Ubuntu :: Several Grub Error Messages On Startup
May 1, 2011
I just installed Natty on my laptop. It has SSD drive, so to align the file system to the physical block size properly I created the partitions manually. After the installation it only boots to the GRUB recovery console, so I tried re-installing GRUB from Live CD by:
Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
It now boots to the system but always shows the following error messages instead of the GRUB menu on every boot:
Code:
error: file not found.
error: file not found.
error: no suitable mode found.
error: no video mode activated.
error: file not found.
error: file not found.
I suspect that I've missed out something during the installation, since SSD drives seem to need some more attention.

I have a CLEVO laptop and it currently has Windows 7 installed. I now want to create a separate partition to install Ubunutu 9.10 64bit. I attempted to install this and the install part worked fine but as soon as I rebooted all I seem to be getting after the BIOS is 'grub loading'. I get no other error messages and am stumped on what the problem is. It also meant I couldnt load windows either but I fixed this by loading the windows cd, running repair and then fixing the MBR which another thread mentioned. Once this was done windows loading up ok. I have checked nearly every setting and it has made no difference. I tried reinstalling 9.10 but came up with the same problem. I am not sure what I did in Windows may have caused it. I have a 320gb drive and I shrunk it using disk management as I know the ubuntu will see this free space and install the OS onto it. Should I have left this and let 9.10 create some space automatically during install?

I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):
Code:
error: no suitable mode found
error: unknown command 'terminal'

I just installed ubuntu on my computer that already had windows 7 on it so I could dual boot them. After installing ubuntu and playing around on it a little I went back onto windows. I then restarted my computer and now it won't startup. I get an error that says unknown filetype grub rescue<. I don't know what to do to get back into windows or ubuntu.

Yesterday I installed the latest version of ubuntu to my computer that was already running windows 7. I had everything working fine until in windows I deleted a partition that had nothing in it.
After this I restarted but I can't get into either OS. I get an error that says Error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>
I think I need to fix something in grub. I have been booting off of a usb stick with linux on it in the mean time.

I currently have a NAS (Ubuntu 10.04) on my network without an access to a monitor due to a lack of a graphics card. I noticed that every time I restart the NAS, it's been taking longer to fully restart. I suspect that something might be wrong, and the warning or error messages are being displayed during startup.
Is there a log file that Ubuntu prints to for everything that is displayed from the moment the system starts up until the login screen? I have email set up on the system via .mailrc and .mstmprc where I could email out with the mail command. I would like to email myself the log file every time the system starts up so I can monitor the system's health.

I use Ubuntu on his edition 8.10 and have always been very pleased, until 11:04 last version. Actually used a dual boot for constant use of certain programs that only work on windows. By installing the latest version, everything is as before except that I can not see the initial grub, show me out of range. My boot loader resolution is 640x480 and still I can not see the grub at startup.

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.
Code:
[ Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive
in partition #6 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.

Problem-cannot mount 2 other samba computers on my ubuntu 10.04 via 'sudo mountall'. Additionally I now get Firefox/Thunderbird error messages as listed below. Had no problems with ubuntu UNTIL I attempted install of VirtualBox running WinXP client in my Ubuntu host. VirtualBox seemed to install ok but upon startup of WinXP client all I got was a black screen. To close it I had to do "Power Off" which VBox manual says is like a hard power off and is to be avoided. So I guess it's like I crashed XP within Ubuntu.
Now - ubuntu boots ok except will not auto mount other samba connected computers. Manually running 'sudo mountall' in terminal gives --
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18: swapon failed: Device or resource busy

mount error(6): No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
mountall: mount /media/samba_share [2239] terminated with status 32
Additionally I now get these warning messages when Firefox and Thunderbird start. (They do start and seem to work fine.)--
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } What I've tried-
1) fstab UUID matches error UUID above and matches UUID from blkid command:
fstab =#Entry for /dev/sdc2 :
UUID=24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 none swap sw 0 0
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; }
blkid = /dev/sdc2: UUID="24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18" TYPE="swap"
2) Reinstalled mountall from synaptic pkg manager; did not try to remove mountall and reinstall. To remove, removes LOTS of other packages from system - not brave enough to do that (yet).
3) Ran fsck on swap partition as below. Swap not found. (that confuses me.)p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } john@johndesk:~$ fsck /dev/sdc2
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
fsck: fsck.swap: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.swap for /dev/sdc2
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } 4) deleted all the files in ~/.dbus/session-bus. Ubuntu just rebuilds the same file back.

