Ubuntu :: Overheating Error On Startup?
Dec 4, 2010
Ubuntu 10.10 maverick on a Lenovo s10e.
I keep getting a message on startup (although not every time) which tells me the critical temperature is reached (87 C) and the machine is shutting down (unfortunately it's not being written to the log). I then reboot after it has shut down and it's fine.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300D which has a normal, Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit and Vista 64-Bit dual boot. My problem is, on Ubuntu, the laptop overheats and crshes very fast, 5-15 minutes. I have the AMD GPU driver activated, and it is all normal, I havent done any tweaks apart from a GRUB tweak, that only lists 1 Linux Kernal at a time.

I have configured Kaffeine to work with my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 950Q USB device, and am able to get channels scanned, and can get sound, video from channels, etc. However, its use overheats my laptop to the degree it literally shuts down- turns off! Any suggestions? It took some effort to get this to work in Ubuntu 10.10; however, if it heats up the laptop to this degree what good is it?!

With windows I was able to leave my computer on my lap and go for hours on end its never overheated on me and it still doesn't with windows, but with ubuntu it will last around 30-1h then it will overheat or even faster if I do anything like play a game or watch flash. And its not a problem with the new flash release because last year when I had ubuntu 10.04 it did the same thing (im on 10.10)

I have noticed that the Acer Travelmate '10.04 netbook', is heating up while bringing it out of suspended mode,that's when it does'nt decide to turn off the whole machine instead. Should 'nt it be asleep?.. I would use hibernate but that surely does'nt come back on. I stopped trying so I used suspend instead. but the temp must be around 48 .I removed a usb mouse that fed off the power supply and still left a usb in ,but that shouldnt prevent it from goin to bed ,right?..Windoze doe'nt like it ,emm does't do it , Not notsleep ...

When I connect my flash drive into the USB port on my computer, it starts overheating and within 1 minute, its too hot to pull out with my bare fingers. But when I plugged it into USB port of my Pioneer CDJ 2000 (DJ player), it didnt overheat and it was able to read files (I did firmware update). Should I throw it in the trash and buy a new one? It's only 2 GB drive.

I've got a Dell M90 with an NVidia Quatro FX 3500 gpu. In Windows it would idle at around 45degrees. In Ubuntu 9.1 it idles at 65. Doing anything at all takes it up to 75-80 and playing a 3d game takes it to 90 withing a couple minutes.

I was hoping to install Fedora 15 x64 on my desktop on a seperate disk from Windows. I have tried about 15 times so far and keep getting errors. The same type of errors occur when trying Ubuntu 11.04 x64.
This is the spec of my PC:
Core i7 920 oc'ed to 4.00ghz (stable in Windows with temps under 60 degrees celcius at load)
Asus Rampage II Extreme
Sapphire Radeon 4890
6gb Ram
Install disk is an empty WD Caviar Black 1TB (Also, not sure if this is relevant, two soundcards - M-Audio Audiophile & Asus Xonar)
This is the error (I can't get it all written down because it reboots too quickly, so I've written down a selection):
SPU 4: Machine Check Exception: 4 Bank 5: be000000000800400
TSC 564..
And lower down the error: No human readable MCE decoding support on this processor type
I suspect this is due to overheating because when I boot back into windows the cpu temp has risen to 80+.
Is there going to be any way to get Linux on this machine without frying the processor?

BlizzPlanet reports that people are seeing their nvidia graphics cards overheat when running the Windows 196.75 driver and playing 3D games. I have to wonder whether I fell afoul of this issue. A week ago I installed the 195.36 nVidia proprietary Linux driver on my Karmic Koala system, after adding the PPD nvidia-vdpau repository to my sources.list. I restarted so the new driver would take effect... and was surprised to see the graphics chip temperature soar to over 130 degrees Celsius. It fried itself. When I opened up the case, I checked the card's fan, and it spun freely, and I'd not heard any noise of the sort that accompanies a dying fan. I'm sticking with 190.53 for now. Has anyone else seen overheating difficulties with the 195.36 driver?

Had the laptop for about a year, when in Windows it never happens, but seems to happen frequently in Xubuntu 11.04. I've looked almost everywhere for increasing the fan speeds, because it never kicks into high gear, just a steady pace for idle use. lm-sensors doesn't show fan speeds, just the temps of the CPU.
As far as this thread goes, I've already got the latest kernel.
Fan is clear of dust, and it runs at an average temperature until the GPU is needed code...

