I had just downloaded and installed Ubuntu. I had to manually install the Software Center. So I did that and installed a bunch of things including OpenJDK and its browser plugins. OpenJDK caused trouble in a game I play, so I installed Sun instead. However, that's the old version. I followed the above instructions, removed the old verisons and attempted to install the plugins. But unless I use the Software Center, it doesn't work. I'm cutting and pasting exactly and nothing shows up in my aboutlugin screen.

I'm using Ubuntu jaunty and was using old version of pidgin until today. Today I had decided to install newer version of Pidgin 2.7 and uninstalled my old version from system. Because it had so many problem like not login to yahoo account.
I went to Pidgin website and downloaded Debian package for ubuntu. But got an error while installing. Finally I decided to install it from source package and downloaded it to install. While I try to make configure file by typing
Code:
./configure
command, it gave me following error:
Code:
checking for update_panels in -lpanel... no
[Code]...
So I can not install Pidgin now. If I have to install it anyway I have to disable video and voice service for Pidgin. But I would like to use Pidgin with video and voice.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a Gateway md7818u.When trying to install Pidgin today, I found that I could not do so in the software center due to to a "Software Dependencies Cannot Be Resolved" error. So I went to Synaptic and attempted there. One package after another kept saying "dependent on (insert package name here) but will not be installed" so I went to manually install these packages, with the same results, leading me to "libdirac-encoder0" which would install but conflicted with many of my installed programs it said that all had to be removed to install this package, which will allow me to install all of these other packages, which will allow me to install Pidgin.

OpenSUSE 11.4, 64 bits, with
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4
and
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4
repositories enabled. Since some days, if I go to YaST2 †’ Package †’ "Update packages if a new version is available" (I'm translating from Spanish) I get a warning that plasma-addons-4.6.5-9.3.x86_64 needs akonadi-runtime < 1.5.40, but that that requirement cannot be match because there are eliminated providers: akonadi-runtime-1.5.3-91.1.x86_64
and non instalable providers: akonadi-runtime-1.5.0-3.3.1.x86_64[openSUSE-11.4-11.4-0]
As "solution" it offers me to not install akonadi-runtime-1.6.0.93.1.x86_64 and libakonadiprotocolinternals1-1.6.0.93.1.x86_64 (which I selected) or to uninstall plasma-addons and kadressbook, which I do not think it is a good idea...

I have inherited our Linux packaging and as the number of versions increase, the number of conflicts is starting to get a bit unmanageable. I believe the easiest way would have been to keep the package names the same and just change the release in the spec file but unfortunately I am past that as a lot of these packages are rolled out to our estate. (I am told there were reasons for not keeping the package name the same and incrementing the version/release)
Is it possible to wildcard conflicts so I don't need to keep adding as new versions are created. For example, instead of using all the conflicts below, have something along the lines of AAtest45* <= 1.4 & BBtest45* <= 1.4 Meaning that all I would need to do was change this to 1.5 at the next release (the packages below version matched the release in the spec file)

I was having trouble getting my 8.10 box to restart... it appeared hung on a line talking about alsa (I don't recall what it said). I started back up and the volume icon indicated it was muted. I unmuted and, lo and behold, I have no sound. So, I tried to follow the alsa upgrade instructions at [URL].
When I tried to run the second script:
Code:
sudo sh ./alsa_2.sh
I got this:
cp: target `/lib/modules/2.6.2*/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko' is not a directory
cp: cannot stat `/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver*/modules/*': No such file or directory
cp: omitting directory `/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/sound/'
cp: omitting directory `/lib/modules/2.6.27-14-generic/kernel/sound/'
cp: omitting directory `/lib/modules/2.6.27-15-generic/kernel/sound/'
And now my volume indicates it's muted again, and if I try to adjust it I get this error:
The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.

I'd love to know how to check the original configuration of a self-installed package? For example, I would like to install the package XXXXX. I did:
./configure
make
make install
After the installation, I would like to know what the configuration I used for XXXXX's installation. Maybe some dependencies (for example, A,B,C...) were not found so that XXXXX was installed without depending on A,B,C.... However, now, I would like XXXXX depend on A,B,C... How to check whether the current installed XXXXX's original configuration?

I'm trying to use Debian Stable with some newer upstream packages. I've got the upstream Firefox tarball unbacked in /home/firefox/. The problem is that it can't find any plugins, flash or anything else. It's the 64 bit binary but still needed some 32 bit libraries to run. Does it need 32 bit plugins?
Iceweasel is uninstalled and and I deleted it's ./mozilla/ directory. I tried creating a /home/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and symlinking plugins into that and pretty much any other conceivable path where it could be looking for them.
I run upstream firefox from /home/ in the past and had no problems.

I am trying to make the sound quality better on my Ubuntu.
I have read some tips in this topic: [url]. This made to go to this topic: [url]
It says there this: (If you are lazy to click )
Re: NEED better audio quality
Quote:
I can tell you flat out that foobar with the secret rabbit plugin, even without any internal or external equalizer completely tears up linux sound.
No, it doesn't.
In Linux you can easily choose Secret Rabbit in SRC_SINC_BEST_QUALITY mode as your system-wide sample rate converter by adding a single line to either /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc (requires libasound2-plugins and libsamplerate0 to be installed):
Code:
Now show me how to do that in Windows.
I have both of those packages installed, but for some reason the file asound.conf and .asoundrc are not there so I cannot add the line.

I'm trying to clone 2 raid sets using dd.( have done this successfully many times in the past)
this time however running into issues.
dd stops with a 'input/output error'
dmesg shows:
A little above this i find
Background: this is a proliant sevrer & has got XFS filesystem on it. Last weeek it showed some XFS errors, tried to do a repair but didnt work.So thought would clone the raid set from a good 'source' server. ( we need this for a test purpose )
Before cloning I deleted raid & created again. everything looked OK, all disks showed as GOOD, but then the dd copy failed with above msg. I'm sure the source raid set is in good condition. Any thoughts on what could be wrong here & how I may be able to recover it?