I have Ubuntu 9.10. The batter drained several days ago, and now when I attempt to boot I simply get a string of indecipherable error messages which last for about 5 minutes, and the screen then goes completely black. I am not able to even get to the login screen. Windows 7 Starter boots fine, so it's definitely a software issue. Any solutions short of completely reinstalling? I really don't want to lose all of my data.

Is there some problem with those other servers ?

I'm not sure when this occurred, but it happened either when I was trying to install the new gnome-shell, or after installing kbuntu. In any event, when I try to boot Ubuntu 10.04, I get the login screen where I enter my username/password. After doing so, I get the following error messages (in this order). I should note that add the login screen, I have the option boot gnome, kde, failsafe gnome, etc. I tried all the options with the same result:
"Cannot open consolekit session: unable to open session: failed to execute to program /lib/dbus-daemon-launch-helper:success"
"Cannot enter home directory. Using /"
"Could not duplicate ICEauthority file/.Iceauthority."

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

I have a LAMP installation for learning php and mysql. My online trainer pointed out that we always get a white screen when the php is wrong, when we should get error messages that say which line in the code is wrong etc.
I recently reinstalled mysql so it is the latest version from the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.
Is there a way to make error messages show up?

I've had a Centos 5.3 zimbra mailserver set up for about 3 months now.Every 7-10 days or so, the system will do a kernel panic and I've been putting off its resolution due to other matters.I'm now ready to look into it but I have two issues :
1) No logs.
So far, I've manually rebooted when a kernel panic occured and could look at the panic printout and write down relevant info. But since I wanted more info than I had written down, I went hunting in the logs for the kernel panic event (one happened earlier today) but, to my surprise, I noticed the system doesn't log the kernel panic at all. Kdump is currently disabled as I'd like to keep all available memory available to the system but I was under the impression it would log the kernel panic message regardless but would simply leave out more advanced diagnostic information. How would I make sure the kernel panic is logged so I can have more info about it ?
2) The actual panic. Here's a snippet of what's appearing when the kernel panics :
EIP c0467136 page_remove_rmap+0x66/0xc0 SS:ESP 0068:c3ca6ddc <0> Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal Exception
I've also seen f793bee4 instead of the highlighted part above but everything else is always the same from the times I've seen (as I haven't always had the chance to be around when a panic occured).I'm looking further into it at this point but early research seem to indicate this could be a memory issue. I'll run memtest next weekend to check that out (since I don't want to take the system offline for any length of time during office hours) but people here might have other theories based on what I've put up so far. The system has all of the latest patches and updates and is running only what I need as far as software goes (zimbra server + prerequisites, x + GNOME (not loaded on startup), firefox and vnc for windows RDP access). My system also uses a software RAID1 array (boot = md0 and / = md2 with swap files not being mirrored as there's no need to).
PS : In order to further troublehsoot by myself before posting here, I've tried to enable kdump to see if kdump is the culprit for the missing logs but I'm also having an issue with it. I'm getting a "No kdump initial ramdisk found" and "mkdumprd: failed to make kdump initrd" messages at startup. I'm thinking this might be because of my raid array ? I've found an old bug report regarding one of those error messages on centos 5.2 but it was supposedly fixed in the 30 version by RH and I'm using the latest one (56).

Just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5745G, straight away I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10, I stuck in the cd and rebooted the new laptop that currently only seemed to have Linpus Linux, I then got masses of error messages saying something such as cannot run var/ etc etc and then
:cannot touch 'var/lock/subsys/local': input/output error
and then...
EXT2-fs error (device sda1) : ext2_lookup: deleted inode referenced (lots of numbers here)
It does this for many, many lines then sites there for ages doing nothing and wont allow me to type any commands ( I dont know any command really apart from 'reboot') and then finally after 5 mins or so shows the command prompt [root@localhost /]# but I cant do anything from here.
I've done some searches and found this thread:
url
but startx and system-cofig-display dont work and just says bad commands.
Ive also tried changing the settings so it always reboots from dvd, same problem, made a USB ubuntu start up, forced booting from usb, same again.