I just upgraded to Jessie and my laptop, a vostro 1710, is overheating.
Code: Select allalexis1@debian:~$ sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +62.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +61.0°C (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
[Code] ....
I tried to follow what is indicated here : [URL] ....
What I have done :
Code: Select all $ sudo apt-get build-dep i8kutils
$ apt-get source i8kutils
$ tar xvf i8kutils_1.41.tar.xz
$ cd i8kutils-1.41/
I am on a 32-bits system so after
Code: Select all $gcc -g -O2 -Wall -I. -o smm smm.c
then
Code: Select all $sudo ./smm 30a3
returns
Code: Select alleax=000030a3 ebx=00000000 ecx=00000000 edx=00000000 esi=00000000 edi=00000000
eax=00000000 ebx=00000000 ecx=00000000 edx=00000000 esi=00000000 edi=00000000 0
Finally when I type
Code: Select all i8kfan 2 2
I get
Code: Select all -1 2
i.e. my fans start and then suddenly stop !

My laptop is an Acer Travelmate 7530G, it runs an AMC Athlon X2 64 2.1Ghz CPU, 2GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD3470 Hybrid X2 512MB. In Ubuntu (all versions) the temperature sensor goes up to around 99C and apparently sometimes reaches up to 109C ! The laptop itself gets very hot (as one would imagine), and the fan is on highest constantly. But in windows this problem is not present.

Following a discussion on the Asus forum on overheating, [URL] , I find that my netbook is running three power managers simultaneously: gnome, xfce and jupiter. How do I disable (not uninstall) these one by one, so that I can identify the most efficient manager by elimination? Back story: my observation posted in the Asus forum was that Lucid runs several degrees hotter than XP on my 1005HA machine, which is a dual boot.

Is there any way to get openSUSE 11.2 to automatically shutdown or hibernate when the laptop is overheating? I often cannot tell when my computer is overheating as it sits on a table. When it over heats, the kernel panics and I have to hold the power button to force my computer to shut off.

I have a Lenovo W700 laptop, and have had SuSE 11.1 on it for over a year. Recently, I tried updating to 11.2 and then 11.3. Ever since I tried that, my laptop started shutting down because the graphics card (nVidia Quadro FX 2700m) overheats - when the temperature reaches over 120 degrees centigrade, the system auto-shuts down.
I tried doing a clean re-install of SuSE 11.1 but that didn't help.
I thought it might be a hardware problem, but I can boot the laptop in Windows and it runs fine there. The part of the laptop where the GPU is feels warm, but not burning hot, when running in Windows.
I tried installing nvclock to force the fan to stay on (some of the things I've read seem to indicate a problem with the fan control) but that says it doesn't recognize my card, and when I run it with "-f" it says the card doesn't have fan control.
At this point, I can either run Windows Vista on the laptop, or run Linux in text-mode only; I wasn't able to install a graphical system because it would overheat halfway through the installation.

using Xubuntu 9.10 on a Dell GX270, 500MB memory, Intel 82865G integrated graphics.On logging in, I get an Xsession error -- unless I hit Esc, as soon as the initial splash screen (the one with a bundle of mosquitos buzzing around each other) appears. This is iffy -- I have to time it right. The .xsession-errors file produced has the following in it:
Code:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.

I just downloaded Ubuntu installer for windows (wubi). After downloading and installing it as dualboot operating system. I went on configuring it. for my bad luck my laptop died due to low battery (I found it the cause, but may be some system error, well I don't think so) when the system was updating itself. Now I can boot to my old Windows 7 successfully, Ubuntu recover mode also. but when I try to boot with normal Ubuntu, it comes to welcome screen but never takes me to login page. I don't know what went wrong and how can I repair it. But I am really eager to sort it out and enjoy the Ubuntu.

Yesterday I've installed Debian 8.1.0 on my desktop pc. I'm using Nvidia GT 730. After booting, the GPU fan runs at very high speed and really gets overheated. I didn't install any drivers etc.
Is there a solution for this or do i have to switch to Intel/ATI to use Linux? I said Linux, because every distros i've installed makes Nvidia chipset overheated and the fan runs at max. speed.
I'm terrified about making the GPU burnt.

i recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my toshiba satellite p200-1k8 laptop; with ubuntu the fans were always running at full blast and the laptop would overheat and shut down even though i wasn't using the computer for anything intensive, e.g.just browsing videos. i installed opensuse thinking the problem might have been with ubuntu but in suse as well the fans seem to be running full blast right from start up and the laptop getting quite hot. i've now learnt this is a generic problem with toshiba satellite laptops and linux, something to do with acpi and possibly the ati graphics cards? my gpu is an ati mobility radeon 2600 if thats any help. in windows (which i was last using two days ago) the fans and heat from the laptop were nowhere near this noticeable and i didn't experience this overheating problem just browsing the web.
could anyone recommend any fixes to better the heat management of my laptop on linux (apart from cleaning the fan which i've already tried )?
