other cases:
1. Saving any email (thunderbird) attachments to the localhost,
2. Downloading anything to the localhost using Firefox.
The most notable aspect are the phrases "kernel BUG" and "invalid opcode".

I got everything working except any localhost connections from within the server. I've tried to connect using localhost, 127.0.0.1, and dedicated IP from within the server and several CMS sites I have moved over to the server and all the local host connections fail.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! (side note: man hosts says that the name is based off the hostname file, but that's clearly not the case here. It's being named off the /etc/hosts file. Why did we move away from /etc/hostname? It's SOO much easier)
These computers (It's more then one) were all installed with the minimal Ubuntu disk and then installed basic software such as xorg, nautilus, gdm, and openoffice.
Does anyone know how to revert network speeds to those attained with openSUSE11.2-64? On openSUSE11.2-64 the reported network download speed was,

After upgrade to openSUSE 11.3-64 the figures dropped to about 25% of the previous values. After upgrade to KDE 4.5 and plasmoid-networkmanagement the initial values did not change but the average value dropped after about 30 seconds to ~ 15 kB/s. Approach so far:
1. The motherboard's (A780GM-LE) build in LAN (Realtek RLT8111DL) was originally detected by openSUSE 11.3 as the Realtek RLT8169 and kernel module r8169 installed. This was replaced by the latest module r8168-8.019.00 from Realtek.
2. After kernel update to Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64 the plasmoid-networkmanagement was replace by NetworkManager-kde4. This improved flow with,
max : 140 kB/s
ave : ~ 80 kB/s

After installing it, it works, but only at reduced speed, (I think), because when keeping the mouse over the list item (of that connection) in Network Manager, a window pops up saying I only have 54Mbit/s.
It says:

I have installed freeswitch app from opensuse 11.2 repositories. App got broken during the process/setup.., I have removed it (yast) ignoring some of it's dependencies, also I have removed folder /opt/freeswitch manually. In Yast it shows that app is still installed.. when trying to remove it, there is an error, force remove also out puts an error. "whereis" command shows no file, I was also trying to force install it one more time but it fails. Is there a was to delete it permanently?

I have a pretty fast connection - it's a fibre connection at approx 100Mbps Between my onu (modem) & computer (Lenovo SL510) I have a cisco wrt120N wireless router. I'm using Opensuse 11.3 (also dual boot with Win7)
My problem is . . . When I enter url in firefox (4) I get the message "looking up www. . ." for approx 5 to 15 seconds before anything starts to load. I also have the same behaviour in konqueror, firefox and yast software manager.
If I use Google Chrome the pages load instantly. Even never before visited pages.
A typical webpage such as Stuff.co.nz - Latest New Zealand News & World News, Sports News & NZ Weather Forecasts takes approx 20 to thirty secs to load in firefox and 3 seconds in Chrome. I can see the same behaviour always whether Chrome used first or firefox used first - so cache does not appear to be the issue.
If I boot into Win7 - websites load instantly there also.
I have updated to the latest wireless drivers for my system - but the behaviour is also evident if I attach a lan cable.

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) on my system and am experiencing severe performance issues with websites using https (any site using https). Page loads over https take anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same issue posted here Secure sites load slow or not at all -- there was no confirmed solution.
- My router/hardware configuration has not changed in a long time and I've run Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Windows XP on the same machine within the last year and have not had any issues.
- I also have a laptop running Arch Linux (kernel 2.6.38) and this problem does not occur using Firefox 4 or Chrome. To add to the madness this problem occurs while running Firefox 4 inside a Windows 7 guest via virtual box, but NOT while running IE 8 inside the same guest.
- This issue occurs using Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera, Konqueror, and Arora.
- I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox via about:config.
- I've disabled ipv6 in yast and have attempted to use both the "ifup" and "networkmanager" options.
- I am not using a proxy server.
- I've attempted the fix posted in the Ubuntu forums for a similar problem [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Banking Site is very slow.

I created the "moodle" database and "moodleuser" in mysql and started the apache2 web server as written in Moodle - openSUSE My problem is that the page //localhost/moodle is blank . does not appears nothinġ I tested the page //localhost/ and "it works" , and tested the //localhost/manual and shows the manual local pages of apache through http. I alsoo tested the //localhost/phpMyAdmin page and it works entering the "moodleuser" and password and shows the phpMyAdmin pages. I tried also //localhost/ATutor and //localhost/FreeSMS and they does not work (error "not found" page ) and tried //localhost/openbiblio and shows a "database query error"I changed the HOSTNAME varialble to localhosţ. The files in the /srv/www/moodle directory are owned by root whith 744 permisions I tried with lynx http text browser and shows the 500 error (internal server error)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a web application that runs on PHP and MySQL on opensuse 11.4 (web server) and opensuse 11.1 (database server).The web application uses a .htaccess file that causes my site to error with error "403 forbidden". If I add "+FollowSymLinks" at the top, it loads the application just fine.But problem is that I have an issue with the application, and they believe that my .htaccess file is at fault since it's custom. I hightly doubt it but wanted to eliminate that as a concern.
