Jul 15, 2010I installed 10.04 and did the upgrades. After that I installed a few programs.Now when I try to install or uninstall something from synaptic it gives me this error at the end:

Mar 1, 2011Why is it that I kept getting error messages that basically were saying that could not connect to the Ubuntu servers to do download of updates to Ubuntu that is until I switched to the MAIN ubuntu server at which point it worked fine.I tried several of the Ubuntu servers other than the MAIN server and kept getting error messages. Is there some problem with those other servers ?

Nov 5, 2010Two days ago I downloaded and installed new updates after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. After the update I was informed I needed to restart. Once my laptop booted up again it stayed to a black screen and then filled up with error messages like something about trace call or call trace?
I had no way to get into my system but I did have some minor success starting in an old kernel. However after a while it would freeze like the graphics driver was going wrong.
Two attempt later of reinstalling 10.10 from disc after deleting the drive content and after updating it would go back to the same.
So I have now disabled updates as I haven't a clue on which one(s) is causing these problems.
I am on a HP Pavillion dv7 with nVidia graphics card and running 64amd Ubuntu.

Sep 11, 2010After the upgrade on this AMD Athlon Barton 2500+ system, root device not found.The Grub install had failed; the new grub.cfg file was non-existent. In the Grub folder there was only a env file.Succeeded in installing Grub2, but without the cfg file it didn't help any, of course.
Very disappointed that the new Grub install didn't succeed and that there is no 'repair' for such an event on the Live CD of 10.04.1.Had done a few upgrades, from 7.04 to 7.10 and to 8.04 without problems.Very surprised and shocked that an upgrade from one LTS to the following LTS does not work 'out of the box'

Apr 29, 2010I'm trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on a new Dell studio 1535. Since I have 4GB of RAM I went with the 64bit version. I can get to the menu where I select to check disk, install, try without changing etc... However when I tried to check the disc integrity I saw the Ubuntu logo for about ten minutes and then let it sit for another 20 minutes, and all I saw was a blank screen. I then tried making another CD and came up with the same results. I then tried to install and at first it was like before, but then i started getting different error messages the majority had the form: [ 771.744543] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 337015another looked like:[ 1244.029631] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0 sector 673592a few said something about SQUASHFS.I have tried three different CD's I looked at the hash and they matched up so the file is fine. I downloaded the 32bit version and I'm going to try that just to see if it works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates
Mar 24, 2011For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Fedora :: Install The 32 Bit Version And Apparently Succeeded?
Jul 13, 2010I have done some searching around and now know that the 64 bit version of Wine is useless. I tried to install the 32 bit version and apparently succeeded. The problem is that when I open Wine File the .wine-x86_64 folder reappears. I don't even know where the 32 bit folder is.

Programming :: Patch Command: Hunk #1 Succeeded At 25 With Fuzz 1
Oct 21, 2010I am beginning to start to work with compiling and I get some confusing output adding patches to sourcecode (xosview-1.8.3). (The patch is for suppressing warnings while running the make command : deprecated conversion from * char to ** char ) Xosview compiles without the patch. The patch itself contains 17 files to add mostly const char instead of char. It is one single file containing also files in one subdirectory.
While running `patch < PATCHFILE.patch I had to copy'n'paste the filenames of the subdirectory to the terminal to keep it going. To get it going without much manual input I split it up for the two directories. I got the original patch and both splitted patches succeeding but with confusing output like :
patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line Hunk #2 succeeded at 78 with fuzz 1.
or just
patching file nfsmeter.h patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line # I splitted the original patch to every 17 files and this kind of output I get now at almost every patchfile. I downloaded patch source from debian
and running `pfind` (Puppy-linux speciality .sh) for search text in files showed off patch.c

As you can see the patch is working but what would I have to add to the patch? I added more newlines , added all lines to close a "{" if the patched line was inside ( also added "}" ), adjusted the path at the diff -uraNd /PATH/ -line, even deleted the diff line.

