I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 on a Mac Pro using VMWare. It prompted me that updates are due so I selected to update. Now it's at the Update Manager showing 252 updates and all boxes such as close, check, and install updates, are all greyed out and the cursor is showing the circle that it's working on something. I had this happen a few days ago so I rebooted. This is the 2nd time trying this and I'm stuck at the same prompt.
I have even manually gone into the update manager and selected even to check for updates and it freezes up. I have tried to search for a specific file and the same thing happens. I have used previous versions of Ubuntu and never had this problem. I even went as far as doing a fresh install and had the same problem.

I just installed Banshee 1.7, now I get this error when I check for updates. It doesn't look like it's affiliated with Banshee but I can't figure out what it's for.

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I cant get System/Administration/Network to activate my wireless card - when I click on the card, the activate/deactivate buttons are greyed out. Network manager sees the connection when I click on 'edit connections'. Which files do I need to edit to sort this out, or do I need to print here to help find a solution?

I've just switched from xub to lub, and I must say it's a lot lot faster. There's just one really annoying problem (I have no idea if this is in any way related to LXDE or if it's just due to 10.04): Network Manager only starts about a minute after the rest of the desktop. So my system boots up, I log in, see the applet, but it is greyed out (it tells me "Network Manager is disabled" or something similar). After a minute (approx), it suddenly comes to life and connects me. Now, I think this only happens when I have:
A) set the wireless connection to "all users"
B) given an empty password for the keyring
But when I cancel either of the two above, it doesn't stop it from happening. I've tried updating etc.. to no avail. I've also tried wicd, but for some reason installing wicd from synaptic doesn't remove Network Manager? Anyway, has anyone seen behaviour like this? Any suggestions for first steps to take to see where it's blocking?

I have a system set up with Fedora 9 - the Fed10 installer choked on an older Intel video chip. I've decided to try updating to 10 in anticipation of further upgrading to 11. Reading this forum and elsewhere convinced me to try preupgrade. I started it and saw Fed10 as an available upgrade path, selected it. At that point, the system appeared to freeze -- the progress bar got about 10% along and everything sat for 10-15minutes. I exited out of preupgrade and tried the rpm path.
That didn't fly either -- I was told that there were no packages marked for upgrade. I read more about preupgrade, including the fact that it might give the appearance of having locked up although it was still working. So I went back to preupgrade. This time, Fed10 didn't show in the selection box. It was, in fact, empty except when I checked the box for beta/unstable and could see Rawhide.
How do I get back to where I was with preupgrade so that I can finish what I started? Alternatively, how can I do a 9 to 10 upgrade from this point (preupgrade grayed out and rpm reporting no packages)? I expect to further upgrade to 11 in a couple of months, so the step to 10 is necessary. I do not have a separate /home partition and I have some very expensive (and difficult to set up) software that insists on sitting in /usr/local, so a full install, though doable, isn't something I want to undertake -- I'd much prefer to do to upgrades from 9.

I am doing network config of my laptop. I'm new to Fedora, so I'm not sure how it goes ...
I have an Ethernet device (eth0) and a wireless device, wlan0
Status in system->administration->network:
Tab devices:
eth0 : active
wlan0: inactive
Tab Hardware:
eth0: system
wlan0: configured (description: b43)
Double clicking on the wlan0 line gets you to Network Adapters Configuration, where adapter b43 grayed out) is associated with device wlan0. So far, so good (I did all the fwcutter stuff, so I assume this is the result). When I installed the system (from installcd, then update, then install broadcom-wl, ...) I configured it to be started up with network manager, automatically on startup. I managed to get it working exactly once in that session.
Problem is, it doesn't start up and the wireless is not even visible when you click the network manager icon. For that matter, eth0 does not start automatically either, but at least there is a button to start it in network manager. Coming back to the tab devices, clicking on wlan0 allows you to click on the activate button ... but there it says: Cannot activate network device wlan0! b43 device wlan0 does not seem to be present.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
I have installed the latest ffmpeg using this tutorial : HOWTO: Install and use the latest FFmpeg and x264.
What ever I do I always get the same error when trying to use ffmpeg with the new presets setting. I've searched forums and google the whole last day and now I'm pretty lost.
Here is the command I use (I've stripped it down to it's simplest form.):
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i ~/Desktop/input.mkv -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_slow ~/Desktop/output.mp4
and this is the error:
[Code]....
I've tried changing the bitrate, adding -pass 1, bitrate tolerance, quality based etc... I've tried at least 60 different things... reinstall ffmpeg countless times using different tutorials. It's always the same error.

I noticed that a lot of software updates were ready today so I installed all of them without thinking to make a note of what they were, so I don't know if ffmpeg or one of its dependencies was amongst them. The very next time I ran ffmpeg, it gave me an error I haven't seen before. After downloading a file from BBC's iPlayer site using get-iplayer, I ran a script to convert it to a format suitable for my Samsung YP-Q2 personal media player. I copied the command out of that script and pasted it onto the command line so that I could capture the console output of that encoding session, shown below:
Code:
[garry tv]$ ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec mpeg4 -b 1024k -r 15 -s qvga outputfile.avi

ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: ffmpeg: undefined symbol: avcodec_channel_layout_num_channels
[garry tv]$
This error, "undefined symbol" is what makes me think that either ffmpeg or one of its dependencies has been updated or the error would have occurred before now. I've been using the script with the command in the above form for some weeks now with no problems, almost always converting an MP4 (but sometimes a .mov) into an AVI. Thinking that it might be the version of ffmpeg in the standard repos, I followed the advice of this thread and removed the standard ffmpeg and installed the one from Medibuntu. (Removing the standard one took WinFF and DVDRip with it, but I reinstalled those afterwards, and I'm sure they don't come into the equation otherwise.) I re-ran the command and the error was exactly as before. Is ffmpeg recently borked or am I missing something obvious? Or something obscure, for that matter?

I am running a server which is hosting a site where members can upload videoclips. I noticed that upon upload a thumbnail is not created for the videoclip. I found out that ffmpeg needed to be properly installed and in my case ffmpeg-php as the site runs on php. So far so good. I followed the instructions found somewhere to install ffmpeg-php but stall at the command: dot slash configure && make The error I get is:
checking for egrep... grep -E
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... slash slash bin slash sed
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
I presume it's because gcc is missing. how I can start tackling the problem and ultimately get gcc running so I can install the ffmpeg? I am really sorry I was hoping to elaborate a bit more but I get an error: You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more. so I guess I need to wait and describe it differently.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

I can't install Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bits) because the Forward button is grayed out in the "Who are you?" box.
I tried installing with various options (with and w/o additional software and with and w/o online updating, manual and automatic partitioning, going back and forth, trying different ways to fill out the fields in the stuck "Who are you?" page etc.)
The most cynical is that at the bottom it says: "Ready when you are..." - which obviously isn't true - it should say: "I am utterly stuck...".
Machine is a dual 275 Opteron with 16 GB registered RAM on an Iwill DK88 mobo. 3 SATA disks and 2 IDE disks. Latest BIOS.

Just wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.
I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.
And I know to never do a partial upgrade.
Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.
I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -
sudo apt-get-upgrade currently gives this output:
Code:
The following packages have been kept back:
ffmpeg libavdevice52 libpostproc51 libswscale0
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded
[Code]....