Jun 7, 2011I try to connect to my server (whose IP is x.x.x.x below) from my laptop. I have no idea why openvpn client won't work this time. It works fine in win7 before. I re-installed openvpn but it doesn't work neither. Then I searched for this issue, find that it is possibly caused by disabled DHCP Client service. I checked, and found it was enabled. Still won't work after restarting dhcp client service.

Ubuntu :: Error Messages About Applets / Won't Appear After Startup
May 29, 2010Can someone please help me? I'm a noob and I've never had a problem like this before.Ever since I installed on this system every time I start up I get a bunch of error windows.I tried pressing the "Don't Delete" or "Reload" buttons as appropriate. Then the applets sometimes reappear and sometimes they don't. Please help a noob!

Jul 1, 2010I just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.

Nov 10, 2010Problem-cannot mount 2 other samba computers on my ubuntu 10.04 via 'sudo mountall'. Additionally I now get Firefox/Thunderbird error messages as listed below. Had no problems with ubuntu UNTIL I attempted install of VirtualBox running WinXP client in my Ubuntu host. VirtualBox seemed to install ok but upon startup of WinXP client all I got was a black screen. To close it I had to do "Power Off" which VBox manual says is like a hard power off and is to be avoided. So I guess it's like I crashed XP within Ubuntu.
Now - ubuntu boots ok except will not auto mount other samba connected computers. Manually running 'sudo mountall' in terminal gives --

Ubuntu :: Error Messages When Attempting To Boot 9.10
Dec 29, 2010I have Ubuntu 9.10. The batter drained several days ago, and now when I attempt to boot I simply get a string of indecipherable error messages which last for about 5 minutes, and the screen then goes completely black. I am not able to even get to the login screen. Windows 7 Starter boots fine, so it's definitely a software issue. Any solutions short of completely reinstalling? I really don't want to lose all of my data.

May 1, 2011I just installed Natty on my laptop. It has SSD drive, so to align the file system to the physical block size properly I created the partitions manually. After the installation it only boots to the GRUB recovery console, so I tried re-installing GRUB from Live CD by:

It now boots to the system but always shows the following error messages instead of the GRUB menu on every boot:

I suspect that I've missed out something during the installation, since SSD drives seem to need some more attention.

Jun 20, 2011I'm not sure when this occurred, but it happened either when I was trying to install the new gnome-shell, or after installing kbuntu. In any event, when I try to boot Ubuntu 10.04, I get the login screen where I enter my username/password. After doing so, I get the following error messages (in this order). I should note that add the login screen, I have the option boot gnome, kde, failsafe gnome, etc. I tried all the options with the same result:
"Cannot open consolekit session: unable to open session: failed to execute to program /lib/dbus-daemon-launch-helper:success"
"Cannot enter home directory. Using /"
"Could not duplicate ICEauthority file/.Iceauthority."
Ubuntu :: 'grub Loading' And No Other Error Messages
Mar 19, 2010I have a CLEVO laptop and it currently has Windows 7 installed. I now want to create a separate partition to install Ubunutu 9.10 64bit. I attempted to install this and the install part worked fine but as soon as I rebooted all I seem to be getting after the BIOS is 'grub loading'. I get no other error messages and am stumped on what the problem is. It also meant I couldnt load windows either but I fixed this by loading the windows cd, running repair and then fixing the MBR which another thread mentioned. Once this was done windows loading up ok. I have checked nearly every setting and it has made no difference. I tried reinstalling 9.10 but came up with the same problem. I am not sure what I did in Windows may have caused it. I have a 320gb drive and I shrunk it using disk management as I know the ubuntu will see this free space and install the OS onto it. Should I have left this and let 9.10 create some space automatically during install?

Feb 9, 2011I have a LAMP installation for learning php and mysql. My online trainer pointed out that we always get a white screen when the php is wrong, when we should get error messages that say which line in the code is wrong etc.
I recently reinstalled mysql so it is the latest version from the repositories for Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS.
Is there a way to make error messages show up?
